Fan Expo announced Mel Gibson as a Toronto guest, and the backlash was immediate

Fan Expo Canada 2026 is still a few months away, and the celebrity guest list is already making headlines…just not for the reasons organizers might have hoped for. On Thursday, the convention announced on X that Mel Gibson will appear at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre on Saturday, Aug 29, hyping up the Oscar winner around the roles that made him a household name.

“He’s led revolutions, ruled the wasteland, and set the bar for epic storytelling. Mel Gibson’s roles in Lethal Weapon, Braveheart, & Mad Max are more than iconic—they’re legendary. Meet this cinematic hero when he comes to Toronto this August,” the X post stated.

'Braveheart' Is Based On A True Story — But The Real William Wallace Was Nothing Like Mel Gibson's Character

The 1995 film Braveheart stars Mel Gibson as William Wallace, a Scottish warrior who fights for his country’s independence before facing a grisly death at the hands of English executioners. The movie is certainly based on actual historical events, but is Braveheart a true story?

The answer is complicated. William Wallace was a real person who fought for Scotland, and he was executed for high treason in 1305. And the conflict portrayed in the film, the First Scottish War of Independence, did rage for more than 30 years in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.

However, Mel Gibson and his fellow producers took great liberties with Wallace’s story. Indeed, Braveheart has been called one of Hollywood’s most historically inaccurate movies.
