The True Story Behind 'Trust Me: The False Prophet'

Netflix’s Trust Me: The False Prophet is structured less as a conventional true crime retelling and more as a primary source reconstruction. The Assembly of Experts of Iran has settled on the son of the Ayatollah Ali Khamenei as its next supreme leader, his supporters claim, with the announcement delayed by a dispute over voting procedures.

If it is decided that the assembly does not have to meet in person to vote, its secretariat could simply declare that a consensus had been reached.

â€œThe name of Khamenei will continue,â€ said Hosseinali Eshkevari, a member of the council tasked with electing a new leader. â€œThe vote has been cast and will be announced soon.â€

Who is Mojtaba Khamenei, Iran's new supreme leader?

Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran's Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was killed in US-Israeli strikes, has been chosen as his successor.

Unlike his father, the 56-year-old has largely kept a low profile. He has never held government office, nor given public speeches or interviews, and only a limited number of photos and videos of him have ever been published.

But for years there have been rumours that he held considerable influence behind the scenes in Iran.

US diplomatic cables, which were published by WikiLeaks in the late 2000s, described him as "the power behind the robes" who was widely regarded as a "capable and forceful" figure within the regime, according to AP news agency.

US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson has died at the age of 84.

Mr Jackson, who died on Tuesday, local time, was a Baptist minister raised in the segregated South who became a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr and twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination.

He was the first Black man in the US to launch a nationwide presidential campaign.

"Our father was a servant leader — not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world," the Jackson family said in a statement.

Charismatic US civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, an eloquent Baptist minister raised in the segregated South who became a close associate of Martin Luther King Jr and twice ran for the Democratic presidential nomination, has died at age 84, his family said in a statement on Tuesday.

“Our father was a servant leader – not only to our family, but to the oppressed, the voiceless, and the overlooked around the world,” the Jackson family said.

Jackson, an inspirational orator and long-time Chicagoan, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2017.

Angus Taylor becomes Liberal leader

Angus Taylor is the leader of the federal Liberal Party after prevailing in a partyroom meeting in Canberra.

He replaces Sussan Ley, the first woman to hold the role, who was removed after just nine months.

Mr Taylor won by a comfortable margin with 34 votes to Ms Ley's 17, according to several Liberals present.

Jane Hume was chosen as deputy leader, the first senator to hold the role since 1990.

Four candidates nominated including incumbent Ted O'Brien, Dan Tehan and Melissa Price.

Ms Price was eliminated first with two votes, and then Mr Tehan in the second round with 11 votes.

Sussan Ley took this job with ambition and promise. But things soon unravelled

In the weeks after she was narrowly elected by her colleagues as the federal Liberal Party’s first female leader, Sussan Ley sounded full of the optimism that often comes with fresh starts.

She promised to be a new leader, with a new tone, new team and new agenda. She wanted to move her party to the so-called sensible centre. She would win back Australian women, young people, cities and multicultural communities. She was going to listen to her colleagues, and forge a cohesive and consultative party room process that catered to a range of views.

Those many promises made for a mighty assignment. Nine months later, they’re mostly unfulfilled.

Police boost security as Melbourne braces for Australia Day rally and counter-protest

Anti-immigration protesters and annual Invasion Day rally-goers are set to converge on Melbourne’s CBD on Monday, and police will don extra protective gear after protests in October turned violent.

The Invasion Day rally will start at 11am outside Parliament House. Previous such protests have moved through the CBD and ended up outside Flinders Street Station. The opposing March for Australia is to start outside Flinders Street Station at noon.

March for Australia rallies are typically anti-immigration, however Monday’s event appears to focus more on Australia Day and keeping the public holiday on January 26, directly opposing the Invasion Day rally’s push to mark the day on a different date.

Deputy Opposition Leader Sam Groth has announced his resignation from Victorian parliament and will not contest the November state election.

Groth, who was elected in 2022, announced his decision on Monday morning, saying he made the call after “some very personal reflection” and conversations with his family.

“The public pressure placed on my family in recent months has been significant and realising that some of it came from within my own party has been difficult to ignore,” Groth said.

The former professional tennis player issued a statement on Monday morning announcing his decision not to recontest the election. After a period of personal reflection and conversations with his wife, Brittany, over the summer break, he said he had informed the party’s leader, Jess Wilson, of his decision.

“The public pressure placed on my family in recent months has been significant and realising that some of it came from within my own party has been difficult to ignore,” Groth said. “Coming to that realisation has forced some very personal reflection.
