Uganda urged to boost local food production

Uganda has been urged to domesticate the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme, or CAADP, to tackle food insecurity, boost agricultural investment, and slash its import bill.

The country spends over USD 500 million annually on food imports, mainly wheat and vegetable oils, which experts say could be produced locally.

State Minister for Agriculture Bright Rwamirama insists the government is on the right track, particularly in reducing the vegetable oil import burden.

ZAWYA: Inside Uganda’s push to rebuild its food system from the soil up

In Kabizi, a village in Jinja district, a single vegetable plot is being watched more closely than most.

Rows of nakati (African eggplant), dodo (Amaranth), sukuma wiki (kale), cabbage and tomatoes are growing under an unusual arrangement: farmers, researchers and a biological-inputs company have agreed to let the plot answer a question that has been building for years. Can Uganda grow vegetables without poisoning its soil, killing pests’ natural predators or putting consumers at risk? Can farmers earn as much as – or more than – they do by spraying?Pests and diseases account for more than 30 per cent of vegetable yield losses nationally. Farmers have tried to chemically treat their way out of the losses, but returns are diminishing even as fertiliser and pesticide bills rise. Getting ahead of those losses cheaply is the economic pitch behind agroecology. Whether it holds up under real market conditions is what the plot in Kabizi has to prove.“We noticed that we need to take technology out from research to the field,” said Dr Joshua Okonya, a programme officer at ASARECA, a regional agricultural research organisation.“Adoption has been low for these technologies. Why? Maybe because we involve fewer farmers.”The living-lab model is designed to close that gap by making farmers co-designers rather than an audience. They will run the plots themselves, tracking pest pressure and crop growth against a conventionally managed comparison plot, while partners check in monthly over the next four to six months.

Local transmission of H5 bird flu confirmed in Australia, federal government says

Greater crested terns, like this one in South Africa, are the latest birds in which suspected cases of H5 have been detected in South Australia.  (Matthew Fainman: iNaturalist/Creative Commons)

Federal Agriculture Minister Julie Collins says "some local transmission" has occurred between a number of greater crested terns in South Australia.

She says there is no evidence of mass mortality in animal populations, but it is expected to keep spreading among wildlife.

Authorities will focus on preventing spread to livestock and poultry, but say risk to human health is low.

‘Clicky Ponting’: Local English cricketer exposed in bizarre cheating controversy

A financial manager who works at a livestock auction house has been identified as the club cricketer at the centre of a cheating scandal in a northern England cricket league.

Veteran club cricketer Brian Devine has been dubbed “Clicky Ponting” by the English press, a reference to Australian great Ricky Ponting, as he awaits his fate for his alleged role in what one opponent has described as the “worst case of cheating I’ve ever seen”.

Devine is the company secretary and a director of Northallerton Auctions Limited, a company that runs livestock markets.

According to his company profile, Devine has a “strong background in financial management built up from a wealth of industry sectors”. His profile also urges those in the area to “pop in and introduce yourself”.

Discussing Defence in the Top End

The event was the largest in the series to date and was opened by NT Chief Minister Lia Finocchiaro who used the opportunity to launch the Northern Territory’s 2026 Defence Strategy document.

The strategy itself calls for a disciplined, targeted and relentless advocacy led by the NT Government to ensure that decisions taken on basing, training, force projection and sustainment result in a larger Defence presence in the Top End.

“The Northern Territory is a modern, well-connected and rapidly growing jurisdiction,” the report states. “We will counter outdated narratives about operating in northern Australia by highlighting what the NT offers.”

Local rivalries are key for Wallabies as Super Rugby starts the new season full of hope | Angus Fontaine

Australia’s club sides can drive each other to greater heights in a year that will prove crucial ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup

The 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season kicks off this weekend and Australia needs its four provinces to make a stirring statement ahead of the 2027 home World Cup. No local side has won the men’s competition, or even made the final, since Michael Cheika’s NSW Waratahs upset now 13-time champions the Crusaders in 2014. If the Wallabies want to conquer the world, it has got to start with beating the neighbours.

The year after his Super triumph, Cheika took the Wallabies to the Rugby World Cup final (losing to New Zealand 34-17) and Rugby Australia will be praying for a repeat act in 2026. Ideally it’s the Cinderella story of Les Kiss leading the Queensland Reds to glory before he takes the reins from Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach this July, a feat that would supercharge the Kiss era and ignite home fans before next October’s tournament.

The 2026 Super Rugby Pacific season is finally here as the teams hunt for this year's title.

Once again, it's the Crusaders that will enter the season as the hunted after they defeated the Chiefs in last year's decider.
