Labor heartlands home to biggest NDIS fraud risks

The 10 worst electorates for National Disability Insurance Scheme provider compliance issues are all traditionally Labor-held outer suburban seats in western Sydney and north-west Melbourne.

Those are the results of the Kismet Care Index, which uses public data on enforcement actions against providers and utilisation rates of NDIS packages to shed new light on where the $50-billion-a-year scheme is going off the rails.

Sovereignty is the new black in a post-globalisation world

Rebuilding Australia’s lost sovereignty will take serious money, either through subsidy, strategic deregulation or regulatory incentives.

That Australia is close to running out of liquid fuel should not surprise us. We got rid of all but two refineries, converted one of Sydney’s largest storage tanks to an art gallery and until three years ago counted fuel supplies in the US as part of our required reserve.

Sure, the Morrison government committed $203 million to support expanded fuel storage in 2020, the Albanese government tipped in a fraction more and that additional storage, much of it only now coming online, has brought us nowhere near the 90-days supply the International Energy Agency requires. Successive Australian governments agreed and then, with exceptions, ignored the requirement.

Labor appears set to reform capital gains tax discount after parliamentary inquiry findings

Report reveals the Howard-era settings are helping fuel intergenerational inequality in Australia’s housing market

Labor has given one of its strongest signals yet the capital gains tax discount will be reworked in the May budget, with a parliamentary inquiry finding the Howard-era settings are helping fuel intergenerational inequality in Australia’s housing market.

A Greens-led parliamentary inquiry said the 50% discount “skewed the ownership of housing away from owner-occupiers and towards investors”.

“The benefits of the capital gains tax discount are also unequally distributed, with implications for income and wealth inequality and intergenerational inequality,” the report released on Tuesday found.

A Senate inquiry has provided Treasurer Jim Chalmers with ammunition for his plan to pare back the capital gains tax discount in the May 12 budget.

The majority report of the inquiry into the operation of the capital gains tax discount, tabled Tuesday, concluded that while various factors influenced housing markets, there was evidence the discount, combined with negative gearing, had “skewed the ownership of housing away from owner-occupiers and towards investors”.

Labor will pass legislation to increase the tax on those with super balances of more than $3 million, ending a years-long stalemate.

The tax bill will pass the Senate this week without amendment, after Labor secured the support of the Greens.

The Greens say their support is a "down payment" of goodwill in the hope Labor will pursue more ambitious tax policies in the budget.

Greens say support for superannuation tax changes is a ‘down payment’ on Labor pursuing genuine reform in 12 May federal budget

Labor’s plan to raise the tax rate on the largest super balances will become law after the Greens agreed to wave it through the Senate, ending a three-year political fight over concessions for wealthier retirees.

The Greens’ treasury spokesperson, Nick McKim, said the decision to support the watered-down package was a green light for Labor to pursue “bold reform” in the upcoming federal budget, including scaling back the capital gains tax discount and negative gearing.

Canadian Crypto Fugitive Slips Dragnet in Serbia, Surfaces in Bosnia

As his flight departed from Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport en route to Kuwait via Istanbul, Canadian crypto fugitive Andean Medjedovic was unaware that his globe-trotting lifestyle would soon be halted.

Just two weeks later, on December 11, 2023, Dutch authorities issued a European arrest warrant for the then 21-year-old, alleging he had pulled off a “sophisticated hack” that netted him $48 million US in cryptocurrency.

A native of Hamilton in the Canadian province of Ontario, Medjedovic graduated from high school at 14 and received a master’s degree in pure mathematics at 18; nine months after the arrest warrant was issued, he was arrested in Serbia.

An administrative building located next to the Saint Nektarios church in Croydon, Adelaide, was engulfed in flames on Friday night, but the fire did not spread to the church or a neighbouring nursing home.

According to initial reports, the Fire Department and emergency services were called to Regency Road shortly after 8pm when the fire broke out under unspecified circumstances.

The administrative building was completely destroyed, however, thanks to the immediate intervention of the firefighters the Greek Orthodox church and the adjacent nursing home were saved.

Liberals divided over Labor's plan to outlaw inciting racial hatred

Some backbench MPs have publicly raised concerns over some of the proposed changes to hate speech laws. (ABC News: Ian Cutmore)

The Coalition is split over whether a proposed new offence that would make it illegal to incite or promote racial hatred is at odds with its broader interests in preserving freedom of speech.

Liberal backbenchers, including Andrew Hastie, publicly raised concerns about some of the proposed changes.

Labor is continuing to consult over the new legislation, which will be introduced to parliament in a special sitting next week.

Liberals are divided over Labor's proposed hate speech laws making it a criminal offence to incite or promote racial hatred that sparks fears of intimidation, harassment or safety.

A bid to ban extremist groups following the Bondi massacre will be good for Australia, the nation's spy chief says, as he warns there is "permission" for politically motivated violence in society.

Draft laws to be debated next week in parliament when it returns early would introduce a framework to outlaw hate groups that fall below a threshold to designate them a terrorist organisation.
