Mavericks' crucial starting lineup change is staring Jason Kidd in the face

The Dallas Mavericks fell short on Christmas Day versus the Golden State Warriors by a score of 126-116, as Anthony Davis exited the game in the second quarter with a groin injury and didn’t return, but the main silver lining from this game was Brandon Williams’ performance.

Williams has strung together some solid basketball recently, and given rookie Ryan Nembhard’s up-and-down play through the last handful of games, perhaps Dallas could look at re-inserting Williams into the starting lineup.

Williams had 26 points on 9-12 shooting from the field, helping keep the Mavericks within striking distance because of his finishing and his ability to get in the lane and draw fouls. While 3-point shooting has been a sore spot for Williams this season, he banked in the only 3-pointer he took in this game, and he hit multiple long twos off the dribble.

Jason Kidd’s controversial starting five move was exactly what Mavericks needed

Jason Kidd unexpectedly inserted Naji Marshall into the Dallas Mavericks’ starting lineup after P.J. Washington rolled his right ankle on a basketball right before Dallas took on the LA Clippers last month. This was a freak injury, and while Marshall starting made sense to fans for the four games that Washington missed, he continued to start even once Washington returned.

Kidd sent Max Christie to the bench to keep Marshall in the starting unit, and this move was definitely viewed as controversial when it happened. Christie had been one of the best 3-point shooters in the NBA all season long, and fans feared that this new-look starting five of Marshall, Ryan Nembhard, Washington, Cooper Flagg, and Anthony Davis wouldn’t have enough shooting.

NBA Trade Rumors 2025-26: Anthony Davis rumors fly, Harden to stay put, Hawks active

Trade rumors are flying as the NBA trade deadline is just a little over a month away (Feb. 5), but it feels like the biggest names are more likely to stay put as teams are asking a lot — or is all this negotiating posturing? Here is the latest. (Note, for the latest on Giannis Antetokounmpo rumors, click this link.)

There are so many Anthony Davis reports, we are going to use bullet points to break them down.

    • Dallas being patient. Whatever you think of former GM Nico Harrison’s vision for this season’s Mavericks – a roster built around Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Cooper Flagg — the reality is we have yet to see that trio on the court together (because Irving is recovering from a torn ACL). Marc Stein reports in his latest Substack newsletter that the man who makes the ultimate decision in Dallas — Patrick Dumont, the team governor who signed off on the Luka Doncic trade — doesn’t want to rush the team’s next big move.

The Hawks are reportedly serious about an Anthony Davis trade, but that raises questions about Trae Young

The Anthony Davis trade market seemed fairly quiet in the immediate aftermath of Nico Harrison's firing. A strong December seems to have awakened some suitors. In the nine games he completed this month, Davis has averaged over 23 points and nearly 13 rebounds while providing his standard defensive excellence and helping the Mavericks creep their way back into the Western Conference Play-In Tournament picture.

A number of teams, including the Golden State Warriors, have reportedly considered runs at Davis, but the Atlanta Hawks, according to Marc Stein, "do appear to be the most determined suitor for Davis at this juncture." There's a pretty straightforward path to a trade available if Atlanta wants to pursue it. The Hawks can do a good chunk of the necessary salary-matching with the expiring contract of Kristaps Porziņģis. They have a recent No. 1 overall pick in Zaccharie Risacher who, according to Stein, they are open to dealing in the right package.
