Leading AI expert delays timeline for its possible destruction of humanity | AI (artificial intelligence)

Former OpenAI employee Daniel Kokotajlo says progress to AGI is ‘somewhat slower’ than first predicted

A leading artificial intelligence expert has rolled back his timeline for AI doom, saying it will take longer than he initially predicted for AI systems to be able to code autonomously and thus speed their own development toward superintelligence.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former employee of OpenAI, sparked an energetic debate in April by releasing AI 2027, a scenario that envisions unchecked AI development leading to the creation of a superintelligence, which – after outfoxing world leaders – destroys humanity.

The scenario rapidly won admirers and detractors. The US vice-president, JD Vance, appeared to reference AI 2027 in an interview last May when discussing the US’s artificial intelligence arms race with China. Gary Marcus, an emeritus professor of neuroscience at New York University, called the piece a “work of fiction” and various of its conclusions “pure science fiction mumbo jumbo”.

The Dangers of AI and Extreme Wealth Inequality

Rarely in politics do we see genuinely new big ideas; instead, we see old ideas repackaged and communicated through new media. However, new technology often has a dramatic impact. The most obvious examples: agriculture, the printing press, and the Industrial Revolution, each in its own way, rendered systems and old ideas obsolete.

So, it is with entrepreneur Oliver Libby’s new centrist treatise, Strong Floor No Ceiling: Building a New Foundation for the American Dream. Libby’s book (and its titular slogan) is the latest center-left argument making the same case: that policymakers need not curb extreme wealth so long as there is an adequate safety net to catch those who fall. This is a familiar neoliberal approach to tax and regulatory policy. At best, its adherents believe that some froth at the top of the economic chain is a small price to pay for the supposed economic dynamism that creates widespread growth in capitalist systems. Viewed cynically, it is a convenient politics for those solicitous of a particular cadre of big donors not explicitly aligned with the far right.

‘SNL’ Has Its ‘Black Mirror’ Moment

A memorable sketch tackled what happens when embracing AI ends up disappointing Grandma.

Last night’s Saturday Night Live addressed the growing frustration with a technology that’s seemingly found its way into every American industry, even dishwashers. One of the first sketches of the night had Ashley Padilla as an elderly woman whose grandchildren went to visit her in a retirement center. As a surprise, her grandson (Marcello Hernández) had downloaded a program that used artificial intelligence to animate old photography, and had uploaded some of her treasured childhood photos. (This is a real service, and one that already served as the premise for an episode of Black Mirror.)

Glen Powell brings ‘Mitch the UPS guy’ onto ‘SNL’ stage after waiting 4 years to host

It was around the time of the Covid-19 pandemic that actor Glen Powell got the call that he would host “Saturday Night Live.”

He and his family were celebrating the news on a porch when a UPS driver delivering a package happened upon them and asked what was going on. Powell told the driver to tune in to the “SNL” Christmas episode because he’d be hosting.

They celebrated that moment roughly four years ago with a selfie, Powell said, displaying the image during his long-awaited “SNL” monologue Saturday.

Powell’s hosting duties were contingent on the release of “Top Gun: Maverick,” in which he plays Lt. Jake “Hangman” Seresin, but the film was delayed by the pandemic.
