Glenn A. Baker, an Australian rock music journalist, collector, commentator, author and broadcaster, has died. He was 74.
A long-time contributor to the Herald, Baker had recently been battling an illness, according to a close family friend.
In 2024, the fierce collector of records, CDs, books, magazines, newspaper clippings and other rock music ephemera put his record collection, estimated at over 80,000 items, up for auction.
An eminent music journalist and commentator for over 200 magazines and the author of at least 16 books, Baker was known for always donning variously coloured fezes – Ottoman-era Turkish headwear.
“I first wore it for fun for the cover of one of my travel books, sitting upon the engine of a 747 – they had to get a ladder to get me up there – and then when I went out to do interviews about it, people would say, ‘Oh, where’s the hat? You look great in the hat!’” Baker told Peter FitzSimons in 2024.

Beloved Australian music journalist and broadcaster Glenn A. Baker dies aged 74
A juggernaut of Australian music known for his vast knowledge of the industry, Glenn A. Baker, has died at the age of 74.
Baker’s friend and fellow music journalist, Stuart Coupe, announced he died on Friday morning.
“This is a post that I was hoping I wouldn’t be making for a considerable period of time,” Coupe said in a post to social media.
“But after an illness Glenn A. Baker passed away earlier this morning. I’m beyond sad.”
Baker is best known for his passion for Australian music, especially rock ‘n’ roll, during its explosion onto the international scene in the 1970s.
