Last weekend stung. A 1-0 loss to the Central Coast Mariners was gut-wrenching, but Sunday is far from a meaningless fixture. This group needs to dust themselves off and come out firing against Sydney FC because there is still plenty on the line.

Last weekend’s defeat to the Mariners handed the Premiership title to Newcastle, and fair play to the Jets; it’s a well-earned achievement.

But there’s still plenty for Auckland FC to fight for. We head to Allianz Stadium on Sunday to face Sydney FC. We’re currently sitting second and need the win to guarantee a bye next weekend and to avoid an Elimination Final.

Gold Demand Trends: Q4 and Full Year 2025

Total gold demand in 2025, including OTC, exceeded 5,000t for the first time. Combined with the record-breaking run in the gold price – setting 53 new all-time highs during the year – this yielded an unprecedented value of US$555bn (+45% y/y).

Heightened investment activity drove overall demand growth: global gold ETF holdings grew 801t – the second strongest year on record – while bar and coin buying accelerated to reach a 12-year high.

Safe-haven and diversification motives were consistent themes driving investment interest throughout the year, along with price-driven motivations.

Central bank purchases of 863t reached the upper end of our expected 2025 range; they remain historically elevated and geographically widespread but have slowed from their recent pace.

Record numbers of Australians want to keep Australia Day on January 26. After a summer marked by anger and division following the Bondi killings, seven out of 10 people reject the call to change the date.

Support for January 26 has climbed steadily in the past three years in exclusive polls for this masthead conducted by Resolve Political Monitor. Only 47 per cent backed the date in January 2023, but 56 per cent supported it in January 2024, shortly after the failed Voice to parliament referendum.

Now, 68 per cent back the current national day despite the objections of Indigenous Australians to celebrating the nation on the day the first fleet arrived and colonisation began.

Opposition to moving Australia Day from January 26 is hardening: new research

The most striking result from our late 2025 wave is not a shift in overall opinion, but a hardening of opposition to changing the date. While the balance between those who support and those who oppose change has remained stable, fewer Australians are sitting in the middle. This means more are expressing strong disagreement with changing the date of Australia Day.

After easing past Katie Volynets and Priscilla Hon, the fearless 29th seed toppled seventh seed Jasmine Paolini 6-2 7-6(3) in the third round on Friday, securing her maiden top 10 win and first over the Italian in three efforts.

The youngest player in the Top 100, 18-year-old Iva Jovic, dealt out the biggest upset of the tournament so far with a 6-2, 7-6(3) third-round defeat of No. 7 seed Jasmine Paolini.

The result put No. 29 seed Jovic into the second week of a major for the first time at just her sixth attempt. It's also her first win over a Top 10 player in four meetings. Two of the American teenager's three previous losses had come against Paolini, at Indian Wells and the US Open last year.

"I've been wanting this one for a while now," Jovic said in her on-court interview. "Had a couple of tough losses. I'm so happy to get through that barrier and get that win today."

Christopher Nkunku scored in the 90th minute to earn Milan a 1-1 draw at Fiorentina on Sunday but, despite extending their unbeaten league run, the visitors continue to lose ground in the Serie A title race with their second stalemate in four days.
