Four-time IndyCar champion Alex Palou on Friday was ordered to pay McLaren more than £9m in the breach of contract suit the team filed when the Spaniard backed out of two different deals with the racing team.

The Friday ruling from London's High Court came after a five-week trial last year. McLaren initially sought almost $30m (£22m) in damages, but that number was reduced to $20.7m (£15.3m) as the racing juggernaut sought to reclaim money allegedly lost in sponsorship, driver salaries and performance earnings.

McLaren was originally seeking nearly $20 million in lost monies against Palou, who, in 2023, breached his contract having agreed to join McLaren's IndyCar team.

Palou explained during his cross-examination in October's trial that he backed out of the contract after becoming aware that he would not graduate to an F1 race seat for the 2024 season, something he believed he had been promised during talks with CEO Zak Brown.

If you somehow missed it yesterday, the court case between McLaren Racing and reigning IndyCar Series champion and Indianapolis 500 winner Álex Palou has concluded, with McLaren being awarded just over $12 million USD in damages sought for breach of contract when Palou signed with the Formula 1 constructor and IndyCar Series competitor in 2022.

McLaren had originally sought over $30 million in damages for breach of contract pertaining to both the Formula 1 and IndyCar side of the agreement. But while the $20 million portion related to Formula 1 was dismissed on Friday, the $12 million related to IndyCar – which would have seen Palou leave Chip Ganassi Racing for Arrow McLaren in 2024 – was upheld.
