Opinion | The Upside-Down World of the GLP-1 Bridge

I spent 10 minutes in complete silence in my patient's room today, my eyes scanning lines of text in the electronic medical record. I wasn't looking for a life-threatening lab value or an undiscovered malignancy. I was hunting for an old diagnostic code for obstructive sleep apnea. When I finally found the assessment section of a sleep study from 2019, I celebrated. She had mild obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

My patient has class 3 obesity, prediabetes, hypertension, and mild (thankfully) OSA. With the recent trial launch of the federal Medicare GLP-1 Bridge program, American medicine has officially stepped into a contentious, bureaucratic "upside down" where being relatively healthier makes it easier to get treated, and being sicker can mean you're left behind. A subtle change from mild to moderate OSA would completely ruin her chances at receiving an affordable GLP-1 through the bridge program.

HEALTH FIRST: New Medicare program offers low-cost GLP-1 weight loss drugs

WILMINGTON, N.C. (WECT) – A new Medicare program is making select GLP-1 weight loss drugs more affordable for eligible patients, with costs as low as $50 a month.

Dr. Kara Bird with Novant Health was in the studio to discuss the Medicare GLP Bridge Program and who qualifies.

According to Dr. Bird, the program is available to Medicare Part D recipients who meet specific medical criteria, including:

“Call your doctor. Ask if you qualify,” Dr. Bird said. “If you know you have Medicare Part D, see if you have those other qualifying factors.”

"Riot has so many different plans": Ekko's actor talks about the future of "Arcane" and possible spin-offs

Reed Shannon confirmed that work on the League of Legends universe is in full swing, despite the lull in announcements.

Reed Shannon, who voiced Ekko in the animated series "Arcane", spoke about the future of his character in the League of Legends universe. In an interview with The Direct, the actor confirmed that he continues to work with Riot Games on unnamed projects and believes that the company has big plans for the franchise's development.

Shannon noted that after the completion of "Arcane", Ekko's story could continue in a variety of formats. According to the actor, the character already has so much material in the game itself that a separate story could be compiled from his lines:

Arcane's Ekko Actor Officially Responds to Riot Games' TV Spin-off Confirmation: 'The Team Told Me This Is Something That Will Last Probably The Rest of Your Life' (Exclusive)

The voice of Arcane's Ekko is discussing the future of his character following the confirmation that the series' production team is actively working on potential spin-off series. The Netflix animated series was an adaptation of Riot Games' League of Legends online multiplayer game, which ran for two seasons on Netflix from 2021 to 2024 and featured the voice talents of Hailee Steinfeld, Ella Purnell, Kevin Alejandro, Katie Leung, and Harry Lloyd. Arcane's popularity quickly fuelled hopes for a continuation, and co-creator Christian Linke revealed that the team was "pretty aggressively developing" several Arcane spin-off ideas in 2024.

During an interview with The Direct for his upcoming movie Splash City, Reed Shannon, who voices the time-manipulating rebel Ekko in Arcane, revealed how he has continued to portray the character in Riot's projects after the show's ending and his ideas for Riot's next Arcane-like project.

Arcane Ekko’s Voice Actor Teases Riot Has “So Many Different Plans”

Reed Anderson, Ekko’s voice actor from League of Legends Netflix series Arcane, has teased that Riot Games has more series coming.

Back in 2024, the show’s co-creator Christian Linke revealed that Riot was “aggressively developing” several Arcane spin-off ideas.

Now, in an interview with The Direct, Anderson has fueled the rumours by promising that Riot has “so many different plans” for the future of the franchise.

The actor then revealed that he was recording Ekko voice lines later that week and was told that the Ekko role will probably last his lifetime.

Dr. Kyle Feldmann, a cardiologist, breaks down new findings on the health benefits of drinking multiple cups of coffee a day.

Coffee drinkers may not have to feel guilty about reaching for another cup.

A new scientific statement from the American Heart Association says that consuming up to 400 milligrams of caffeine a day — the equivalent of about five 8-ounce cups of black coffee — is generally safe for most healthy adults and may even be linked to a lower risk of heart disease, stroke, heart failure and Type 2 diabetes. The findings were published Monday in the journal Circulation.

It's the gripe of many teams, but Charlie Curnow views it as a 'secret weapon'

After a highly publicised move from Carlton to Sydney, it's the little things that ground spearhead Charlie Curnow before a game

Emily Patterson has been granted inner sanctum access for Sydney's trip to Perth for the top-of-the-table clash against Fremantle. Watch live from 7.30pm AEST

EVEN when travelling for away games, Charlie Curnow always makes a beeline for the ocean.

Though currently more than 3,800km away from his beloved Tamarama Beach — as the Swans descend on Perth for their blockbuster top-of-the-table clash with the Dockers on Thursday night — the star forward remains locked into his well-versed game-day routine.

Whether it means borrowing a minivan from the team’s staff or commandeering a family member's car, he always finds a way to the water.

Curnow seizes Coleman lead in Swans' rout of Bulldogs

Sydney strengthened its grip on the top-two with a win over the Western Bulldogs

SYDNEY’s emphatic 35-point win over the Western Bulldogs on Friday night proved the Swans have steadied the ship.

The energy inside the SCG was electric for the annual Pride Game as the home side executed a dominant performance to secure a 13.12 (90) to 7.13 (55) victory.

After Brisbane completely dismantled their preferred game style the week prior, Sydney showed critical tactical maturity on their home turf to bounce back from that heavy loss.

By adjusting better to the trends their opponents presented, the Swans proved they can play a different style of footy and still get the job done. Instead of their usual overlap run by hand, they successfully relied on more uncontested marks and chipping the ball around to control the game.

Curnow’s sensational six-goal haul bullies the Dogs; English moved to full-back as Grundy dominates

The Swans bounced back in style from last week’s reality check against the Brisbane Lions, with superstar recruit Charlie Curnow booting six goals to power his new side to a 35-point win over the Western Bulldogs at the SCG, 13.12 (90) to 7.13 (55).

The Bulldogs’ backmen will be happy to see the back of Curnow for now, given he kicked seven last time they met in round seven, and his haul on Friday night took him to the top of the Coleman Medal leaderboard.

Brodie Grundy, meanwhile, looked almost unstoppable in the ruck, finishing with 17 disposals, five tackles, six clearances a staggering 60 hitouts. The Bulldogs, as a team, had just 29 hitouts.

There’s no question David Letterman left a major mark on the late night landscape, particularly during his time on The Late Show over at CBS. Celebrities over the course of decades interacted with the famously curmudgeonly man, who often kept people on their toes with acerbic observations and pointed questions. Letterman would later say he “had it coming” when it came to any “criticism” lobbed his way, but did you know the late night host was so eccentric that major stars were told not to compliment him?

Mindy Kaling recalls producers advising her not to compliment David Letterman: 'He doesn't know what to do with it'

Mindy Kaling recalled how David Letterman producers warned her not to compliment the talk show host because he "doesn't know what to do with it."

"I felt like for other shows too, [it] was like, don't do that. And then it feeds into a whole thing of like, it's not cool to compliment," Kaling said during an appearance on Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast on Tuesday.

Unlike Letterman, Kaling declared that she loves compliments, praise, and recognition.

Unlike some of the great comedic minds of late-night, Mindy Kaling loves to hear a compliment.

The Not Suitable for Work creator reflected on her love of praise during a visit to Amy Poehler's Good Hang podcast on Tuesday, in which she recalled learning others weren't of a similar mind as her during the early days of her career.

‘The Birdwatcher’ Turns Data Into a Case for Smarter Wind Energy

According to a new campaign, wind energy is built to protect the future, but risks to birds and bats around wind farms remain, including collisions, habitat disruption, and buffer zones that slow development. Spoor, in collaboration with FP7 McCANN MENAT, has launched “The Birdwatcher,” an initiative that turns AI monitoring data into a public record to show wind energy and wildlife can coexist.

Spoor’s technology combines AI-powered computer vision, geometric flight analysis, and ecological domain knowledge to detect, track, and classify birds and enable curtailment at wind energy sites to prevent fatalities.

For decades, the wind industry relied on human observers with binoculars to track bird activity, resulting in slow, fragmented data that often led to oversized buffer zones and stalled permits.

Spoor and FP7 McCANN MENAT launch ‘The Birdwatcher’ to protect wind farm wildlife

As wind energy scales globally, concerns remain around its impact on wildlife, particularly birds and bats. Collisions, habitat disruption and regulatory buffer zones continue to present challenges for the sector. The Birdwatcher addresses this by reframing the issue and shifting the conversation from limiting wind development to improving the intelligence behind it.

At the core of the initiative is Spoor’s patented technology, which combines AI-powered computer vision, geometric flight analysis and ecological expertise to continuously detect, track and classify bird activity. The system enables wind operators to take preventative action, including turbine curtailment, to reduce risk to wildlife.

Traditionally, the industry has relied on human observation, resulting in slow and fragmented data that often failed to satisfy regulators. This has led to conservative buffer zones and delays in project approvals. In contrast, Spoor’s Sky Intelligence Platform delivers continuous monitoring with detection ranges of up to 1.5 kilometres and accuracy rates of at least 95%, providing verifiable data for permitting, risk mitigation and operational decision-making.

Swiatek is great at many things — baking isn't one of them

Iga Swiatek is a master of many things, but baking is not one of them. The six-time Grand Slam champion explained her failed baking attempt after her 6-2, 6-0 win over Karolina Muchova in Indian Wells.

Iga Swiatek is known to be one of the most well-rounded players on the WTA Tour Driven by Mercedes-Benz, with a wide range of interests off the court. (Earlier this week, for example, she professed her love for classic 90s' flicks The English Patient and Legends of the Fall.)

Actually, scratch that — it was of interest, until the six-time Grand Slam champion discovered it's one of the few things that doesn't come naturally to her.

Iga Swiatek vs. Elina Svitolina: Where to Watch, Preview and Prediction

“I’m gonna have to have a lot of discipline to just finish the point even a couple of times,” Iga says.

Svitolina may be the surprise of the season. She looks rejuvenated at 31, and comes into this match with an 18-3 record, a title in Brisbane, a final in Dubai, a semi at the Australian Open, two wins over Coco Gauff, and one over Mirra Andreeva. She started Indian Wells by gritting out a three-set win over slice machine Laura Siegemund, so you know she’s ready for anything.

Now, though, she’ll have to raise her game a level. Swiatek is 4-1 against Svitolina, and she’s playing in one of her favorite locations. She has won two titles on these courts, and she just dominated two strong opponents, Maria Sakkari and Karolina Muchova, back to back.

‘Mesmerising’ star one of many Aus answers for ‘handbrake’ as BBL gun catches eye

Watching Alex Carey flourish as a wicketkeeper has been a privilege, according to Australian great Adam Gilchrist — the man who presented the Ashes star with his baggy green cap just over four years ago.

In a phenomenal performance in Australia’s 4-1 triumph over England, 34-year-old Carey was involved in 28 dismissals and scored 323 runs at an average of 46.4, including a century at Adelaide Oval.

Carey, who took 27 catches and affected one stumping, finished just one dismissal behind the all-time Ashes record held by Brad Haddin and clearly outpointed rival Jamie Smith, who arrived in Australia with a big reputation.

The Ashes: Alex Carey Australia’s silent assassin against England as he joins rare wicketkeeping club

Australia’s silent assassin is being celebrated for an Ashes series that rivals some of the best wicketkeepers ever to hold the hopes of the nation in their gloves.

While Mitchell Starc and Travis Head stole the show across a 4-1 series win over England, Alex Carey’s work behind the stumps, as well as his important knocks in front of them, put him on the podium of performances this summer.

Carey was fittingly at the crease on Thursday to hit the winning runs as Australia put the cherry on another Ashes victory at the SCG, that final unbeaten knock taking him to 323 runs for the series at 46.14.

Alex Carey emulates Adam Gilchrist's feat in Ashes 2025-26: Details

Australia's wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey has emulated legendary Adam Gilchrist by scoring over 300 runs and making more than 25 dismissals in a single Test series.
Carey achieved this feat during the recently concluded Ashes 2025-26, becoming only the second player to achieve it in a single series, following Gilchrist's two occurrences.
He ended the series with a total of 323 runs and 28 dismissals behind the stumps in five matches.

Carey scored his maiden Ashes century in Adelaide, a series-sealing knock, and also had the honor of scoring the winning runs.
He ended the series with 323 runs in five matches and eight innings at an average of 46.14.
His tally included a century and two fifties, with his best score being an impressive 106.
Carey also made significant contributions behind the stumps with a total of 28 dismissals, including 27 catches and one stumping.
