Daniel Farke On Why He Will Field A Full Strength Team Against West Ham: Is He Gambling With Leeds United Survival?

Daniel Farke, the 49-year-old German manager of Leeds United, has made his intentions clear ahead of Sunday’s FA Cup quarter-final against West Ham United at the London Stadium. Speaking at a press conference, Farke confirmed he intends to select a strong starting eleven. He argued that since the next Premier League fixture doesn’t arrive for another eight days, there is no logical reason to rest key players.

He stressed that footballers need rhythm and sharpness. Leaving them idle ahead of a cup tie of this magnitude simply does not serve the team. He acknowledged that he would protect anyone carrying a physical risk, but beyond that precaution, his message was firm that Leeds United would go to East London to compete at full strength.

Norwich are looking to reach the FA Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 2020 when they were taken to the last eight by current Leeds boss Daniel Farke. Can they seal their involvement in Monday's draw at the expense of their former manager?

Leeds vs Norwich and more: FA Cup fifth round talking points

Sky Sports' journalists take a look at the talking points in the FA Cup fifth round: Leeds vs Norwich and West Ham vs Brentford still to play

Leeds have only lost two of their last 15 meetings with Norwich, and both of those came when Daniel Farke, who now occupies the home dugout at Elland Road, was in charge of Sunday's visitors.

Farke, of course, still holds a special place in the hearts of Canaries fans for the joy of two promotion-winning campaigns between 2019-2021.

Philippe Clement is a man on his own mission, though. Norwich were relegation-bound before the Belgian arrived, keen to prove his credentials in the English leagues after taking a stab at Scotland and falling foul of Celtic's unrelenting dominance. Overseeing Rangers' first home loss to St Mirren since 1991 in his final act in charge wasn't exactly the highlight of his tumultuous tenure at Ibrox.

FA Cup: Norwich City seek upset against ex-boss Daniel Farke's Leeds

Norwich have not won any of their six games against Leeds since the Yorkshire club appointed their former boss in 2023

Winning one promotion to the Premier League would probably have been enough to establish Daniel Farke's place among the most respected managers in Norwich City history.

To do it twice – and in the space of only three seasons – means he will be forever regarded with affection by the club's fanbase, no matter that he was unable to establish them in the top flight.

Now, it is the task of the current Canaries squad to try to beat Farke's Leeds United side at Elland Road and earn a place in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since the German guided them to that stage in 2019-20.

Leeds vs Man City: Jayden Bogle and Gabriel Gudmundsson explain transformation under Daniel Farke since Etihad defeat

Leeds United's flying wing-backs Gabriel Gudmundsson and Jayden Bogle sit down with Sky Sports to explain how Daniel Farke's change of formation at Man City has transformed the team's fortunes in the Premier League ahead of facing Pep Guardiola's side on Saturday – live on Sky Sports

Everything changed for Leeds United and Daniel Farke during half-time at Manchester City on November 29.

The promoted side, who began that weekend in the relegation zone, were 2-0 down at the Etihad and their first season back in the Premier League appeared to be heading in only one direction.

However, the game turned after the restart with Farke's change of formation to 3-5-2. Leeds may have fallen just short on the day – losing 3-2 – but that proved to be the turning point for their season.

Sky have also just flashed up an intriguing stat that we may as well nick bears repeating. As mentioned in the preamble, during half time of the corresponding fixture in Manchester last November, Daniel Farke switched things around, changing to a back three, and nearly pulled off a great comeback …

… and while the tinkering didn’t bear fruit that day, it’s now seen as a pivotal point in Leeds’ efforts to beat the drop. Since then – and here’s the killer stat – only seven teams have picked up more points than Leeds: Arsenal, City, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Chelsea and Brentford. That is not bad going, and Farke’s seat is a lot less hot, his coat-peg less shoogly, as a result.

Leeds vs Arsenal: Kai Havertz starts first PL game in a year, captain Martin Ødegaard dropped

Mikel Arteta has said that Bukayo Saka "wasn't comfortable" to start Arsenal's 4-0 thrashing of Leeds United, prompting him to be replaced by Noni Madueke in the starting XI.

Madueke went on to play a starring role in the win, with his cross headed in for Martín Zubimendi for Arsenal's opener, before his corner was punched by Leeds goalkeeper Karl Darlow into his own net to make it two.

"In the warm-up he had a little niggle, he wasn't comfortable to start the game, so immediately we made a decision to make that change and bring Noni in," Arteta said after the game.

'A great headache' – can Madueke stake claim for Arsenal and England?

Noni Madueke played a big part in Arsenal's first two goals against Leeds

The sight of Noni Madueke flying past defenders and putting dangerous crosses into the penalty area will have been a welcome sight for Mikel Arteta.

And Madueke's performance in Arsenal's 4-0 hammering of Leeds will have been even more well received, given that he was drafted into the starting line-up minutes before kick-off after Bukayo Saka picked up a hip injury in the warm-up.

The 23-year-old created Martin Zubimendi's opener, before seeing his corner punched into the Leeds net by goalkeeper Karl Darlow for the Gunners' second, as Arteta's men moved seven points clear at the Premier League summit.

After seeing us thrash Leeds United 4-0, a happy Mikel Arteta took question from the media in the Elland Road press room.

on the victory:Very, very happy obviously. A very impressive performance, a very impressive result and in the context that we've done it. When you have the difficulty of the game and the opponent that we're facing, with their recent form and the style of play that they have at the moment and the energy that the stadium brings, then the fact that after three results that didn't go our way in the league, we really wanted to show how much we wanted it, and I think we've certainly done that today.on Saka’s injury:In the warm-up, he had a little niggle, he wasn't comfortable starting the game, so immediately we made a decision to make that change and bring Noni in. And he was ready, because you cannot do that in two minutes. The way he prepared, the way he's waiting for opportunity, I think it paid off today because he really impacted the team.on Madueke and Martinelli stepping up:That's only possible if those players are with the right mindset. We talked before the game that it's going to be a long game, we're going to have to navigate through different moments. We're going to need everybody fulfilling their role that they have on the day, and I think the players executed that incredibly well.

There's a card angle here that feels like it's slipped through the pricing cracks. This London derby has plenty of needle baked into it anyway, but one specific match-up jumps off the page: Marc Cucurella vs Jarrod Bowen.

Bowen is one of the most effective foul-winners in the Premier League when isolated one-on-one. He draws contact cleverly, carries the ball aggressively and forces defenders into recovery challenges. The data backs it up. Bowen has already drawn 10 cards from opponents this season, more than any other player in the league.

Arsenal stroll back to winning ways against outclassed Leeds and go seven points clear

It would be a touch too hyperbolic to suggest this was a season-defining afternoon for Arsenal’s title ambitions, but given the opposition and the pre-match drama surrounding this game, there was no doubting that come full time this felt like a significant afternoon in the Premier League title picture.

Two points from three games is hardly compelling enough evidence to prompt full-blown crisis talks, but given the lofty standards Arsenal have set in the first half of this season, it felt as though we would learn plenty about them here . This against a team who have lost once since the start of December and with a ferocious home crowd behind them.

Fulham can keep their place in the top half of the Premier League table today with a positive result at Leeds, themselves in good form despite a setback at Newcastle last week.

Daniel Farke’s side responded to the loss on Tyneside by coming from behind to beat Championship side Derby at Pride Park in the third round of the FA Cup last week. It means they have now suffered just one defeat in their last nine matches across all competitions.

Silva unsurprised by Calvert-Lewin's form ahead of reunion with Leeds striker

Fulham boss Marco Silva is unsurprised by Dominic Calvert-Lewin's resurgence in front of goal as he prepares to be reunited with the Leeds United striker on Saturday.

Calvert-Lewin's purple patch in front of goal has helped steer Leeds eight points clear of the relegation zone, with the striker scoring nine goals in 19 Premier League outings.

Indeed, his total is only bettered by Antoine Semenyo (10), Igor Thiago (16) and Erling Haaland (20), but his potential was something Silva saw first-hand earlier in his managerial career.

During his time at Everton, Calvert-Lewin appeared 54 times in all competitions under Silva, netting 13 goals, with only Gylfi Sigurdsson (16) and Richarlison (21) scoring more for the Toffees in that time.

Brentford v Tottenham and Sunderland v Man City follow at 20:00 GMT

Four wins on the bounce and seven games unbeaten in all competitions has steadied the ship at Anfield. Their three consecutive league wins has earned the Reds more points than the eight they managed across their previous 10 top-flight matches.

The shoots of recovery are there but they remain a long way from their best and were far from convincing in their 2-1 win against rock-bottom Wolves. Their failings from set pieces were again laid bare with Santiago Bueno's goal coming from a corner.

No top-flight side has conceded more goals from set pieces (excluding penalties) than Liverpool's 12 this season, while only West Ham (11) have let in more from corners than the Reds' seven.

“I always think of these opponents for the Tony Yeboah goal,” emails Andy O’Shaughnessy. “I had started a job in Bristol and wandered into one packed pub – when Tony scored. Thirty years later it’s still iconic.”

Oh, yes. One of the great Premier League goals. It’s the sound of it that still gives me the goosebumps. I reckon you could close your eyes, listen to the above clip, and still figure out what goal is was: the ball thudding off Yeboah’s laces, crashing off the underside of the crossbar to send the Elland Road crowd wild.

Liverpool vs. Leeds: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Liverpool kick off 2026 by welcoming Leeds United to Anfield in the Premier League on Thursday.

The Reds ended last year on a high as they extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and winning streak to four with victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Like several of the triumphs that have come in recent weeks, it wasn’t entirely convincing for Arne Slot’s side against the Premier League’s bottom club.

Liverpool’s defensive deficiencies are still on show and were alarmingly evident during the reverse fixture with Leeds back in early December. Two leads were surrendered in a chaotic 3–3 draw, with Ao Tanaka’s stoppage-time strike from a corner also exposing Liverpool’s vulnerabilities at set pieces.
