Demons star learns fate as tribunal rules on ‘rotten’ high shot

Melbourne forward Jacob van Rooyen’s three-game ban for a high shot on Port Adelaide defender Aliir Aliir was upheld at the AFL tribunal on Tuesday night.

Van Rooyen ended Aliir’s 200th AFL game early after his left forearm made brutal contact with the Port Adelaide backman’s head in a marking contest, briefly knocking him out.

The AFL’s match review officer slapped the 23-year-old with a striking charge that was deemed careless conduct, severe impact and high contact.

MELBOURNE forward Jacob van Rooyen will miss the next three games after his striking ban was upheld at the Tribunal on Tuesday.

The Demon's swinging arm collected Port Adelaide's Aliir Aliir in the head as he went to spoil a mark late in the second quarter of Melbourne's 76-point on Saturday night.

Aliir hit the ground and did not move for several seconds, before eventually being helped to his feet by trainers and walking from the field. However, he failed his subsequent HIA test and did not return to the field in his 200th game.

Dees star's ban upheld as AFL tribunal rejects biomechanist evidence bid

Jacob van Rooyen has failed in his bid to have a three-match suspension for striking Aliir Aliir overturned at the AFL tribunal.

Melbourne attempted to use evidence from a biomechanist in its bid to free van Rooyen, but was forbidden by the tribunal from doing so.

The suspension means Melbourne will need to win two finals matches to have van Rooyen play again this season.

Melbourne has suffered a major pre-finals blow, potentially losing key forward Jacob van Rooyen for the rest of the AFL season through suspension.

A conman who used Pablo Escobar's name and half-naked models to flog non-existent flamethrowers and gold phones has been jailed for four years.

Olof Kyros Gustafsson, 32, the Swedish boss of Escobar Inc, cashed in on cartel infamy by claiming his products were linked to the notorious drug lord.

Gustafsson did so by using sexualised social media ads featuring models holding weapons and gold bricks to lure fans of “narco” culture.

But US prosecutors said the flashy pitch was a scam. Investigators found the company’s headline gadget, the “Escobar Fold”, wasn’t a cut-price miracle phone at all.

Pies defender learns Tribunal fate for Mihocek tackle

Collingwood defender Billy Frampton faced the AFL Tribunal on Wednesday night

BILLY Frampton's rough conduct charge has been dismissed at the Tribunal on Wednesday night, with the Collingwood defender free to play in the Magpies' next match.

Frampton was facing a three-match ban for his King's Birthday tackle on Brody Mihocek that left the Melbourne forward with a fractured neck.

The AFL argued it was an "inherently dangerous" tackle in which a "reasonable player" would have released Mihocek given he was in a vulnerable position.

However, following a 90-minute hearing, the Tribunal sided with Frampton, saying his actions were not careless and that Mihocek's attempt to drive through the tackle had contributed to the "dreadful injury".

Frampton free to play despite tackle that left Mihocek with a fractured neck

Collingwood defender Billy Frampton is free to play, after the AFL tribunal found his tackle on Brody Mihocek that resulted in a fractured neck for the Demons forward was not considered unreasonable.

In Wednesday night’s hearing, the Magpie detailed his immediate concern for Mihocek, a 2023 premiership teammate, when he realised the Demon was injured.

“He said he needed help, [and] he couldn’t move, which was quite a distressing thing to hear,” Frampton said.

“He said that a few times straight away, which is why I reacted the way I did to call some people.”

Match review officer Michael Christian initially handed Frampton a three-match ban for the tackle that he graded careless and high, with severe impact. The incident left Mihocek with a neck injury that required surgery and almost certainly ended his season.

Addo-Carr learns his fate, MRC hand out fines and suspension

The MRC has handed down its latest round of charges following a Friday night dominated by controversy.

Despite debate over a try-saving tackle, Parramatta winger Josh Addo-Carr has been cleared of any wrongdoing in relation to his contact on Cowboys captain Tom Dearden.

Dearden suffered an ankle injury in the tackle, but Addo-Carr escaped any charge, with the MRC deeming the contact legal.

In the earlier Friday night fixture, Sydney Roosters forward Victor Radley has been charged with a Grade 2 careless high tackle for his hit on Titans fullback AJ Brimson.

Radley faces a one-match suspension with an early guilty plea, or two matches if he contests the charge and is unsuccessful at the judiciary.

One week after avoiding any charges over three separate incidents against Brisbane, Radley was on Saturday sanctioned for a shot on AJ Brimson.

The grade-two charge means Radley will miss the Roosters' Magic Round clash with North Queensland with an early guilty plea, or risk a second game out if he fights it.

I refer to the head-to-head “tackle” by Victor Radley on Pat Carrigan last Saturday. Radley, owner of a long and troubled past when it comes to dangerous tackles, launched himself like an Exocet missile at the Broncos skipper, head foremost. The top of Radley’s head connected flush with Carrigan’s jaw, and he went down like a sack of spuds.

Watching the slo-mo replay, Fox Sports commentator Warren Smith was struck dumb: “Here’s the tackle here, Victor Radley on Pat Carrigan … well that’s … that’s … well, it’s irrelevant now.”

He said that because – unbelievably – Radley had only been put on report for his trouble. But surely, having had a look at it, the bunker would step in? Nuh. As you were. Carry on camping. And so they did. The NRL Match Review Committee, then, the body that assesses on-field incidents after games and decides whether players should be charged or referred to the judiciary?
