Epic Games lays off more than 1,000 employees as Fortnite engagement slows

Fortnite publisher Epic Games said Tuesday it is laying off 1,000 employees to save money as it grapples with industry-wide and company-specific challenges.

The Cary, North Carolina-based video game publisher said in a memo to employees that the job cuts are not related to artificial intelligence. Rather, they stem from industry-wide challenges such as slower growth, weaker spending and tougher cost economics. Games like Fortnite are also competing for people's attention against social media and other forms of online entertainment.

In addition, Epic said it's had its own company-specific hurdles, for example, it is "only in the early stages of returning to mobile" after court battles with Apple and Google over app store payments.

Epic Games lays off 1,000 workers as its CEO says the cuts aren't tied to AI

Epic Games, the video game maker behind Fortnite, is laying off more than 1,000 workers amid "extreme" market conditions and a downturn in engagement with its most popular game, CEO Tim Sweeney said in a blog post Tuesday.

Its successful online video game Fortnite, which Epic developed in 2017, is now facing competition from "other increasingly-engaging forms of entertainment," Sweeney said.

Fortnite, which is available on multiple platforms such as the Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation, offers a battle-royale format where players compete to be the last one standing. But weaker consumer spending and sluggish demand for new video game consoles have made the job cuts necessary, Sweeney said.

Australian software giant Atlassian has announced it is laying off about 10% of its workforce, or roughly 1,600 positions, as part of a restructuring plan to push into artificial intelligence and enterprise sales.

Shares of the company rose more than 4% in extended trading on the Nasdaq.

The company’s co-founder, Mike Cannon-Brookes, told employees the move was “the right decision for Atlassian” in a note circulated late Wednesday, US time.

“But that doesn’t mean it’s easy,” he said. “Far from it. I know this has a huge impact on each of you, and it weighs heavily on me and Atlassian today.”

Software giant Atlassian is cutting 10 per cent of its global workforce, or about 1600 employees, as the company led by billionaire chief executive Mike Cannon-Brookes is upended by AI turbulence.

Cannon-Brookes told staff on Thursday morning that AI was changing “the mix of skills we need” and “the number of roles required in certain areas” in the largest restructure in the company’s 23-year history.

A spokeswoman said about 30 per cent of the impacted employees are based in Australia, meaning about 500 local jobs will be axed. Atlassian employs about 16,000 workers globally with about 3500 of those in Australia.

Even a record-breaking launch can’t seem to save developers from layoffs. According to a report from IGN, the various teams behind Battlefield 6 have been hit with an unspecified number of layoffs; that includes staff at EA studios Criterion, Dice, Ripple Effect, and Motive, all of which contributed to the game.

It seems that barely a day goes by without news about mass layoffs in AI or gaming companies, and today the talk is about Electronic Arts. The Battlefield series publisher is axing an undetermined number of jobs across studios related to the franchise. The cuts affect key developer Dice as well as Criterion, Ripple Effect, and Motive.

IGN first reported the story, citing an EA spokesperson's noncommittal statement that "[EA] made select changes within our Battlefield organization to better align our teams around what matters most to our community." Some would say that's a hard pill for the affected staff to swallow, considering the latest Battlefield 6 had sold an estimated 20 million copies by late 2025.
