ASX eyes lower open as investors await RBA speeches

The Australian sharemarket is set to dip on Monday as investors prepare for fresh evidence that the economy is cooling down and a flurry of central bank speeches for clues on where interest rates are heading next.

Futures for the S&P/ASX 200 Index suggest a softer start to the week, pointing down 13 points, or 0.1 per cent, taking a breather from the biggest rally in nearly two months on Friday. The benchmark ended the month with a modest 0.7 per cent gain, but it is still lagging international peers.

The US-Iran rollercoaster rolls on, with every day a new revelation and a new reality. As the week started, investors saw a potential peace deal quickly escalate to war and attacks by the United States by lunchtime, only for the following day to see it back to promises of a deal by President Trump, followed by yet more war.

By Thursday, investors didn’t know which way was up, with the ASX opening relatively flat before conceding a whopping 1.5 per cent by midday after Iran fired warning shots at tankers leaving the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump denied anything was awry Friday, stating US and Iranian negotiators had reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire in the 3-month-old war by 60 days – which Iran quickly refuted before firing on a US base in Kuwait (intercepted).

Microsoft Stock Is an AI Bargain That Investors Are Missing

Despite dominating the cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) space, Microsoft (MSFT) stock has gone nowhere.

Over the past year, shares have fallen roughly 9.6%, lagging rivals such as Alphabet (GOOG) (GOOGL), whose stock has surged on AI enthusiasm, and Amazon (AMZN) , which has gained 28%.

How Microsoft Stock Can Climb To $600

Microsoft (MSFT) shares are currently priced around $410 each, boasting a market capitalization of $3.0 trillion and a trailing price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio estimated at approximately 24.3. This valuation is considerably conservative when compared to its three-year average ratio of 33 and its historical peak of 48, reached in late 2017. Although the existing market price indicates a downside relative to historical standards, the ascent to a $600 share price is fueled by genuine earnings growth instead of a speculative return to higher valuation multiples.

The key driver for this anticipated growth is revenue compounding, underpinned by substantial visibility into enterprise demand. Microsoft reported a growth rate of 17.9% over the previous twelve months, surpassing its three-year compound annual growth rate of 15.3%. (Refer to Microsoft’s financials). This growth pattern is supported by the company’s shift toward consumption-based cloud services and its strong remaining performance obligations, creating a highly visible groundwork for long-term growth. While Microsoft captures a significant portion of enterprise expenditures, the broader sector transformation also affects its competitors. Gold And Silver Rally As U.S.-Iran Nuclear Deal Remains Out Of Reach

Gold and silver rose Friday in the latest sign of recovery from a late January crash, reaching their highest points of February as nuclear talks between the U.S. and Iran lag with no agreement yet in sight.

Gold futures edged up 1.3% just above the $5,260 mark while silver spiked 7.6% past the $94.25 mark Friday shortly after 1 p.m. EST.

Spot prices followed suit, with gold up just over 1%, nearing an all-time high recorded before it slumped in January, and silver up 7.2%.

Silver is still well away from the all-time high it recorded last month, when it reached over $120.

The metal rally continued a day after U.S.-Iran nuclear talks did not result in a deal, though the two sides agreed to extend negotiations as President Donald Trump mulls military strikes against Iran.

One in three Aussie investors may quit, renters squeezed | PIPA

One in three property investors say they could quit the market if the capital gains tax discount is cut, as a rate rise bites into borrowing power and rental supply fears grow.

One in three property investors are preparing to quit the market as a radical federal tax grab threatens to bridge the rental crisis.

It comes as fresh interest rate pain wipes up to $23,000 from the average family’s borrowing power.New research from the Property Investment Professionals of Australia shows investor nerves are already influencing behaviour, even before any policy is locked in, with warnings that further sell-offs would deepen Australia’s rental crisis.

Back in late 2024, as the federal election campaign was at its height, Treasurer Jim Chalmers ordered Treasury to run the numbers on the impact of scaling back some of the lucrative concessions to capital gains tax.

Somehow, this was leaked, paving the way for the treasurer to dismiss that anything was afoot.

Now, it's on again. This time, following another well-sourced leak, it could form the centrepiece of the next federal budget in May.

Once again, the idea, while not being absolutely ruled out, has been downplayed.

Nvidia’s rise seemed unstoppable, but cracks may be appearing in the strategy that built its $4.5 trillion empire

Shawn Tully is a senior editor-at-large at Fortune, covering the biggest trends in business, aviation, politics, and leadership.

In late October, Nvidia cofounder and CEO Jensen Huang took the stage at the company’s annual GTC conference to make a typically sweeping declaration. Nvidia, he pronounced, sits “at the epicenter of the largest industrial revolution in human history,” eclipsing the advent of the steam engine and electricity. He went on to unveil a stunning array of partnerships: Nvidia plans to build 100,000 driverless cars alongside Uber and join Palantir to supply software and chips to accelerate the transfer of products from warehouses to doorsteps; it has also hatched a blueprint showing “hyperscalers” how to build “AI factories,” giga-scale data centers that only operate at their most potent and efficient deploying, guess what, Nvidia systems.

Nvidia is no longer the most popular AI trade. Can it regain its crown?
