Motorcyclist remembered as 'absolute legend' after Western Highway crash

Peter Mason has been remembered as an "absolute legend" by his friends.  (Supplied: Facebook)

A motorcyclist died at the weekend after reportedly hitting a pothole on the Western Highway.

A friend has paid tribute to 71-year-old Peter "Tiki" Mason, calling him an "absolute legend".

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash but the Western Highway Action Committee says the state government needs to fix the highway, calling the lack of investment in it "reprehensible".

A friend of the Ballarat motorcyclist who died in a crash on the Western Highway at the weekend says the Victorian government has "blood on its hands".

Pothole death drives home reality of voter fury at government neglect

Peter “Tiki” Mason went out on the weekend for one of his favourite activities: motorcycling with a friend. They were riding along Victoria’s Western Highway near Ballarat, which is littered with potholes, when Mason hit one, lost control of his bike and instantly died.

The death of the Eureka Social Riders club member, 71, has brought into sharp focus the deterioration of the state’s roads and why it has become a lightning rod of voter anger as Victorians head to an election on November 28.

Magpies legend to retire at the end of the season

Pies great Steele Sidebottom will retire at the end of the season

The 35-year-old informed his teammates on Thursday that he will retire at the end of the season.

Sidebottom has played 373 games and kicked 213 goals in a stellar career for the Magpies, and won premierships in 2010 and 2023.

"On behalf of everyone at Collingwood, we want to congratulate Steele on everything he has achieved throughout his career but also to thank him for all he has given the club," coach Craig McRae said.

"Steele's football speaks for itself. His consistency, professionalism and ability to perform under pressure have been remarkable throughout his career. But for me, his greatest strength is his character. He's authentic, caring, humble and has a wonderful way of bringing people together. That's why he's so respected by everyone at our club.

‘Authentic, caring, humble’: McRae leads tributes as Collingwood hero Sidebottom confirms exit

Dual Collingwood premiership player Steele Sidebottom’s brilliant career will finish at the end of the Magpies’ 2026 season.

The 35-year-old won two club best-and-fairest awards, was named All-Australian in 2018 and was runner-up in that year’s Brownlow Medal. He played a key role in the Magpies’ 2010 and 2023 premierships, and won the Gary Ayres Medal for best player in the finals series in 2018 despite a quiet game in the losing grand final.

His goal from outside 50 metres in the final five minutes of the 2023 grand final is an iconic moment in Collingwood history as it virtually sealed victory for the Magpies when the goal put them 10 points in front.

Sam Neill Filmed ‘Legend Of Zelda’ Role Prior To Death; Dichen Lachman & Yvonne Strahovski Also Set – The Dish

EXCLUSIVE: Earlier today, news broke that Australia’s Uli Latukefu had landed the villain role of Ganondorf in The Legend of Zelda, Nintendo and Sony‘s live-action feature film based on the popular video game. And now, sources tell us that the late Sam Neill also will appear in the film.

Reps for Sony couldn’t be reached for comment, nor could Neill’s former reps. The project, which wrapped in April, will mark one of Neill’s final screen performances, if not the last. It’s not yet clear who he plays. Neill died July 13 at 78.Other new additions to the Zelda movie include Severance‘s Dichen Lachman and The Handmaid’s Tale‘s Yvonne Strahovski.

The Legend Of Zelda movie just locked in its lead villain — and confirmed poignant new castings

They say that any movie is only as good as its villain — and by that metric, it looks like Wes Ball is gunning for an all-timer with his upcoming live-action The Legend Of Zelda movie. Just over a year after the Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes filmmaker's cinematic trip to Hyrule cast youngsters Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as its Zelda and Link, and a good nine months on from our first official look at Nintendo and Sony's fantasy epic, Deadline is reporting that Australian actor Uli Latukefu has landed the role of iconic villain Ganondorf in Ball's film. And that may not quite be the whole story either…

The football world has been plunged into mourning following the passing of Milan and Italy legend Baresi at the age of 66. The iconic centre-back is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in the history of the sport. Baresi spent his entire professional career with the Rossoneri, establishing himself as a symbol of the club's dominance. His death has prompted an immediate outpouring of grief from former team-mates, rival clubs, and football governing bodies.

Football mourning the loss of Italy legend Franco Baresi

"The entire history of AC Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi. His example and integrity will be forever etched into the Club's DNA, just as his iconic number 6 shirt is," the club said on social media website X.

Last year Baresi's former club, where he served as honorary vice president, said he had undergone surgery to remove a pulmonary nodule, and had been prescribed recovery treatment by a cancer specialist.

In February, Baresi was one of the torchbearers for the Olympic flame at the opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina Winter Games, appearing alongside former Inter Milan and Italy defender Giuseppe Bergomi, his longtime rival on the pitch.

Aussie legend left ‘in tears’ by star’s ‘all-time’ swim

That wraps up our LIVE coverage of the first full day of competition in Glasgow.

Australia are on top of the medal tally after a dominant day in the pool.

We’ll be back when action resumes tonight. Join us then!

Hani Watson clinched bronze in the women’s para powerlifting, and then delivered a heart-warming message back to Australia.

Watson was lucky to have even made it to Glasgow, having undergone six surgeries in the past 12 months.

“You know, just don’t give up your dreams. Disabilities or not, chronic pain or not, just keep going, keep giving anything a go,” she said on Seven’s coverage.

There is a two-minute countdown clock when para powerlifters enter the arena.

In that time they have to settle on the bench, most get their legs strapped down, align their back and shoulders under the bar, get their grip perfect, then lift.

Eventually, the pump-up music fades out when the lifter is finally ready, usually about halfway through the time.

For the first 30-40 seconds of her time on the bench, Watson, an effusive and effervescent athlete who loves a chat, takes a moment of supreme stillness.

Hani Watson is in ‘24/7, bone-cracking pain’. She won bronze anyway

Glasgow: Para powerlifter Hani Watson is familiar with pain. So much so, she’s given it a nickname.

“I call it Nigel and Nigel is always there,” she laughed.

The para athlete was born with bilateral metaphyseal dysplasia, which bowed her tibia and femur bones and means she has to live with “24/7 bone cracking pain”. In the past year, Watson has had multiple surgeries on her legs to help deal with it.

But on Friday evening in Glasgow, Watson, a bronze medallist at Birmingham in 2022, banished “Nigel” to secure bronze again with a 147-kilogram lift in front of a roaring crowd at the SEC Armadillo.

Nintendo to remake classic ‘Zelda’ game ‘Ocarina of Time’

PARIS: Japanese games giant Nintendo on Tuesday announced a new version of beloved 1998 action-adventure classic “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” for its latest Switch 2 console.

The company provided few details about the “Ocarina of Time” remake on a livestream presenting upcoming titles, saying only that the game will arrive this year, the 40th anniversary of the series.

Its original version on the Nintendo 64 console was a 1990s landmark, with an immersive, detailed 3D world and a combat system that allowed players to “lock on” to individual enemies — today an industry standard.

Players controlled green-clad protagonist Link in a time-hopping adventure that straddled both his childhood and adulthood, as he confronted dark lord Ganondorf to save Princess Zelda.

‘Old timers’: Legend’s whack back at AFL stars after cheeky dig

Hawthorn champion Jason Dunstall has taken a dig back at a pair of Brownlow Medallists after they were part of a conversation that took a cheeky jab at him during the week.

It all started with Carlton captain Patrick Cripps kicking the winning goal for his team against Geelong last Friday night, after taking a big mark 25m out directly in front of goal.

Instead of kicking a drop punt, Cripps snapped the ball around the corner to put the Blues in front.

A few days later, he explained his reasoning for not going for a traditional set shot with the game on the line.

Why it’s more important than ever to win the centre square clearance

Australian rules starts with a clash unlike any other sport. The centre ball-up is a four-on-four cage fight for possession, space and territory.

Inside a 50 x 50-metre square momentarily separating other combatants from the action, eight players rely on strength, positioning, pace, skill, will and luck to win the ball and send it their team’s way.

One battle occurs in the air when opposing rucks leap into each other. The other takes place at ground level as players scrap to control space and win the ball using a mixture of art, science and skill to prevail.

With four hitting zones, not every part of “the pie” can be covered. Risk assessments are made and gambles taken in both planning and real time. It’s team v team, four v four, and one v one played out in a matter of seconds. There is nowhere for the combatants to hide.
