John Ribot will always remember the day the Broncos announced they had shot Bambi.
After just two years in the competition, Wayne Bennett had sacked Wally Lewis as captain following the 1989 season.
“I had to be the bearer of bad news then. It was the first public hanging in Brisbane for a hundred or so years,” quipped Ribot, the club’s inaugural chief executive, who was in charge when the club won its first two titles in 1992 and 1993.
“That was probably the most controversial thing we did – we had to tell Wally we had to move him on.”

Dolphins coach Kristian Woolf has refused to rule out luring Ben Te’o back to Redcliffe following the former State of Origin enforcer’s resignation from his position as defence coach at the Brisbane Broncos.
Te’o sent shockwaves through the NRL after resigning, with reports emerging of a falling out with the club and head coach Michael Maguire.
It was reported Te’o clashed with Maguire over team tactics before their triumph over the Melbourne Storm, which came after his hopes of joining the Maroons’ coaching staff was knocked back by Broncos hierarchy.

Brisbane coach Michael Maguire has refuted he has a "my way or the highway" approach after being peppered about the resignation of defensive coach Ben Te'o.
Te'o, who also won the 2014 premiership as a player at South Sydney under Maguire, resigned on Tuesday after deciding his position at the club had become untenable.
While none of the key players have gone into detail about the exact reasons why, it is understood the pair have butted heads over a period of time.
