Charlie Kirk's family alleges 'stunning failures' by Utah officials led to his shooting
Charlie Kirk's family has accused the Utah Valley University and state officials of "stunning failures and reckless decisions" that they say led to the conservative activist's 2025 assassination during a campus event.
In a legal notice, lawyers for the family say Kirk's Turning Point USA event at the university campus was not properly secured or monitored, making him an easy target.
Kirk, 31, was speaking to a crowd of thousands on the university campus, when he was shot and killed by a gunman positioned on a roof.
The university said it was aware of the claim but did not comment further on the allegations, according to a statement shared with the BBC's US partner CBS News.

OREM — The family of Charlie Kirk has put Utah Valley University and the state of Utah on notice that they intend to sue.
The Charlie Kirk estate and its heirs, including Erika Kirk and her two children, as well as "prospective plaintiffs" that include Charlie Kirk's parents, Robert and Kathryn Kirk, have filed a notice of claim against UVU, the UVU Police Department, police Chief Jeffrey Long, former UVU President Astrid Tuminez and the state of Utah.
The notice states that the Kirk family intends to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the defendants whose "negligence" and "failures … led to the assassination" of Charlie Kirk.

The family of Charlie Kirk prepared the way for a lawsuit against Utah Valley University by notifying the state on Sept. 9 of wrongful death claims, alleging that security failures by UVU led to Kirkâs assassination.
No dollar figure was included in the filing. But the potential damages are âsubstantial,â according to the document obtained by the Deseret News.
Under Utah code, a spouse, child or parent of an individual who died because of the negligent actions of a government employee must file a notice of claim within one year of the death and a formal lawsuit within two years.
