Ben King set to leave the Suns for Hawks in a stunning about-face

Ben King is poised to complete one of the most dramatic contract backflips in recent AFL history, with the Gold Coast spearhead set to reject the Suns’ lucrative long-term offer and instead nominate Hawthorn as his preferred destination for 2027.

The stunning change of heart comes barely two months after King told The Age he intended to remain on the Gold Coast, insisting he loved the club and saw his future in Queensland.

But three industry sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity because discussions remain confidential, have confirmed King’s position has shifted significantly in recent weeks, with Hawthorn now firmly in the box seat to secure one of the competition’s premier key forwards.

Nine things we learned: This inspirational Bomber should be captain in 2027

Adelaide's forward mix will be a fascinating watch, the Power may have unveiled a new midfield option plus more lessons from round 19

IN THIS week's Things We Learned, we discover a forgotten Cat's return is just what Geelong needs, a young Eagle continues to impress plus much, much more.

Hawthorn has been flagged as a potential destination for Gold Coast spearhead Ben King if he decides to leave the Suns, but does the move actually make sense for the Hawks? Tall forward Mitch Lewis put together one of his best games for the club against Richmond, dominating in the front half with five first half goals in what was a scintillating display. Lewis has formed a dangerous three-pronged attack with veteran Jack Gunston and the exciting Mabior Chol this year, while youngsters Calsher Dear and Aidan Schubert are also waiting in the wings for an opportunity. So, will targeting King upset the apple cart if it means Lewis explores his options as an unrestricted free agent? Or does Sam Mitchell think King could be the long-term replacement for Gunston? On one hand, adding a player who is currently second in the race for the Coleman Medal would be a huge boost, but perhaps Lewis, a player who's already entrenched in the system and is putting together one of his best injury-free seasons, might also be a reasonable option. Only time will tell, but the King-Lewis storyline looms as a fascinating watch throughout the rest of the season as Hawthorn gears up for another September campaign and busy trade period. – Dylan Bolch

‘Do I need to get involved?’ Hawks coach addresses star’s future as great fires trade warning

Hawthorn legend Jordan Lewis has cautioned his former club that signing Ben King could disrupt culture as the Hawks also look to lock away Mitch Lewis.

Lewis is coming off a season-best five goal performance against Richmond to take his season tally to 30 majors from a career-best 18 games after a wretched run of injury since being drafted in 2016.

There’s been talk that if the Hawks do in fact land Suns free agent King on a lucrative deal, that could cause Lewis to depart Hawthorn.

Seven’s owner announces massive job cuts as TV earnings drop

Southern Cross Media, the business created from the merger of Kerry Stokes’ Seven West and radio group Southern Cross, announced a profit downgrade and massive job cuts as market conditions continue to deteriorate.

Southern Cross said its businesses “are performing well in market conditions that have deteriorated materially more than anticipated” through the current quarter, with revenue and earnings both expected to be below previous forecasts.

“There is strong momentum in audience and revenue share and every one of our businesses is outperforming in their markets. But we need to be honest with ourselves that those markets are under immense pressure,” Southern Cross chief executive Rohan Lund told staff.

Stars axed in brutal cuts at Seven

A Channel 7 reporter has taken to social media to reveal she has been made redundant while on maternity leave.

Melbourne-based reporter Bethan Yeoman is one of up to 300 full-time staffers axed by Southern Cross Media Group, owners of the Seven Network, The West Australian and Southern Cross Austereo.

“Being made redundant on mat leave was not on my 2026 bingo card … but all the greatest things that have happened in my career have come after set backs – so I know the best is yet to come,” the new mother posted to her Instagram account on Friday.

“It’s the people who make this job so special … and I’m just so grateful for all the amazing journos and cameramen I’ve worked so closely with over the years.

Ibrahima Konaté poised to leave Liverpool after failing to agree new contract

Ibrahima Konaté looks set to leave Liverpool after failing to agree a contract extension. The 27-year-old’s representatives have been in extensive talks with the club about extending his five-year stay at Anfield but it now looks certain that the France defender will leave for free.

If Konaté walks away from Liverpool out of contract, it will be the second consecutive year – after Trent Alexander-Arnold ran down his deal before a £10m move to Real Madrid – that the club will have lost one of their first-choice defenders without receiving a significant fee.

Konaté has had a disappointing season but losing an established centre-back will come as a blow for the sporting director, Richard Hughes, with the new defensive recruits Jérémy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni both working their way back to fitness after significant injuries and transfer speculation swirling over the future of Joe Gomez.

French international Ibrahima Konate looks set to leave Liverpool after failing to agree a new contract extension with the Premier League club.

The 27-year-old defender, who joined Liverpool in 2021, will reportedly join Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson in farewelling the club this season, with Paris Saint-Germain his most likely next destination. He’s also previously been linked with Real Madrid, while Chelsea also looms as an option.

John Stones to leave Manchester City at end of season after 10-year spell

John Stones is to leave Manchester City at the end of the season after a decade at the club. City confirmed the news on Tuesday, with the 31-year-old departing the Etihad Stadium at the end of his contract.

Stones was one of Pep Guardiola’s first signings in 2016 and has made nearly 300 appearances for City, helping the club win 19 major trophies, including six Premier League titles and the 2023 Champions League.

The England defender has been restricted by injuries to only 16 appearances for the club this season and is the second long-serving player to announce his impending departure after Bernardo Silva.

Authors including Stella Prize winner Evelyn Araluen have cut ties with publisher University of Queensland Press (UQP) after it scrapped publication of an Indigenous author's picture book.

All 5,000 already-printed copies of the unreleased book, Bila, a river cycle, by award-winning Wiradjuri poet Jazz Money and illustrated by Matt Chun, are set to be destroyed, after past comments by Chun were found to have breached the university's policy on anti-Semitism.

An Australian publishing house has cancelled the publication of a children’s book by an award-winning Indigenous poet over comments the book’s illustrator made about the victims of the Bondi beach terror attack, whom he called “affluent beneficiaries of imperialism”.

University of Queensland said on Wednesday its publishing house would not proceed with the publication of Bila, A River Cycle, written by Jazz Money and illustrated by Matt Chun, and was considering “recycling options” for already printed copies.

Artemis II astronauts prepare to leave Earth’s orbit and head towards the moon

Nasa mission enters second day, with crew hoping to become first people to orbit moon in more than 50 years

Nasa has given the four Artemis astronauts circling Earth the green light to head for the moon and carry out the first crewed lunar flyby in more than 50 years.

Nasa flight director Jeff Radigan told the astronauts the mission management team had approved firing up the engine of their Orion capsule to send the spacecraft on a trajectory towards the moon.

The 5min 49sec burn is scheduled to take place just before 1am BST and send the astronauts out of Earth orbit to begin the three-day voyage toward the moon, the first since 1972.

Sit back and let us take you on a journey to the Moon with Artemis II

On launch pad 39B at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, billions of dollars' worth of rocket sits on the tarmac, ready to take off.

More than 50 years after our last visit, this is humankind's next moonshot. If all goes well for NASA's Artemis II mission, the astronauts on board could fly the furthest that humans have ever gone.

So how does the next generation's journey to the Moon compare to other famous space flights, and what should we be looking out for?

In the hours leading up to the launch, four astronauts are strapped into the crew module of the Orion spacecraft. You can think of this as the heart.

Breaking: Floodwaters leave Alice Springs residents stranded

River levels rose dramatically overnight due to a thunderstorm in Alice Springs. (ABC News: Victoria Ellis)

Northern Territory emergency services are working to rescue multiple people isolated by flooding, including a woman clinging to a tree in the middle of a river.

Last night dangerous thunderstorms caused river levels to rise dramatically in the central Australian town, cutting off several roads and all low-level causeways.

Emergency services issued an emergency warning, the highest level of risk, early this morning, urging people to seek shelter.

People are being asked not to travel as the gauge at Anzac Oval was at 3.5 metres and slowly receding.

Pakistan's Babar to miss Sixers' sudden-death BBL final

Sixers opener recalled immediately by his country ahead of T20 series against Australia

Pakistan star Babar Azam will miss Friday's do-or-die KFC BBL|15 Challenger final for the Sydney Sixers after being recalled by his country immediately ahead of their series against Australia next week.

It means Babar will be absent for the rest of the Sixers' finals campaign should they beat Hobart at the SCG to set up a rematch with the Scorchers in Sunday's BBL Final in Perth.

Pakistan are yet to announce their squad for next month's T20 World Cup but face the Aussies in three 20-over internationals in Lahore from next Friday as a precursor to the global tournament.

Former Australian batter Mark Waugh called for the Sixers to show some “tough love” and drop Pakistan champion Babar Azam for Friday’s must-win Challenger against the Hobart Hurricanes at the SCG.

But the Sydney side won’t have to make that call, with the BBL revealing Azam will return to Pakistan to “commence preparations for upcoming international matches”.
