Body cam video shows police walk into hazing incident at Iowa fraternity house

Newly public police-worn body camera footage from a hazing case at a University of Iowa fraternity show over two dozen blindfolded men covered in substances in a basement, over a year after the initial incident.

Iowa City police and fire departments and the University of Iowa police responded to a fire alarm at the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house on Nov. 15, 2024, where they discovered 56 blindfolded pledges, with food thrown on them.

The university investigated the incident and ultimately suspended the fraternity for four years until 2029.

Here's what we know about the recently released footage and the hazing case.

In edited footage posted to YouTube by The CrimePiece, which has more than 630,000 views, police and firefighters are seen responding to the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house. The Iowa City Press-Citizen, part of the USA TODAY Network, also obtained the same unedited body-cam footage from the University of Iowa Police Department.

rory mcilroy confident as Genesis Invitational begins at Riviera on Thursday

Rory McIlroy arrives at the Genesis Invitational optimistic about his form and intent on sharpening his game before he returns to Augusta to defend his Masters title in April. The world number two will tee off on Thursday (ET) in a group that includes Tommy Fleetwood and reigning Pebble Beach champion Collin Morikawa.

McIlroy conceded that his recent start to the season has been about shaking off some early rust, but he said there were enough positives from last week to carry into the Riviera Country Club. He finished tied for 14th at Pebble Beach, five shots behind Morikawa, and closed with an eye-catching 64 on Sunday.

‘I just needed some time for myself’: Norwegian skier hides in woods after slalom gold heartache

For more than a century of Winter Olympic sport, athletes have dealt with defeat in almost every possible way: tears, tantrums, breaking things, breaking down. On Monday afternoon in Bormio, the Norwegian Atle Lie McGrath processed his grief in a novel way after the men’s slalom gold medal had slipped away. First, he threw his ski poles as far as he could and then he hid in the woods.

“I just needed to get away from everything,” he said. “I thought I would get some peace and quiet, which I didn’t because photographers and police found me out in the woods. I just needed some time for myself.”

BORMIO, Italy — The day on the slalom hill saw a little bit of everything — fog, snow, sunshine, crashes, a larger-than-typical field and, of course, an epic meltdown.

Loic Meillard of Switzerland used a strong second run to win the men's slalom Monday, becoming the first men's Swiss ski racer to win the Olympic slalom since 1948.

The event closes out the men's Alpine program at the Milan Cortina Games.

Meillard adds gold to a silver he won in the team combined and bronze from the giant slalom.

Maddison Inglis has chosen an unlikely gift for herself to celebrate her fairytale run from qualifying to the last 16 at this year’s Australian Open.

Inglis became Iga Swiatek’s latest scalp on Monday night as the superstar Pole hunts a maiden title at Melbourne Park to complete her grand slam set, overwhelming the West Australian underdog 6-0, 6-3 in 73 minutes on Rod Laver Arena.

Australian qualifier Inglis embraces AO opportunity against Swiatek

Qualifier Maddison Inglis has the chance to continue her dream run and go where no Australian woman has at Melbourne Park since retired great Ash Barty in 2022.

Career Grand Slam-chasing Iga Swiatek was planning some last-minute study up of Maddison Inglis to hopefully avoid suffering a Melbourne Park ambush at the hands of the Australian qualifier.

The second-seeded Swiatek had been expecting to face two-time champion Naomi Osaka for a place in the Australian Open quarterfinals on Monday.

Instead, Osaka’s withdrawal with an abdominal strain has left an overjoyed Inglis as the reigning Wimbledon champion’s surprise fourth-round opponent.

Forget diamonds or a sports car, Maddison Inglis's plans for her "life-changing" Australian Open prize-money include buying a new blue toaster and maybe even a matching kettle.

Inglis was the last Australian remaining in the women's draw before falling to world No.2 Iga Swiatek 6-0 6-3 on Monday night.

She raised her arms in triumph, celebrating with the Rod Laver Arena crowd when she finally got on the scoreboard, breaking Swiatek to take a 1-0 lead in the second set.

Emma Stone Just Broke Oscar Nominations Records With Her ‘Bugonia’ Nods

Stone was nominated in the best actress and best picture categories, the latter for her producer role on the film.

Emma Stone‘s two 2026 Oscar nominations on Thursday — best picture for producing and best actress for starring in Bugonia — broke a few Oscar records.

The 37-year-old has become the second-youngest person — and the youngest woman — in Oscar history to accumulate seven nominations. Only Walt Disney was younger when he reached that tally in 1936, at just 34. Meryl Streep had held the record for women; she was 38 when she was nominated for the seventh time, back in 1988.

Stone also became the first woman to be nominated twice for producing and acting in a single film. Frances McDormand was the first, for 2021’s Nomadland. Stone followed with dual noms for 2023’s Poor Things. And now she has done it again.

How to Watch Emma Stone’s Oscar-Worthy Performance in ‘Bugonia’

Could Emma Stone be on the way to winning her third Oscar? The actress has been getting plenty of buzz for her latest film, Bugonia, in which she stars as a powerful CEO (who is believed to be a secret alien). The performance has already earned her nominations for a Golden Globe and Actor Award, and now she’s earned a nod for an Academy Award, too. The film is also nominated for Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and Original Score at the Oscars.

Bugonia, which premiered during the 2025 Venice Film Festival and then opened in theaters in October, marks Stone’s fourth collaboration with Yorgos Lanthimos, who previously directed her in Poor Things (which earned Stone her second Oscar), The Favourite, and Kinds of Kindness.

Stranger Things Just Made Will Responsible for One of the Show’s Biggest Deaths

The stakes in the final season of Stranger Things have reached a fever pitch. As we navigate the emotional fallout from Season 5, Part 2, suspense has shifted from inter-dimensional monsters to the devastating weight of personal trauma and accountability. In Episodes 5 through 7, the spotlight returns to Will Byers—the once powerless young boy who is now a “wizard” in his own right. In Season 2, the reveal that the Mind Flyer was possessing Will to advance its own agenda was seen as yet another tragic circumstance of his cycle of victimhood. But now, the final season has delivered a gut-wrenching twist: Will’s role as the “spy” was far more active than anyone ever knew or feared. By diving into the hive mind’s mechanics, Season 5 implies that Will did more than unknowingly create tunnels for the Mind Flayer—he was directly responsible for Bob Newby’s (Sean Astin) death. Though the Demodogs were physically responsible for Bob’s mortal wounds, a possessed Will was the reason for everything that occurred in Season 2. This crushing revelation sets the stage for the epic series finale.

    Battery fire warning

Noosa’s fire chief has issued a warning about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries, particularly over the New Year period.

Station Officer Brian Riley said there were many dangers with over-charging the batteries, particularly on e-bikes and scooters.

“We’ve had cases where a phone was being charged overnight under a dooner and it caught fire,” Mr Riley said.

He said the batteries can cause fires that are hard to put out, can restart even if they appear to be out and create toxic fumes and explosive gas.

Apart from phones and e-bikes, they are also used for power tools, cordless vacuums, laptops, toys and cameras. Even electric toothbrushes.

In Just 7 Minutes, This Fantasy Character Cements His Status as an Iconic Villain

Fantasy literature has spawned plenty of iconic villains, and those villains have become even more iconic thanks to the rise of book-to-film adaptations. Who could forget when Sauron sent the forces of Man flying left and right with his massive mace in the opening of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring? Or the Wicked Witch of the West summoning her army of flying monkeys in The Wizard of Oz? One villain managed to have his own iconic scene, which involved coming back from the edge of Death — Lord Voldemort's resurrection in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Some of the best scenes in the entire Harry Potter movie franchise involve the Great Hall and all manner of celebrations during the Halloween and Christmas seasons. In the past, we’ve heard about how the Great Hall scenes brought a sense of wonder to James and Oliver Phelps, and other Potter cast members when they first entered the sets set up for feasts and more. Given how realistic and magical everything looked, I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise the kids had trouble differentiating between what was real and fake in the scenes, and that trickled down to the food.
