By Erik Bethel – The waters around Japan are writing the future of the Indo-Pacific, and China doesn’t like what they’re saying.

For over a decade, Beijing perfected a simple formula: deploy coast guard armadas, normalize military presence in contested waters, and wait for neighbors to accept the new reality. The strategy conquered the South China Sea, where China now operates from artificial islands that didn’t exist fifteen years ago.

Australia's multi-billion-dollar deal with Japan for its future warships could set a template that will help Tokyo rapidly expand defence exports across Asia.

Last weekend, it was announced that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is to supply the Royal Australian Navy with three upgraded Mogami-class frigates.

Days after the announcement, Japan unveiled its biggest overhaul of defence export rules in decades.

Australia's multi-billion-dollar deal with Japan for its future warships could set a template that will help Tokyo rapidly expand defence exports across Asia as Tokyo mulls an overhaul of its post-war pacifist constitution.

Massive frigate buy from Japan jolts Australian warship program

MANILA, Philippines — Australia has moved to reverse a decline in the number of warships, as its surface combatant fleet stands to fall to its smallest size since World War II.

Under Project Sea 3000, Australia and Japan inked a deal to buy three upgraded Mogami-class frigates for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN). The contract was signed by the two countries’ defense ministers aboard JS Kumano in Melbourne earlier this month.

This represents Japan’s largest-ever defense export, a major boost to its shipbuilding industry, and it advances greater strategic alignment between the two countries.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) will construct three 4,800-ton frigates in Japan, with the first to be delivered by December 2029.

Japan’s hawkish PM could drag Australia into conflict with China

Ahead of the Japanese prime minister’s visit, has Canberra fully thought through the implications of its burgeoning defence links with Tokyo?

Next week’s visit to Australia by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi marks a distinct tightening of the Canberra-Tokyo security relationship.

These closer defence ties represent the most extraordinary chapter in a near seven-decade story of post-war reconciliation since the two signed the 1957 Commerce Agreement.

Japan, Australia sign deal for production of first three frigates

Australia and Japan have signed a multi-billion-dollar contract for the production of the first three of Australia's new warships.

The federal government announced last year that Japanese company Mitsubishi had won the contract to provide the 11 warships, with the remainder to be built in Perth.

The first warship is scheduled for delivery in December 2029 and is expected to enter service in 2030.

Australia and Japan have announced they've signed a multi-billion-dollar contract for the first three of Australia's next generation of warships at a ceremony aboard a Mogami frigate anchored in Melbourne.

Defence Minister Richard Marles and his Japanese counterpart, Koizumi Shinjirō, joined top representatives from the massive Japanese conglomerate Mitsubishi Heavy Industries aboard JS Kumano to celebrate the agreement.

The Growing Pressure on Japan's Tourism Economy

Apr 13 (News On Japan) –
Japan is now facing a new challenge rarely seen before — a wave of foreign tourists unlike any in the country's history.

The pressure accompanying this surge is not merely logistical in nature, but also impacts fiscal policy, infrastructure capacity, and the quality of life of local communities.

This situation has forced the Tokyo government to respond more aggressively on matters of tourist management and redevelopment financing. The question is no longer whether this pressure exists, but how long existing systems can withstand it.

Tourists from Southeast Asia, including Malaysia, are increasingly aware that the cost of travelling to Japan continues to rise. This is prompting many of them to reassess their personal budgets, choose alternative destinations, or reduce the length of their stays. This shift in spending habits has also been observed in the digital entertainment sector.

Matildas provide rare moment of joy in a sport that keeps sinking to new lows

The redemption arc for Sam Kerr’s Matildas is not quite complete, but making the final of the women’s Asian Cup on Saturday night in Sydney is, in many ways, as good as a win.

Australia are outsiders for the match against Japan. The Matildas have jagged their way to the final in spite of being dominated in their last three matches.

A last-minute draw with South Korea was as bad as a loss, because it put Australia in a quarter-final with North Korea, described by Joe Montemurro as the best team in the tournament.

Japan has stormed into the Women's Asian Cup final against the Matildas, comprehensively outclassing South Korea 4-1 in their semi-final at Sydney's Stadium Australia.

Challenged by some as having had an easy ride to the semifinal, critics said Japan could not be judged until they played a team that was on their level.

Based on the evidence displayed in front of the smattering of 17,367 supporters at Homebush, the challenge will be finding a team that's even close to it.

Dozens of fans have flocked to a Japanese zoo to catch a glimpse of a baby macaque who shot to social media stardom months after being abandoned by his mother.

Viral monkey Punch rejected by mother given stuffed orangutan

An abandoned baby monkey who broke millions of hearts online, after being spotted hugging an orangutan stuffed toy given to him as a substitute for his mother, has finally found comfort among his own kind.

Punch, a young Japanese macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, went viral after videos showed him dragging around and playing with a soft toy that zookeepers gave him.

During the first few months of his life, he struggled to bond with the other monkeys in his zoo's enclosure and had only the company of his human keepers and the stuffed toy to rely on. But recent videos show he's turning things around. He was given a hug by one monkey and was seen grooming others, a key part of macaque socialisation.

Japan ETFs said likely to trade by 2028 as SBI, Nomura ready products

Crypto exchange-traded funds (ETFs) could be listed in Japan in 2028, Nikkei reported Monday, without saying where it got the information.

The regulator, the Financial Services Agency (FSA), plans to allow cryptocurrencies as specified assets for ETFs under the Investment Trust Act, Nikkei said, adding that asset management experts estimated crypto ETFs in Japan could reach 1 trillion yen ($6.4 billion).

A 2028 debut is later than reported by Reuters in November. The news organization said the FSA was refining rule changes that would allow crypto trading services and ETFs to come into effect in 2026 or 2027 after approval by parliament.

The regulator did not respond to a CoinDesk request for confirmation sent after Tokyo office hours.

Japanese finance firm hits back against Bitcoin ETF timeline: ‘2028 is too late’

Japanese finance firms are unhappy with government plans to delay the approval of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds for two years.

The top financial markets agency says the timeline is necessary to ensure its crypto ETF ban lifts in tandem with new digital asset tax reforms that are due to go live in 2028, Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

But at least one of these securities players says Tokyo is failing to act fast enough to keep up with global trends.

“Lifting the ban in 2028 is too late,” Tomoya Asakura, CEO of SBI Global Asset Management, wrote on X. “We strongly urge the government to lift the ban sooner rather than later.”

Australia Under-19 will be pleased with their bowling overall, though conceding 30 extras will be a concern as it pushed the target higher than necessary. William Byrom made an immediate impact on his return, striking with a superb delivery off his very first ball and finishing with two wickets, while Aryan Sharma and Kasey Barton claimed one each. The standout, however, was the leg-spinner, Naden Cooray, who ran through the middle order to take three, and while the chase is manageable, it should still offer the Australian batters a good chance to settle in and gain confidence. Dozens injured after magnitude 7.5 quake strikes northern Japan

At least 30 people were injured after a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit north-eastern Japan on Monday night, forcing thousands of people to evacuate their homes.

The quake occurred at 23:15 (14:15 GMT) at a depth of 50km (31mi), about 80km off the coast of the Aomori region, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. It prompted tsunami warnings which have now been lifted, while waves of 70cm (27in) were seen.

Some train services have been suspended and thousands of homes have been left without power as a result.

Authorities have also warned that a stronger tremor could occur in the coming days – urging the public to remain on high alert for at least a week, according to local media reports.

Japan tells residents to evacuate as powerful earthquake strikes north-east

90,000 people advised to take shelter after 7.5-magnitude quake, with 20 injuries reported

A powerful 7.5-magnitude earthquake has shaken north-eastern Japan, injuring more than 20 people and triggering a tsunami of up to 70cm in Pacific coast communities.

The earthquake and tsunami warnings prompted orders for about 90,000 residents to evacuate their homes, although the warnings were later downgraded to advisories.

Tsunami warnings were issued for the prefectures of Hokkaido, Aomori and Iwate, and tsunamis from 20 to 70cm (7 to 27in) high were observed at several ports, the Japan Meteorological Society said.

A tsunami of 70cm was measured in Kuji port in Iwate, just south of Aomori, and tsunami levels of up to 50cm struck other coastal communities in the region, they added.
