Knights v Raiders: Trey's day; Big Papa back on deck

Last year's minor premiers Canberra and wooden spooners the Knights go head-to-head in Round 5 – but the formline has completely switched places.

Under new coach Justin Holbrook, Newcastle have found their steely edge and come into the game with a 3-1 record after defeating the Cowboys, Manly and the Bulldogs so far this season. There loss was in Round 3 to the Warriors.

Against the Bulldogs last week, they overcame the odds – as well as having a player in the sin bin – to defend their way to a 24-16 victory.

The Raiders however have an 1-3 record and are still looking to add another victory after posting a golden point victory over Manly in Round 1.

The Raiders have triumphed in only one of their opening four matches to sit 15th on the ladder.

Ricky Stuart says he is confident the Raiders can turn their season around.

Canberra coach Ricky Stuart insists the Raiders are not panicking after making a poor start to the NRL season.

The Raiders, who won the minor premiership last year, are 1-3 (win-loss) through the opening four rounds.

Their attack has struggled to fire in 2026, with the Raiders scoring just 16.8 points per match as compared to their 26.7 average last season.

Spooners to 2-0… but Knights rocked by $2.7m double injury blow in ‘insipid’ Manly thrashing

The Knights may be 2-0 after a thumping win over Manly, but it’s hard for their fans to celebrate too hard given they will be without $2.7m of their salary cap next week with superstars Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown both going off injured.

The 36-16 victory at 4 Pines Park continued Justin Holbrook’s dream start at the helm after they claimed the wooden spoon last season, but the coach will be praying for a positive result after his two best players suffered leg injuries.

The Newcastle Knights are counting the cost of a 36-16 win over Manly after superstars Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown both missed the entire second half at Brookvale Oval with injuries.

Ponga was cut down by a hamstring injury while scoring a 90-metre team try and tried to play on before succumbing, while halfback Dylan Brown suffered a left knee injury while setting up a try for Ponga's replacement, Fletcher Hunt, just before half-time.

"It's not ideal two playmakers going down, but the boys did the job for us massive," Ponga said.

Justin Holbrook loses another star Dylan Brown to knee injury

The injury toll for the Knightss continues to build up, as Dylan Brown suffered a MCL injury in the first half against the Manly Sea Eagles.

In the 25th minute, Ponga went down grabbing his right hamstring after scoring a try.

Dylan Brown was on the ground with the trainer shortly after, suffering an MCL injury while setting up Fletcher Hunt for a try.

He continued playing until the end of the first half, but the discomfort showed on Brown's face and the decision was called for him to leave the game.

The playmaker is most likely set to miss a month on the sidelines.
