Jim Cramer says this hedge fund's blowup reveals the hidden risks of leverage

CNBC's Jim Cramer said on Thursday that Situational Awareness' collapse is a cautionary tale about the dangers of investing with borrowed money.

"For two weeks, I've been telling you to get off margin, stop using borrowed money," the "Mad Money" host said. "I didn't want you to get caught up in what some over-leveraged hedge fund was doing. I didn't want you to get blown out."

The AI-focused hedge fund, founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, was forced to unwind its highly leveraged bets on Thursday after suffering steep losses in recent weeks. Situational Awareness embraced the popular "long hardware, short software" trade, betting on AI infrastructure companies such as Micron while shorting software stocks viewed as vulnerable to AI disruption.

Leopold Aschenbrenner is the man at the center of the high-profile hedge fund meltdown that's dominating headlines and X feeds, after his once $20-billion-firm was forced to sell most of its public equity holdings to Citadel on Wednesday. Heralded as an AI savant, Aschenbrenner worked at, and was quite publicly fired from, OpenAI before founding his now flailing firm.

Aschenbrenner has stood out for his intellectual chops since he was a teenager. A German native with coiffed blonde hair, he arrived at Columbia University when he was only 15 and quickly joined the debate team, he told the school's internal communications team. He co-founded an "effective altruism" group at Columbia, based on the same philosophical movement Sam Bankman-Fried championed. In 2021, Aschenbrenner graduated as the class valedictorian at the age of 19.

MEXICO CITY — Raúl Jiménez has scored two goals for Mexico in the 2026 World Cup so far, and he's done it while wearing a unique piece of equipment.

The Mexican forward has been wearing a custom, medically-approved protective head guard for the past five years and will continue to do so for the remainder of his career.

On November 29, 2020, Jiménez suffered a catastrophic head injury while playing for Wolverhampton in a Premier League match against Arsenal. Jiménez clashed head-on with Arsenal defender David Luiz and was knocked unconscious.

Jiménez was immediately rushed to St. Mary’s hospital in London to receive emergency medical care. The collision resulted in a fractured skull and a brain injury that almost ended his life. Eight months of recovery later, Jiménez returned to the pitch in August 2021.

The Senate committee scrutinising contentious proposed NDIS cuts has been given an extension after a deal between the government and Greens.

The inquiry will now report in mid-August, with the government standing by its approach as "the right package" for the NDIS.

Disability advocates have welcomed a pause to a bill paving the way for the biggest-ever cuts to the NDIS, after a "ridiculous and disrespectful" Senate inquiry into the proposed overhaul of the scheme was given an eight-week extension.

Forty years ago, Muppets creator Jim Henson released his final feature film, Labyrinth, a dark children’s fantasy about a teenage girl, Sarah Williams (Jennifer Connelly in her screen debut), who had to save her infant brother, Toby (Toby Froud), from the Goblin King, Jareth, played by rock legend David Bowie.

Labyrinth wasn’t successful during its initial run in 1986 — a youth-skewing throwback adventure film populated by puppets failed to resonate with audiences in the age of Schwarzenegger and Stallone — but it has become such a beloved cult classic that it’s back in theaters this week to celebrate its 40th anniversary. While it’s heartening to see the film get its flowers now, it's easy to forget that Labyrinth was the victim of one of the more egregious snubs in Oscar history.
