Israeli minister calls for killing ’30 to 40′ Palestinians in Gaza nightly

Far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir sits on Israel’s security cabinet, which helps shape war and policy.

Israel’s far-right national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, says Israeli forces should “kill 30 or 40” people in Gaza every night and go beyond “those who pose a danger … at that particular moment”.

Ben-Gvir made the comments to Rom Braslavski – a former Israeli captive held in Gaza as Israel waged a genocidal war on the territory after the Hamas-led attacks in October 2023 – in a podcast episode that surfaced on Sunday and was shared widely across Palestinian media.

“There are people there who are not worthy of life. They shouldn’t live. They’re not even people,” Ben-Gvir added while calling for the targeted killings of Palestinians in Gaza.

JERUSALEM (AP) — An extremist Israeli lawmaker in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition publicly advocated for killing “30 to 40” people in Gaza each night, comments that surfaced Sunday and were quickly shared by Palestinian media.

Minister of National Security Itamar Ben-Gvir made the statement while speaking to a former Gaza-held hostage, Rom Braslavski, on Braslavski’s podcast. The two were discussing Israel’s recovery from the Hamas attack of Oct. 7, 2023, when Ben-Gvir criticized Israel’s recent drawdown of strikes in Gaza.

Israeli settlers attack journalists, including CNN, on the anniversary of deadly West Bank beating

Four settlers were arrested after an attack on CNN and other journalists in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, according to Israeli Police.

The journalists were near the village of Sinjil north of Ramallah to cover the one-year anniversary of the killing of Saif Musallet, a Palestinian-American who was beaten to death by Jewish settlers, last July.

Within minutes of arriving at the location where Musallet was killed, Israeli settlers descended on the area. As the CNN team and other journalists tried to leave, a group of four settlers blocked the road with their car and tried to keep the vehicles from moving forward.

Thousands killed in US-Israeli war on Iran – but experts say true total may never be known

Thousands of people have been killed across the Middle East since the US-Israeli war with Iran began in February, official figures show, with a deal now agreed to end the war.

More than 7,300 people have been killed in Iran and Lebanon since 28 February, according to official casualty reports from those countries. Among them are hundreds of children and dozens of healthcare workers. Scores more people have been killed across the wider region.

However, some analysts say the figures are almost certainly an undercount and experts told BBC Verify that internet, media and government restrictions – coupled with unreliable figures due to the presence of armed groups in some areas – have hampered reporting.

The findings of this report indicate that civilians have borne the greatest burden of the 2026 U.S.–Israel–Iran war. Women and children have been particularly affected by death, injury, displacement, and the disruption of essential services. In Iran, the conflict has also deepened existing patterns of repression and insecurity, particularly in the context of the Women, Life, Freedom movement, further restricting civic space and increasing everyday risks for many communities.

It is important to note that the situation remains fragile. Although diplomatic efforts have raised hopes for de-escalation, including discussions surrounding a ceasefire and a possible peace agreement, reports of military activity have continued, and a durable end to hostilities has yet to be secured.

Israeli troops capture strategic Beaufort Castle as they push deeper into Lebanon

Experts say capture is largely symbolic, but it complicates efforts to extend ceasefire between US and Iran

Israeli troops have captured a clifftop castle as they made their deepest incursion into Lebanon in more than 26 years, further shattering a nominal US-brokered ceasefire and complicating efforts to extend the separate truce between the Washington and Tehran.

After days of intense fighting and airstrikes in nearby villages, the Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, said the military had captured Beaufort Castle, also known as Qalaat al-Shaqif, which it had used as a base during its previous occupation of southern Lebanon between 1982 and 2000.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) already controlled territory up to the Litani River in its campaign against Hezbollah, but troops are now pushing towards the Zahrani River, about six miles north.

Israel seizes castle in Lebanon as it expands ground offensive

The Israeli military has captured the strategic site of Beaufort Castle in southern Lebanon, in what Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described as a "decisive shift" in its offensive against Hezbollah.

It comes as ground troops move ever deeper into Lebanese territory beyond their original demarcation line of the Litani river.

Meanwhile the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) increased the zone in southern Lebanon that it has warned residents to evacuate from.

Lebanon's prime minister has accused Israel of carrying out "collective punishment".

Perched over the Litani valley, Beaufort Castle has been key to controlling the region around it since the Crusaders built it some 900 years ago. The Israeli army captured it 44 years ago in what's known in Israel as the First Lebanon War.

Israeli Defence Forces volunteer to face court over alleged western Sydney assault

Jihad El Cheikh was sitting with his wife sipping his coffee at the food court in Stocklands Merrylands when he was allegedly slapped in the back of the head by an Israeli Defence Force volunteer.

El Cheikh had spotted a man in a pro-Israel shirt in the food court and, after trading some words on the conflict in Palestine, was allegedly slapped and shoved before a crowd intervened.

Since then, El Cheikh, who lives in Merrylands, says he and his family no longer feel safe as Arab-Australians, as Muslims and as supporters of Palestine.

“This kind of happened in our backyard, and we don’t feel safe. We feel that something like this could happen at any time.”
