Construction worker confronted by men linked to bikie gang, CFMEU inquiry hears

Three Melbourne men linked to the Comancheros bikie gang flew to Brisbane before one allegedly threatened a construction worker at a major government project, a commission of inquiry has heard.

Flight and phone records tendered to the probe into the CFMEU and construction sector revealed Bemir Saracevic, Krstomir Bjelogrlic and Mark Ahern arrived in Brisbane at around 11.20am on June 5, 2024.

Senior Counsel Assisting Eddy Gisonda KC told the inquiry the trio travelled to the Centenary Bridge upgrade site, where a crane operator said he was confronted around 12.30pm.

CFMEU boss threatened police with legal action before blockade call

Former Queensland CFMEU leader Michael Ravbar wrote a legal threat to the state’s police commissioner about officers’ response to a workplace entry incident just days before the union was allowed to block a delivery to a major south-east road project.

Queensland’s inquiry into the CFMEU and construction sector has returned for another three-day hearing week, this time probing the Centenary Bridge upgrade and the state’s so-called best practice industry conditions policy dubbed the “CFMEU tax”.

Opening proceedings on Tuesday morning, counsel assisting the inquiry Eddy Gisonda KC tendered a letter from since-ousted Ravbar to then police commissioner Steve Gollschewski in early May 2024, accusing officers of unlawful or inappropriate conduct.

TGA issues new warning after finding link between GLP-1 medicines Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro to eye disorder

Australia’s medicine regulator has issued a safety warning over popular weight-loss drugs like Ozempic, saying they could cause a rare vision disorder.

The Therapeutic Goods Administration warned the GLP-1 RA class of medicines have the potential to cause a rare, but severe, form of eye disorder called non-arteritic anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy (NAION).

The disorder may result in permanent visual impairment, including blindness. There is currently no treatment for it.

The TGA urges any patients who experience sudden vision loss, even if only partial, should seek urgent medical attention.

The regulator revealed a potential link between GLP-1 RAs and NAION was first discovered in July 2024 following a JAMA Ophthalmology study.

Modelling scout linked to Epstein found dead in Paris

A modelling scout linked to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has been found dead at his home.

Daniel Siad, 69, was discovered on Monday in Colombes, a north-west suburb of Paris, the Nanterre prosecutor's office confirmed to the BBC.

An investigation to determine the cause of death was opened on Monday evening, the office said, adding that a post-mortem examination would be carried out.

Siad's name appeared thousands of times in the Epstein files released by the US government. He denied knowing of the threat Epstein had posed.

His lawyer stressed that Siad, who had been the subject of several complaints in France including allegations of rape, had "never been prosecuted".

French modelling scout Daniel Siad, 69, who was under investigation over alleged links to Jeffrey Epstein, has been found dead at his home outside Paris.

Mr Siad denied allegations of rape and human trafficking, and had not yet been questioned by investigators before his death.

His death has prompted frustration from alleged victims who say it may deprive them of answers and justice over Epstein's network.

Trade talk: Victorian powerhouse linked to gettable Cats star

Geelong’s Gryan Miers is seen as gettable by rival clubs this off-season, according to SEN’s Tom Morris.

Miers suffered a partial tear of his ACL earlier this year, and while he was forced to miss four weeks of footy with the injury, he returned to the senior side in Round 10 before being managed after the loss to Adelaide in Round 13.

He’s since played three VFL games, racking up 27 disposals a game in those fixtures, but has failed to break back into the Cats’ senior side.

With Miers clearly wanting to play top-level footy, Morris says rival clubs think he ‘is on the move at the end of the year’, and while Geelong won’t shop him around, he believes the club is open to a trade despite the classy ball-user being contracted until the end of the 2028 season.

Broncos premiership winner linked to Perth Bears after seeking early release from new team

The Perth Bears are reportedly eyeing Tyson Smoothy after the Broncos premiership winner asked new club Wakefield Trinity for an early release from his contract. Smoothy helped Brisbane win the NRL premiership in 2025 before signing a three-year deal with Wakefield in the English Super League.

However the 26-year-old is keen to return to Australia for family reasons and has asked Wakefield to release him from the second and third years of his contract (2027 and 2028). The Daily Telegraph is now reporting that Mal Meninga’s Perth Bears are keen to snap him up if he gets his release.

It’s unlikely that Brisbane would have an appetite to bring Smoothy back considering they’ve already res-signed Cory Paix and have young guns Blake Mozer and Cameron Bukowski waiting in the wings. A valuable utility man, Smoothy can play hooker and back-row and played a ‘Mr Fix-It’ role for Brisbane on their march to the premiership last year.

Powell unsure if Smoothy will stay at Wakefield

Tyson Smoothy signed a deal until 2028 when he joined Wakefield last year

Wakefield Trinity coach Daryl Powell admits he is unsure if Australian hooker Tyson Smoothy will remain at the club beyond the end of this season.

Smoothy, 26, joined Wakefield in 2025 from NRL side Brisbane Broncos, signing a three-year deal until 2028, but it is being reported he wants to return to Australia.

Powell was reluctant to go into detail over Smoothy's circumstances, but could not say if he would still be at the club next season.

"He had some family stuff for our last game with his little one, and I won't expand on that," Powell told BBC Radio Leeds.

Former NRL utility keen on a return to Australia

At the beginning of 2025 Tyson Smoothy announced he would be joining Wakefield Trinity on a three-year deal, considered a massive steal by the Super League outfit.

Following the announcement, Smoothy went on to have a breakout season in which he won a premiership with the Brisbane Broncos.

The form has continued at Wakefield too, but the 26-year-old reportedly has no desire to see out the remainder of his contract.

According to Love Rugby League, Smoothy's family is keen to return to Australia, and the hooker has approached the club about an early release.

It has also been reported Wakefield have no desire to let him go mid-season, but are not against severing ties at the season's end.
