Keating pushes to merge Centrelink with superannuation

Former prime minister Paul Keating – the architect of the nation’s sprawling $4.5 trillion superannuation sector – has told the government to integrate its public social security system with the private retirement savings sector, in what would be the single biggest shake-up of the aged pension in decades.

The radical proposal to merge parts of Centrelink into the big superannuation funds came as Aware Super chief executive Deanne Stewart told a meeting that a growing number of retired Australians were drawing down only minimal amounts from their nest eggs because they feared running out of money.

A previous version of this story cited Wayne Swan as saying there was merit in Paul Keating’s idea to merge Centrelink and super. This has been clarified to reflect that Swan only agreed that super funds needed to provide more guidance in retirement.

Washington: Katherine Keating, daughter of former prime minister Paul Keating, has spoken out about her “unfortunate” friendship with Jeffrey Epstein after a long trail of emails between her and the convicted sex offender featured in the latest release of documents by the US Department of Justice.

The documents show how Keating maintained a social relationship with Epstein for several years in the early 2010s, regularly arranging to visit his New York mansion and seeking his career advice as she tried to build a career in the American television industry.

Washington | Katherine Keating, the daughter of former prime minister Paul Keating, appears to have been enlisted to paint former British royal Andrew Mountbatten in a positive light to a journalist, according to newly released files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Hundreds of emails between Keating and Epstein, or his assistants, released on Friday (Saturday AEDT), shed new light on the pair’s friendship and suggest they socialised regularly between 2010 and 2013. In that period, the late disgraced financier had already served 13 months in prison after being convicted of child sex charges in 2008.
