Doctors warn of serious risks as peptide products gain popularity online

RICHMOND, Va. (WWBT) – Peptides are being promoted online for everything from weight loss to anti-aging as they become one of the biggest trends in the wellness world.

The FDA is expected to weigh easing restrictions later this summer, but doctors warn some of these products may come with serious risks.

Peptides are being marketed as a quick fix for weight loss, anti-aging and muscle growth on platforms from TikTok to targeted ads.

“A peptide is a chain of amino acids … almost like a precursor to proteins,” said Dr. Giancarlo Pierantoni.

Some peptides, like GLP-1 medications, are FDA-approved and prescribed by doctors. But others are showing up in what experts call a “gray market.”

What Peptides Can Tell Us About the Future of Beauty

Ever heard of a peptide? The internet’s latest biohacking craze, these are the injectables promising clear skin, bigger muscles, and lower body fat with heaps of energy. If user content on social media is to be believed, they seem like a beauty fix-all. But upon closer inspection, there are some murky truths.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids, also known as microproteins, which your body naturally creates, to regulate processes like hormone release, metabolism, immune response, and tissue repair. Scientists can artificially replicate these peptides to mimic their natural properties, the most prominent examples of this being GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide-1), the weight-loss drugs, or diabetes drug insulin. Those peptides are approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). But many of the peptides hawked by manosphere personalities and other influencers, are not approved for human consumption.

Police have zeroed in on a notorious youth gang linked to multiple murders and other serious crimes, with a series of mass raids and arrests.

Victoria Police said 40 gang members, aged between 17 and 26, are now subject to a Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO) after raids on their homes over the past fortnight.

The firearm bans allow police to conduct unannounced searches on the gang members to ensure they are not in possession of guns or other weapons.

A youth gang behind more than 4500 criminal offences is being monitored by Victoria Police, with 41 of its members now subject to a Firearm Prohibition Order (FPO).

A Sebastopol youth is among the gang members who have received the orders.

Detectives from the Gang Crime Squad, along with VIPER and Echo taskforces and detectives from the north-west metro and western regions have served 19 FPOs on gang members over the past two weeks.

Victoria Police says the gang, which they have not named, has 41 members between the ages of 17 and 26 who have received firearm bans.

Arsenal are looking to further their lead at the top of the Premier League as they welcome Everton, and you can follow it all with ESPN.

Today's hosts were last in action midweek — as they were held by Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their last-16 tie, with Kai Havertz scoring a late penalty against his former club.

Eighth-placed Everton haven't played since a 2-0 win over Burnley on March 3, with James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall delivering the goals. A 12-day gap should mean today's guests are well-rested.

How bad were Arsenal in midweek? Not as bad as the other English teams in the Champions League. Their 1-1 draw at Bayer Leverkusen didn’t look good at the time but turned out to be the best result of the round, equal with Newcastle (1-1 v Barcelona) and arguably better because Arsenal are at home for the second leg. But quite a few Arsenal fans seem to feel their team are a bit jaded: it will be interesting to see if Havertz, Calafiori and Madueke can galvanise them.

Will Everton's formidable away form upset Arsenal's title challenge?

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall was a key part of a 12th away win since the return of David Moyes as manager against Newcastle United two weeks ago

As a man with 745 games managed, David Moyes knows his way better than most around the Premier League block, particularly when it comes to winning away games.

Since the 62-year-old returned to Merseyside for a second spell 14 months ago, Everton have won the most matches on the road of any Premier League side other than Arsenal.

The Toffees are unbeaten away from home since mid-December and next travel to Emirates Stadium on Saturday with a record of four wins in their past five away matches.

India’s remarkable Women's Asian Cup chance boosted by cricket team across town | Mrinal Asija

Blue Tigresses have overcome off-field chaos and crises to make this tournament and can look to their women’s cricketers for hope

The Indian women’s football team’s quest for history got off to a bittersweet start in Perth on Wednesday. The players had put aside the off-field turbulence they faced in the lead-up to put up a strong fight on the field, only to concede an injury time goal and go down 1-2 to Vietnam.

Despite the result, the game was significant as a marker of how far the Blue Tigresses had come and where they could go, but also for the atmosphere they were greeted with at the Perth Rectangular Stadium.

Arsenal take on Chelsea in a huge game at the top of the Premier League, and you can follow it all here with ESPN.

After Manchester City saw off Leeds yesterday, just two points separate City from Mikel Arteta's men before this Sunday afternoon clash at the Emirates.

Liam Rosenior and Chelsea will remember the last time these two sides met — a second-leg defeat in the Carabao Cup in February, but victory here would see them leapfrog Liverpool into fifth.

Arsenal head into this clash buoyed after a 4-1 thrashing of their arch-rivals Tottenham Hotspur last weekend, as Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyökeres both scored a brace.

Tottenham vs. Arsenal: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

North London Derby day beckons, as relegation-threatened Tottenham Hotspur take on stuttering Premier League leaders Arsenal on Sunday afternoon.

A winless start to 2026, combined with a perilous league position, means Spurs finally parted ways with Thomas Frank after eight miserable months. So, former Juventus manager Igor Tudor will lead the Lilywhites into battle this weekend for a significant derby.

Tottenham missed out on derailing Arsenal’s title tilt two seasons ago, but they have a huge opportunity to kick their fiercest rivals while they’re down on home soil. Mikel Arteta’s side should be cantering towards the league title, but they’ve instead contrived to lose control of the race.

Refreshed de Minaur returns in style in the Netherlands

Refreshed after a fortnight's R&R, Alex de Minaur has returned to the court in winning style as top seed at the Rotterdam Open.

Runner-up at the past two editions in the Netherlands, de Minaur out-gunned heavy-hitting Frenchman Arthur Fils 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 to power into the second round for a sixth straight year.

The world No.8 was playing his first match since losing to the top-ranked Carlos Alcaraz in last month's Australian Open quarter-finals.

De Minaur wasted little time in reminding the field why he is the player to beat this week after losing last year's final in three sets to Alcaraz and the 2024 title match to two-time Australian Open champion and then world No.1 Jannik Sinner.

Doggett latest on expanding list of injured quicks

South Australia's Brendan Doggett is the latest bowler to go down with a significant injury as we catalogue all the late-season afflictions for Australian cricket's fast bowling stocks

Australia's Test captain was sidelined with a lumbar bone stress issue after last year's Caribbean tour. A carefully managed rehab allowed him to play one Test match during the Ashes and, with the series won, was put back on ice. He was close, but not close enough to get up for the T20 World Cup and will instead return to action at this year's Indian Premier League.

Initially hurt his hamstring playing in the Sheffield Shield ahead of the Ashes series. Then suffered an injury to his Achilles during his rehab that set him back. He was named in Australia's T20 World Cup squad but withdrawn last week after failing to sufficiently recover.

SA name 13-Man squad for One-Day Cup return against NSW

South Australia has named a 13-man squad to face New South Wales as One-Day Cup action returns on Tuesday, February 10 at Cricket Central in Sydney.

The squad includes four changes from the group that last played in mid-November. Ashes hero Alex Carey returns to the one-day side, Hanno Jacobs and potential debutants Campbell Thompson, along with Jerrssis Wadia following his breakout season with the Adelaide Strikers, have all earned selection. Brendan Doggett is unavailable due to injury while Nathan McAndrew is being managed.

In South Australia’s most recent one-day outing, captain Nathan McSweeney led the charge with the bat, falling agonisingly short of his half-century after being dismissed on 49. Despite their efforts, South Australia were unable to defend their first-innings total, as Tasmania chased down the target with four wickets in hand.
