The Ardie factor looms large over the big Pacific clash in Lautoka – ABC Pacific

The opening round of the new Super Rugby Pacific season will feature the Battle of the Pacific when the Fijian Drua take on Moana Pasifika at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

2026 will be a crucial year for both sides, with Moana adapting to life without their superstar captain, Ardie Savea, while the Drua will be under pressure to raise their game to reflect the Fiji union's rise to tier one status.

But the New Zealand Herald's rugby analyst, Gregor Paul, says the Drua have one very obvious problem: how to win a match outside the country.

While for Moana, the absence of the Ardie factor just can not be ignored.

Fans allowed on the field after Drua and Moana clash

Fans attending the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season opener between the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika will be allowed to enter the field at Churchill Park after the sound of the final hooter.

The Drua franchise confirmed this yesterday, marking a shift from previous seasons where post-match field access was restricted.

The initiative is part of the Fijian Drua’s effort to enhance the match-day experience at their home venues, bringing fans closer to the action and the players they support.

Supporters will have the opportunity to greet players from both sides and take photos, adding an extra layer of excitement to the “Battle of the Pacific”.

Update: The Bureau of Meteorology cancelled the severe thunderstorm warning at 6.50pm. The original story follows.

The Bureau of Meteorology says the severe thunderstorm warning has eased for the greater Wollongong area, but the redevelopment of storms remains possible.

A trough is triggering severe thunderstorms and causing a moist and unstable environment, with supercell thunderstorms detected to the north-east of the ACT.

The bureau says the storms are likely to produce heavy rainfall, which may lead to flash flooding, large hailstones, and damaging wind, and were detected near the north-west parts of the Wollondilly Shire, Nowra, and the Morton National Park.

Severe Thunderstorms And Hail Forecast For Parts Of NSW This Weekend

After a long stretch of sunny days, parts of NSW are expected to see showers and thunderstorms moving in toward the weekend, with hail possible in some areas.
