Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost taxpayers billions more than planned as costs balloon: report

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost 50% more than he advertised, according to a new study.

The proposed program is estimated to cost a whopping $9 billion annually, approximately with an average cost per child roughly $27,000, according to the report from the Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research organization affiliated with the New School.

“An estimated $8.7 to $9.3 billion would be needed annually to fund universal child care in New York City,” the report, which was released on Monday, states.

That’s $3 billion more than the mayor previously said his ambitious universal free childcare program would cost.

Introducing a Universal Child Care Cost Model for New York

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul made a commitment to universal child care this year and took initial steps toward this bold objective in the State and City FY2027 budgets. That included piloting new contracted care services, like 2-K in New York City and 0-2 care in three upstate counties; a commitment to universal Pre-K statewide by 2028; and the establishment of a new State Office of Child Care and Early Education.

Nevertheless, questions remain about how much a universal, high-quality, stable system will cost, and who will pay for it.

To that end, the Economic and Fiscal Policy Team at the Center for New York City Affairs developed a universal child care cost model, a dynamic tool that incorporates the latest grounded assumptions and relevant costs for child care programs.

New York mayor admits he does not have authority to arrest Netanyahu, adding Israeli PM is ‘architect of a horrific genocide’

Zohran Mamdani, the New York City mayor, acknowledged on Tuesday he does not have the authority to arrest Benjamin Netanyahu, but urged US federal authorities to do so if the Israeli prime minister visits the US later this year.

“Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal, the architect of a horrific genocide against the Palestinian people,” Mamdani said in a video posted to social media.

Mamdani said he believed the international criminal court warrant for Netanyahu’s arrest over alleged war crimes was justified, but admitted he lacked the legal authority to enforce it.

Live updates: US defence boss lashed as ‘failure’ in fiery hearing

New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani has admitted that city authorities do not have the power to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should he visit the city.

Netanyahu, who has been charged with war crimes by the International Criminal Court, is expected to visit New York in September for the United Nations general assembly.

Mamdani earlier in the week said he was in “active” discussions with law enforcement, after having consistently labelled Netanyahu a war criminal over the Gaza invasion.

In a video posted to social media today, Mamdani acknowledged that it would be impossible to carry out an arrest in the name of the ICC.

Mamdani fires back at Bezos over Queens teacher tax remark

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani fired back on Wednesday at Jeff Bezos after the Amazon founder and executive chairman questioned whether raising taxes on billionaires would do anything to help working-class New Yorkers.

"You could double the taxes I pay, and it's not gonna help that teacher in Queens. I promise you," Bezos said in an interview on CNBC earlier Wednesday.

Mamdani responded on X: "I know a few teachers in Queens who would beg to differ."

He called for eliminating federal income taxes on the bottom half of earners, telling CNBC's Andrew Ross Sorkin on "Squawk Box" that the top 1% of taxpayers pay about 40% of all tax revenue, while the bottom half pay 3%.

Billionaire Jeff Bezos Says Bottom 50% Shouldn’t Pay Income Taxes

The lower half of earners in the U.S. should pay zero federal income tax, billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos said on Wednesday, as some states have proposed additional taxes for the wealthiest citizens.

The bottom 50% of earners in the U.S. account for 3% of all tax revenue, Bezos told CNBC, adding, “I think it should be zero.”

The average income tax rate was 14.1% in 2023, and the top 1% of taxpayers paid an average rate of 26.3% while the bottom half—who earned about $24,500 on average in gross income—paid an average rate of 3.7%, according to an analysis of the latest IRS data by the Tax Foundation, a tax research think tank.

Jeff Bezos torches Mamdani for pouring $43B into mismanaged NYC schools

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos torched Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the Big Apple’s sky-high school spending – touting that if his behemoth retail business ran like the city’s public school system, New Yorkers would be waiting weeks for their packages.

The billionaire on Wednesday ripped the democratic socialist mayor for dumping a record $43 billion into the mismanaged education system, fuming that New York City spends a whopping $44,000 per pupil – about 30% more than other major US cities – despite abysmal test scores and plummeting enrollment.

Bezos claimed that even doubling his billion-dollar taxes wouldn’t help a teacher in Queens – while Mamdani snapped back that he knows some educators who “would beg to differ.”

Zohran Mamdani just announced NYC's 1st city-owned grocery store. Could the idea help reverse rising food prices across the U.S.?

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced this week that the Big Apple’s first city-owned grocery store will open in the South Bronx sometime next year, delivering on a central promise of his dark-horse 2025 campaign — and pitching the project, which aims to put one public, nonprofit supermarket in each borough by the end of his first term, as “physical proof of our conviction that government can be a force for good.”

"We are going to use the power of government to lower prices and make it easier for New Yorkers to put food on the table," Mamdani, a 34-year-old Democrat and democratic socialist, said on Monday. "When government understands its purpose as serving the very working people that it has left behind, time and again, it can make a difference in the most pressing struggles facing our city today.”

Mayor Zohran Mamdani wasn’t born when the nightlife impresario Michael Dorf cooked up his first “downtown Seder” in early 1991, fusing a performance vibe with a Passover meal to create a kind of art-meets-afikoman alternative to the traditional holiday celebration.

More than 30 years later, Mr. Mamdani was the first guest to speak at this year’s iteration of Mr. Dorf’s event on Monday night, giving a brief speech — and hearing it from a pair of hecklers, as his appearance drew criticism from some quarters and a last-minute cancellation of a featured performer.

Mamdani heckled while speaking at NYC Passover Seder during tense moment

Mayor Zohran Mamdani was reportedly heckled — by a critic who shouted “every Jewish organization is a target” — while the anti-Israel pol was speaking at a Passover seder event this week.

Hizzoner was referencing the recent spike in antisemitism, that he said “has caused enormous pain for so many Jewish New Yorkers,” when the unidentified person shouted from the back of the room Monday night, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported.

Other attendees at Jewish entrepreneur Michael Dorf’s 33rd annual “Downtown Seder” at the City Winery, which he owns, reportedly shushed the heckler after the brief outburst.

One person shouted in response, “Stop the xenophobia, let him speak.”

NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani's proposal to increase property taxes angers homeowners in Southeast Queens

QUEENS, New York (WABC) — Residents in Queens were both angry and disappointed Thursday night in reaction to Mayor Zohran Mamdani's proposal to increase property taxes.

They say he promised affordable housing for his entire campaign and has now made an about face.

"I don't plan to move. It's my home. I'm not leaving," said homeowner Vivian Campbell.

This two-story single-family home in Cambria Heights is Campbell's American dream come true. His starter home has become his forever home.

He bought it just after graduating college in the 1990s. Inside, he even has a stack of CDs to prove it.

Shhh, listen. Did Mamdani say perCENT? Or percentage POINT?

Mamdani is a wizard with the percent trickery.

On Tuesday, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani laid out two possible paths to closing a $5.4 billion budget gap next year, both of which involve tax hikes.

The first – his preferred method – would include a personal income tax rate hike of two percentage points on people making over $1 million annually, as well as a corporate tax hike. The second – which he described as a “last resort” option – would include a 9.5% increase in the overall property tax rate in New York City.

Those figures shouldn’t be understood in the same way. Though Mamdani has at times described his income tax proposal as a 2% increase – “I’m asking for a 2% raise in personal income taxes on the most affluent New Yorkers,” he said on Tin Cup Day – it would in fact be an increase of two percentage points, or a roughly 52% increase in what those New Yorkers are paying in city income tax. Per city budget officials, the city income tax rate would rise from about 3.88% to 5.88% under Mamdani’s millionaire tax proposal. (Mamdani has at other times described it more clearly. During the campaign, he called for a new, flat 2% tax on people making $1 million or more annually, which would equate to paying $20,000 more in taxes for those who make exactly $1 million.)
