    In defense of the defense — what it takes to be a defense attorney

    I’ve been asked that sort of question regarding the criminal defense profession more than once after people learn that I am currently covering the ongoing case of Tyler Robinson, who is charged with the murder of Charlie Kirk. After hearing the rhetorical question — underlined with a negative tone — I decided to ask it. Why do people choose to go into criminal defense law?

    “I came to criminal defense thinking that I was fighting the good fight, that I was standing up for the poor, the downtrodden, the oppressed against the power of the state,” criminal defense attorney Kathleen Heath said in a 2018 TED Talk. “But what I quickly learned is that there is another view of a criminal defense lawyer. One that perhaps holds a greater deal of cultural currency. And that’s the stereotype of the wily criminal defense lawyer — the one who would use verbal tricks, unscrupulous means, technical loopholes to make sure that undeserving, guilty criminals are let back out onto our streets.”

    Robinson’s lawyers said courtroom livestreams and photography were leading to sensational and slanted media coverage that could bias potential jurors in the aggravated murder case.

    Video: Psychologist testifies on how bias news commentary could taint Robinson’s right to a fair trial

    During Friday’s Tyler Robinson court hearing, a psychologist testified on why cameras should not be allowed during Robinson’s pretrial hearings.

    Dr. Bryan Edelman said that certain news media outlets and podcasters focused on creating “a performative experience” for viewers instead of being factual.

    One clip played showed a commentator calling Robinson a “monster” on national TV, with Edelman calling the commentary “sensationalism.”

    Judge: Trump can’t claim that entire White House ballroom project is needed for national security

    A federal judge has again ordered President Donald Trump to pause construction of a massive new ballroom at the White House, rejecting the president’s “disingenuous” bid to circumvent an earlier ruling against the project by claiming that it needed to proceed for national security reasons.

    The ruling Thursday from senior US District Judge Richard Leon is the latest episode in a winding legal saga around the controversial ballroom, which the judge said last month was being built unlawfully since Congress hadn’t expressly approved it.

    Leon, an appointee of former President George W. Bush, carved out an exception so that crews could continue working on a highly sophisticated bunker being installed under the proposed ballroom. But Trump had contended that the entire project was covered by that loophole since the aboveground structure “advances critical national-security objectives as an integrated whole.”

    Trump’s Go-To Justification for Contentious Decisions: National Security

    The administration has invoked national security in a variety of matters, including the White House ballroom and offshore wind farms, drawing rebukes from some judges.

    President Trump offered a surprising justification last month for forging ahead with construction of his White House ballroom: Halting the $400 million project would pose a grave threat to national security.

    “Everything is drone-proof and bulletproof,” Mr. Trump said, listing the security features of a bunker being built beneath the ballroom to protect the president in the event of an emergency.

    It was hardly the first time the administration had invoked national security to justify a contentious decision. Over the past year, top officials have cited similar concerns when stripping union rights from thousands of federal workers, pausing the construction of wind farms off the East Coast, and exempting oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico from protections for endangered species of whales.

    That victory came to light in an order from Judge Fernando Rodriguez, Jr., who tossed the complaint for lack of personal jurisdiction. We covered said complaint immediately after its July 2024 filing in a Texas federal court.

    In brief, across two amended actions, producer plaintiffs Joshua Fraustro and Miguel Aguilar (known publicly as Kemikal956) accused Cardi B (real name Belcalis Almánzar) of borrowing from their “Greasy Frybread” effort without permission to create “Enough (Miami).”

    Unsurprisingly, this included contributory and vicarious infringement claims against the major label defendant. However, the filing parties also sued for defamation, unfair competition, IP misappropriation, and more.

    Cardi B Shuts Down Producers Accusing Her of Stealing Music

    Cardi B and her record labels scored a legal win in the Lone Star State after being sued for allegedly using portions of another artist's song without permission … the lawsuit against them has just been thrown out of court for jurisdictional reasons.

    Here's the deal … Joshua Fraustro and Miguel Aguilar (AKA Kemika 1956) filed suit against Cardi B back in July 2024, claiming Cardi and her producers stole their secret sauce by using parts of their 2021 song "Greasy Frybread" on her March 2024 hit single, "Enough (Miami)."

    The lawsuit was filed in Texas … but according to new legal docs obtained by TMZ, it was dismissed due to a lack of personal jurisdiction. Translation: the judge ruled Fraustro and Aguilar didn't establish that the Texas court had the power to deal with the case.

    Mr Abbott said it is was a "slippery slope when unelected judges start making political judgments".

    Two Supreme Court judges “who have been the subject of highly personalised and misconceived criticism in some sections of the media for particular decisions have received death threats in the last 18 months”, Bell said.

    The chief justice of New South Wales has criticised former prime minister Tony Abbott for what he says was a regrettable, misconceived and ignorant attack on a judge’s decision regarding last year’s pro-Palestine Sydney Harbour Bridge march.

    Andrew Bell said in a speech on Thursday evening that Abbott’s post on X in August last year threatened social cohesion.

    Abbott commented on a NSW supreme court decision before the Gaza harbour bridge march that an estimated 225,000 to 300,000 people attended.
