Marlon 'Chito' Vera returning to where it all started in Mexico City, this time as a man fighting for his job

A little over 11 years ago, Marlon Vera showed up on the scene in Mexico City as a fresh-faced kid to kick off the prelims for UFC 180. He was just 21 years old at the time, the only visible tattoo on his chest was the name Ana Paula, his 3-year-old daughter who had been born with a rare neurological condition known as Moebius syndrome.

"Chito," as he was not yet popularly known, was fighting to earn money for her medical bills, and the first stop on what would become a contender’s odyssey. He was the first fighter to ever walk out for a UFC event in Mexico City, and he cried on his way to the Octagon with the flag of Ecuador wrapped around his shoulders.

Chito Vera plans to flip the narrative when he faces David Martinez at UFC Mexico

Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera knows he needs to pick things up early in fights, and that’s exactly what he plans to do this Saturday.

The one-time UFC bantamweight title challenger faces surging contender David Martinez in the co-main event of UFC Mexico in Mexico City. Vera enters the fight on a three-fight skid, the longest of his fighting career, although he feels he was robbed by the judges in his recent loss to Aiemann Zahabi at UFC Vancouver this past October.

Vera believes, despite the loss on paper, he did do more in the first round, which has been a knock against him as he’s been a fighter that starts a bit slower, then picks things up. When asked if the plan would be to get really aggressive early on against Martinez, Vera delivered a candid response.

UFC Mexico full fight video: Marlon Vera faceplants Dominick Cruz

Marlon Vera may be slumping the past three years, but the last time he got a stoppage win was an all-time thriller.

Vera headlined his second straight UFC fight in August 2022 when he took on former bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz in front of Cruz's home fans in San Diego. And in the championship rounds, Vera put the ex-titleholder away with a highlight-reel finish.

Vera tried to put Cruz's head into the stands with a kick, and that. got him the knockout at the 2:17 mark of the fourth round. The win earned him his fourth straight post-fight bonus award.

Since then, Vera has gone just 1-4, with all four losses by decision, including a pair of close split calls. Saturday, Vera (23-11-1 MMA, 15-10 UFC) returns looking to end his skid when he takes on David Martinez (13-1 MMA, 2-0 UFC) in the UFC Fight Night 268 co-main event at Arena CDMX in Mexico City.
