Hugo Ekitike: Liverpool striker's injury 'looks really bad', says Arne Slot

Liverpool boss Arne Slot says Hugo Ekitike's injury "looks really bad" after the France striker was taken off on a stretcher during Tuesday's Champions League loss to Paris St-Germain.

Ekitike went down off the ball 30 minutes into the quarter-final second leg, which the Reds lost 2-0 on the night and 4-0 on aggregate.

He was seen holding his ankle and was visibly in discomfort before being taken off the pitch.

"Hugo looks really bad but it is difficult to say how bad," Slot said after the game.

"Let's see. It doesn't look good, that is clear. I didn't see him at half-time and after the game he was already home. I have not spoken to him yet."

Hugo Ekitike has handed a major injury worry to Liverpool and France after he was forced off in the first half of his club's Champions League quarterfinal loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.

The France striker appeared to hurt his right ankle when he slipped in the 27th minute of the second-leg match at Anfield.

"It doesn't look good," Liverpool coach Arne Slot said after the 2-0 defeat, which sealed a 4-0 aggregate victory for PSG. "It looks really bad, but it's difficult for me to say how bad. Tomorrow we will investigate further."

In the first half, Nuno Mendes was forced off with a problem and was subsequently replaced by Lucas Hernåndez.

Early in the second half, DÊsirÊ DouÊ was next to succumb to injury after a collision with Dominik Szoboszlai and he was eventually replaced by fellow Frenchman Bradley Barcola.

There will be concern among those watching on in France as Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike was also stretchered off in the first half with what appeared to be an achilles injury.

Liverpool's best Champions League comebacks: Results to give Arne Slot's team hope against PSG

Liverpool have enjoyed some memorable and historic occasions in European competition.

The Reds have won 20 top-flight titles throughout their illustrious history and been crowned champions of Europe six times as well.

With the hunt for yet more silverware continuing, Arne Slot doesn't have to look far for inspiration as he targets yet another come-from-behind spectacular on the European stage.

Liverpool trail Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 on aggregate after a first-leg defeat in the French capital, where they were well beaten on the day by the Champions League holders. Yet Anfield has a history of reversing their fortunes on such occasions as this.

Ex-Liverpool star reminisces over 'living every boy's dream' in message to Reds fans

Dejan Lovren sent a message to his former club ahead of the second leg against PSG

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren reminisced about his memorable decisive goal against Borussia Dortmund a decade ago, as the Reds prepare to attempt another remarkable European comeback at Anfield.

Lovren spent six years at Liverpool between 2014 and 2020, but the most famous moment of his Liverpool career came during his second season at the club.

Liverpool trailed to Dortmund 4-2 on aggregate with just 25 minutes of the Europa League quarter-final second leg remaining, but goals from Philippe Coutinho and Mamadou Sakho leveled proceedings.

The tie took place while the away goals rule was still in place in Europe, so Dortmund would still have progressed had the tie ended 4-4 on aggregate, having scored three times at Anfield.

Liverpool have perfect inspiration for PSG comeback 10 years ago to the day at Anfield

Liverpool need to produce some Anfield magic tonight if they are to get past PSG in the Champions League, essentially repeating a trick from ten years ago.

Paris Saint-Germain arrive on Merseyside as the reigning European champions and with a 2-0 lead from the first leg, after goals from DĂŠsirĂŠ DouĂŠ and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia put them in control in Paris last week. With Liverpool out of the FA Cup and their title defence long gone, this tie feels like the only route to salvaging something from the season.

To do that, Liverpool need to tap back into one of Anfield’s great European nights. Ten years ago to the day, Jurgen Klopp’s side came from the brink against Borussia Dortmund in a wild 4-3 win that remains one of the stadium’s defining modern comebacks.

Richard Hughes ‘on the phone’ to land 10-goal Prem winger for Liverpool

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is expected to be “on the phone” to put the Reds at the head of the queue for a highly sought-after Premier League winger.

The Reds will be on the hunt for a Mohamed Salah replacement in the summer, and that’s no small feat. The Egyptian superstar has 256 goals and 122 assists to his name in a Liverpool shirt and that’ll be a tough act to follow.

The club have been heavily linked with Michael Olise of late, but reports suggest the Frenchman will be put out of reach by Bayern Munich.

Bournemouth winger Eli Junior Kroupi has a growing list of admirers amid a 10-goal debut season with the Cherries, and reports now state Liverpool are one of the clubs keen on him.

Liverpool vs Tottenham LIVE: Latest updates as Igor Tudor fights for his job at Anfield amid relegation worry

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Tottenham head to Liverpool on the back of six straight defeats as Igor Tudor looks to save his interim job, and you can follow it all live on ESPN.

Tudor has lost all four games in charge since taking temporary charge of the north London club following Thomas Frank's exit. A defeat at Anfield may well be the final straw.

Heading to Liverpool is an ominous task for any team, not least one threatened by relegation — with Spurs in the worst form of any PL side.

Confirmed Liverpool line-up v Tottenham Hotspur

Alisson Becker returns as Liverpool make five changes for today’s visit of Tottenham Hotspur.

The goalkeeper is back between the posts having missed the midweek trip to Istanbul to face Galatasaray due to a knock.

Elsewhere, there are also starts for Jeremie Frimpong, Cody Gakpo, Rio Ngumoha and Andy Robertson for the Premier League fixture at Anfield.

Liverpool: Alisson, Gomez, Van Dijk, Wirtz, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Gakpo, Robertson, Frimpong, Gravenberch, Ngumoha.

This is much better from Spurs but still a way away from where it needs to be. However they’re still in the game and I imagine they’d have taken that at kick-off.

45+3 min And Tel swings in a decent corner too, various big lads block off Van Dijk and Richarlison is up again … heading down firmly, but too close to Alisson, who shovels away.

45+2 min Tel has, as I mentioned earlier, improved in recent weeks and he’s growing into this game, burrowing into what looks like a blind alley down the left but winning a corner.

Faltering Liverpool need a big night in Istanbul to revitalise their season

Loss against Galatasaray in September summed up Slot’s struggles, creating a template he is still working to remedy

It is not the first time Liverpool have come to Istanbul looking for unlikely salvation. There is not a final on the line as there was 21 years ago, but a last-16 tie against Galatasaray feels almost as decisive for their season and possibly for the long-term future of Arne Slot, even as he marks his 100th game as manager.

It’s not even the first time Liverpool have come to Istanbul this season: their 1-0 reverse against Galatasaray in September was their second loss in a run of nine defeats in 12 games from which their season has never recovered. They are in much better form now, but will be without Alisson after he suffered a minor problem in training.

Alisson injury not 'a big thing' despite missing Galatasaray

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson has been ruled out of the first leg of the Champions League last-16 tie against Galatasaray through injury – but he could be back for the visit of Tottenham at the weekend.

The 33-year-old Brazilian sustained the injury in a training session shortly before Liverpool flew to Turkey for Tuesday's match at RAMS Park.

Reds boss Arne Slot told a news conference on Monday that Alisson felt minor discomfort and after consultation with the club's medical staff did not travel to Istanbul with the rest of the squad. Liverpool have not disclosed specifics about the injury.

"Ali, of course, was in the session as many people could see, but unfortunately he felt something towards the end of the session," Slot said.

Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa fitness update

Arne Slot has provided an update on Alisson Becker and Federico Chiesa after they missed Liverpool’s trip to Galatasaray.

The Brazilian and Italian were absent from the Liverpool squad that travelled out to Turkiye on Monday afternoon for Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 first leg.

Alisson picked up an issue during the session that preceded the Reds’ journey to Istanbul and Chiesa took no part in it due to illness.

“Federico was also not in the session, he felt unwell last night, so that’s why he wasn’t training with us today and not travelling with us,” Slot said at his pre-match press conference.

Liverpool host Brighton & Hove Albion in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday evening at Anfield. The Reds are looking to win their first FA Cup title since 2022. Last season, they went out of the competition at this stage, losing 1-0 to Plymouth Argyle in the fourth round.

Liverpool come into the game having beaten Sunderland 1-0 on Wednesday evening, when Arne Slot's side became the first team to win in the Premier League at the Stadium of Light this season.

Brighton, meanwhile, are in a serious slump. They haven't won any of the five games they've played since beating Manchester United 2-1 at Old Trafford in the last round of the FA Cup. So, they are in serious need for a turnaround in form.

Liverpool vs. Brighton: FA Cup betting odds, prediction, pick

The FA Cup fourth round Saturday slate concludes with Liverpool welcoming Brighton to Anfield.

The Reds are in sixth position in the Premier League and thrashed League One side Barnsley 4-1 in the previous round, though they have suffered elimination at this stage in six of their last nine FA Cup campaigns.

After securing a 1-0 victory over Sunderland on Wednesday to end the Black Cats' unbeaten home record, Arne Slot's side will seek to avoid another fourth-round upset after falling 1-0 to bottom-of-the-Championship Plymouth Argyle at this exact stage last season.

The Seagulls sit in 14th place in the Premier League table and have been strong in this competition despite struggling in the league with six straight winless matches.

44 min: Liverpool claim for a penalty! From the resulting free-kick, Ekitike meets the cross, nodding back across goal. At the back post, Salah flails and falls to the ground, with Bernardo Silva looking a little guilty. Replays show that the Portuguese briefly had a hold of Salah’s shirt, but there wasn’t enough in it for a foul.

Liverpool manager Arne Slot explains how his side are planning for life post Virgil van Dijk with signings like Jeremy Jacquet. (2:07)

A blockbuster clash is in store at Anfield on Sunday with Arne Slot's Liverpool hosting Pep Guardiola's Manchester City. The two teams are not in a direct title race, as has been the case over the last few years, but it's a match with plenty of talking points and the result can have lasting repercussions for the remainder of the season.

Both teams have not been in great form, winning just once in the last six games in the league. Manchester City cannot afford to drop more points as they are in the title tussle with leaders Arsenal while Liverpool will need the victory to bolster their chances of securing a top four spot.

Virgil van Dijk previews Liverpool v Man City: 'This game needs no introduction'

Virgil van Dijk knows Liverpool must produce another strong Anfield performance in order to beat Manchester City.

The Reds captain is well versed in the sides’ on-pitch rivalry ahead of its latest instalment on Sunday afternoon.

This is set to be Van Dijk’s 19th appearance for Liverpool against City and he wants his team to follow up comprehensive home victories over Qarabag and Newcastle United with another impressive display in the 4.30pm GMT kick-off.

In his notes for the official matchday programme, he writes: “This is a fixture which needs no introduction and one we are all really looking forward to.

Arsenal vs. Liverpool: We have 'point to prove' in title race – Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta says Arsenal must keep proving themselves worthy of top spot in the Premier League, starting with their clash against champions Liverpool. (0:41)

LONDON COLNEY, England — Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal have a "point to prove" against champions Liverpool as they aim to last the pace in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal sit six points clear at the table in pursuit of their first league success since 2004 having finished runners-up to Liverpool last term, their third consecutive second-place finish.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield in August in an early setback but Arne Slot's side arrive for Thursday's reverse fixture 14 adrift of their opponents after a turbulent campaign despite spending almost ÂŁ450 million ($607.04m) in the summer market.

The boss was asked about several members of his squad in his pre-match press conference, including Kai Havertz, who is nearing a return to action.

“We are monitoring obviously his load, he has been out for a long time for two different reasons and he is very close,” Mikel said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. “He trained this morning again and hopefully we are going to have him available in the best version of Kai Havertz.”

    Arsenal v Liverpool: Team news

The fitness of Hugo Ekitike and Kai Havertz is being monitored ahead of the Premier League showdown between Liverpool and Arsenal on Thursday night.

Ekitike, the Reds' top scorer this season with 11 goals in all competitions, missed the 2-2 draw at Fulham last weekend due to a hamstring complaint and delayed onset muscle soreness.

Asked for an update on the Frenchman, head coach Arne Slot said on Wednesday morning: "He has not trained with us until now and let's see if he can today.

"I've said, I think, two or three days ago when we played Fulham that he is not going to be out for long, but because games come so fast he is in between maybe training with the team or it would take him one or two days extra."

Boos are becoming an increasingly frequent fixture at the end of Tottenham games. After travelling supporters had voiced their anger at the goalless draw at Brentford on Thursday, it was the home fans’ turn to vent their frustrations after a result against Sunderland that could easily have been worse.

After a promising first-half display and Ben Davies’ opener, this draw will be even more disappointing for Thomas Frank having seen how his team were outplayed after the break by a Sunderland team still heavily depleted by players away on international duty. Brian Brobbey’s 80th-minute equaliser came at a time when the visitors were considerably the better side and perhaps looked like taking all three points.

Four wins on the bounce and seven games unbeaten in all competitions has steadied the ship at Anfield. Their three consecutive league wins has earned the Reds more points than the eight they managed across their previous 10 top-flight matches.

The shoots of recovery are there but they remain a long way from their best and were far from convincing in their 2-1 win against rock-bottom Wolves. Their failings from set pieces were again laid bare with Santiago Bueno's goal coming from a corner.

No top-flight side has conceded more goals from set pieces (excluding penalties) than Liverpool's 12 this season, while only West Ham (11) have let in more from corners than the Reds' seven.

Liverpool vs. Leeds: Preview, Predictions and Lineups

Liverpool kick off 2026 by welcoming Leeds United to Anfield in the Premier League on Thursday.

The Reds ended last year on a high as they extended their unbeaten run to seven matches and winning streak to four with victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Like several of the triumphs that have come in recent weeks, it wasn’t entirely convincing for Arne Slot’s side against the Premier League’s bottom club.

Liverpool’s defensive deficiencies are still on show and were alarmingly evident during the reverse fixture with Leeds back in early December. Two leads were surrendered in a chaotic 3–3 draw, with Ao Tanaka’s stoppage-time strike from a corner also exposing Liverpool’s vulnerabilities at set pieces.
