Liza Minnelli takes jab at Lady Gaga over 2022 Oscars moment

The Will Smith slap wasn't the only bit of drama to arise out of the 2022 Oscars.

In her upcoming memoir "Kids, Wait Till You Hear This," Liza Minnelli, 79, describes being unhappy that she was allegedly forced to sit in a wheelchair when she presented best picture at the 2022 Academy Awards with Lady Gaga. Minnelli says she was expecting to sit in a director's chair, but this changed at the last minute.

USA TODAY has reached out to Gaga and the Academy for comment.

"I was inexplicably ordered − not even asked − to sit in a wheelchair or not appear at all," the "Cabaret" star claims in the book, according to an excerpt published by People magazine on Feb. 20.

Liza Minnelli Claims Oscars Forced Her to Use Wheelchair With Lady Gaga

Liza Minnelli lashes out at the Oscars in her new memoir, “Kids, Wait Till You Hear This!” The “Cabaret” icon presented the Academy Award for best picture alongside Lady Gaga at the 2022 Oscars, but Minnelli appeared somewhat disoriented on stage and stumbled over her words. Gaga notably comforted Minnelli in the moment by telling her, “I got you.”

Minnelli was in a wheelchair at the time, which she alleges in her book was mandated by the Academy. She had expected to be seated in a director’s chair where she could more easily see the teleprompter but plans changed at the last minute. The Academy reportedly pivoted to a wheelchair to prioritize Minnelli’s safety.

Idiot award shows need to stop embarrassing Hollywood legends

With the Oscars less than a month away, and the broadcast taking shape behind the scenes, here is the No. 1 thing I would like the producers not to do on March 15.

Please don’t put an aging Hollywood legend in an uncomfortable and humiliating situation in front of millions of people around the world and make us all feel miserable.

That would seem like a simple enough ask: Let a star who’s beloved by generations of audiences look good and feel confident. Avoid them becoming the target of social media mockery or pity. Have a heart. Easy.

Au contraire! Award shows, with the competency of a toddler piloting a 737, often screw it up in cataclysmic fashion.

Gu Ailing says it is "sweet" that JD Vance thinks she should be competing for the United States after the American vice-president called her out for representing China.

Gu, who also goes by the anglicised Eileen Gu, was born in San Francisco and educated at Stanford University.

"I certainly think that somebody who grew up in the United States of America, who benefited from our education system, from the freedoms and liberties that make this country a great place, I would hope that they want to compete with the United States of America," Vance said this week when asked about Gu during a Fox News interview.

Livigno: Chinese megastar Eileen Gu says she feels like a political target of the American right wing because they “hate China” – and not necessarily because they wish she was competing for the US at the Winter Olympics.

Gu’s contentious decision to represent China, despite being born and raised in California, has become a huge conservative talking point following her success at Milano Cortina 2026, where she is on track to podium in all three of her events for the second Games in a row.
