White Ferns v South Africa: Kerr century sees NZ post 194 in Christchurch

An Amelia Kerr masterclass has seen the White Ferns complete a comprehensive T20 series victory over South Africa, sealing a 4-1 triumph with a 92-run win in Christchurch.

With the series already sealed after wins in Auckland and Wellington over the weekend, the White Ferns’ skipper put a full stop
    on her side’s victory.

The 25-year-old belted a career-best 105 off just 55 deliveries as the major factor in New Zealand’s 194-6, and surpassed her unbeaten 101 scored against Zimbabwe last month to outscore South Africa on her own.

After the last two wins were sealed chasing, Christchurch saw the White Ferns defend a total, as their 194-6 was met with just 102-9 in reply.

160 for 4 – New Zealand's total on Sunday which marked their second-highest in a successful chase in women's T20Is. The only time they've gone better was against South Africa as well, when they took down a target of 173 in Benoni three years ago.

This was also the highest successful chase by any team on New Zealand soil, overtaking South Africa who had chased down 153 in Wellington in 2020.

4 of New Zealand's top five chases in women's T20Is have come against South Africa. And Sophie Devine scored a fifty in each of those games.

Sam Kerr is the only Australian to win golden boot at the Asian Cup. A teammate in a new position could be next

If you had to guess which Matilda would most likely win the golden boot at the Women's Asian Cup before a ball had been kicked, Alanna Kennedy would unlikely be first to mind.

But the Australian veteran leads the race to do exactly that.

A move from being a defender to a holding midfielder has worked a treat for Kennedy, who has become the top goalscorer for the national team at the Women's Asian Cup.

Not only has she sent the most goals into the net for the Matildas, she also is equal with Japan's Riko Ueki on the leaderboard for the most goals scored in the tournament so far.

Stroke of genius or stroke of luck: What goal machine Kennedy reveals about Montemurro’s Matildas

A stroke of genius or a stroke of luck? SAMANTHA LEWIS unpacks what Alanna Kennedy’s Asian Cup moment says about Joe Montemurro’s midfield.

Alanna Kennedy was not even in frame when Sam Kerr bodied An Kuk Hyang off the ball and tore towards the box.

She wasn’t there when the Matildas captain cut the ball back towards Emily Van Egmond, stationed all alone near the D, nor when Chae Un Yong stuck out a hopeful toe to try and poke it away.

But then, suddenly, there she was: her long, loping limbs apparating just outside the paint, producing a neat, futsal-like roll of the ball under her right foot before sending it flat and fizzing into the back of the net with her left.

Alanna Kennedy is quick to point out she was a striker as a kid.

“I love it whenever we get the chance to shoot in training – I always want to be shooting,” she says. “I enjoy that part of football. I just see it as an opportunity to cause a bit of disruption. But also, if the ball falls at my feet, I’d like to back myself to finish that.”

Matildas Captain Sam Kerr has watched Bend It Like Beckham Many times

It’s a movie that kicks goals in terms of South Asian representation, brown girls in sport and challenging cultural norms. And Matildas captain Sam Kerr seems to be right on board.

When it comes to football references in pop culture, Bend It Like Beckham has remained a fan favourite since its release back in 2002. Directed by Gurinder Chadha, the movie followed British Indian woman Jesminder ‘Jess’ Bhamra’s (Parminder Nagra) plight to pursue professional football, despite her Punjabi parents’ desires for her to focus on her studies and eventually find a nice brown boy to marry.

Whether it was the fancy footwork on the field, the friendship between Jess and Jules (Keira Knightley), the exploration of dual-cultural identity, or the Indian wedding photographer’s hilarious antics (“Eyes down. Don’t smile. Indian bride never smiles. You’ll ruin the bloody video”)… chances are this film resonated with you and made you smile in some way.

Main Roads WA told locals to “expect heavy foot traffic and frequently stopping vehicles in the area,” and also warned of tow away zones.

Rideshare services will be available on Sailani Avenue in East Perth.

A strong crowd is expected at Tuesday night’s semi-final and the Matildas’ game on Friday night at HBF park.

Sam Kerr penned a letter to Matilda’s fans on Monday, thanking them for their support over the tourament.
