Few stories have dominated discourse and headlines like that of Jason Arday. The University of Cambridge professor, now resigned, was accused of plagiarism, and appears to have made up an awful lot of fantastical stories about his life. But weeks into the affair, it feels that there has been an additional layer of reality-distortion: this time, by the rightwing press and in broader public discourse. This week, I try to unravel some of the falsehoods that have taken hold around the matter.

I share concerns over Arday appointment, says Cambridge University head

The vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge has said she understands the concerns raised by the appointment of Jason Arday and shares them too.

In a letter to staff, Prof Deborah Prentice acknowledged the "anger and anxiety around this damaging and difficult case".

The university head also announced Cambridge's investigation would be independent and carried out by senior academics from within and beyond Cambridge and will begin "as soon as possible".

Arday resigned as a Cambridge professor of sociology of education last week amid allegations of plagiarism and questions about some of his achievements.

The 41-year-old – who became Cambridge's youngest ever black professor in 2023 – denies any plagiarism and said the recent furore had led to "an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack".

Steven May to launch legal action against the Demons and senior figures

Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost taxpayers billions more than planned as costs balloon: report

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s universal childcare plan will cost 50% more than he advertised, according to a new study.

The proposed program is estimated to cost a whopping $9 billion annually, approximately with an average cost per child roughly $27,000, according to the report from the Center for New York City Affairs, a nonpartisan research organization affiliated with the New School.

“An estimated $8.7 to $9.3 billion would be needed annually to fund universal child care in New York City,” the report, which was released on Monday, states.

That’s $3 billion more than the mayor previously said his ambitious universal free childcare program would cost.

Introducing a Universal Child Care Cost Model for New York

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul made a commitment to universal child care this year and took initial steps toward this bold objective in the State and City FY2027 budgets. That included piloting new contracted care services, like 2-K in New York City and 0-2 care in three upstate counties; a commitment to universal Pre-K statewide by 2028; and the establishment of a new State Office of Child Care and Early Education.

Nevertheless, questions remain about how much a universal, high-quality, stable system will cost, and who will pay for it.

To that end, the Economic and Fiscal Policy Team at the Center for New York City Affairs developed a universal child care cost model, a dynamic tool that incorporates the latest grounded assumptions and relevant costs for child care programs.

Preliminary study shows older people who avoided food four hours before bed did better in problem solving tests

Confining mealtimes and snacks to a nine-hour window and avoiding food for four hours before bed may help stave off cognitive decline in older age, researchers say.

A pilot study of older women living with overweight or obesity found hints of improvement in mental skills among those who ate within the restricted period compared with those who spread their meals over a longer time.

The finding is preliminary given the numbers in the trial, but if confirmed in larger studies, the work suggests people could help to protect their cognitive abilities by eating within a relatively narrow window and not eating late into the night.

Restricted Eating Windows Aid Cognitive Function

Summary: A pilot clinical trial suggests that combining time-restricted eating with calorie reduction yields cognitive benefits for older, overweight, or obese women beyond weight loss alone.

The six-month trial evaluated 47 women aged 50 to 79. While both groups lost an average of 15 pounds via a daily 500-calorie deficit, participants who restricted their eating to an 8 to 9 hour daily window demonstrated significant improvements in spatial planning and problem-solving compared to those adhering to a standard 12-hour window.

The findings indicate that aligning nutrient intake with circadian rhythms may protect executive function and spatial memory in populations at elevated risk for dementia.

Results from a small clinical trial suggest it may be possible to reduce your risk of dementia by eating during fewer hours of the day. The pilot study, which involved a weight-loss program for older women with overweight or obesity, showed modest cognitive improvements in those who limited their daily eating window instead of just reducing their calorie intake.

Rudd fears China may move to seize Taiwan in 2028

Former prime minister Kevin Rudd fears Chinese President Xi Jinping may underestimate US resolve to defend Taiwan and move to take the strategic Pacific island democracy by force as early as 2028.

Taiwan People's Party delegation visits Shanghai

BEIJING – A mainland spokesperson on Wednesday confirmed that a youth delegation from the Taiwan People's Party is visiting Shanghai from Tuesday to Friday.

Zhu Fenglian, spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said at a press conference that the delegation's four-day visit covers Yangshan Port, a major global shipping hub, the operating center of a public service hotline for citizens to offer suggestions and voice concerns about city governance, and the Shanghai Sihang Warehouse Battle Memorial commemorating those who fought in the War of the Chinese People's Resistance Against Japanese Aggression.

The delegation will also have a discussion and interaction with young faculty and students from Shanghai Jiao Tong University, she said.

A NSW man has told an inquiry that he and a friend were picked up by Ivan Milat while they were hitchhiking in the 1970s.

The account is one of many submitted to the inquiry into unsolved disappearances in NSW.

The inquiry will hold its first hearing in Bowral after visiting the Belanglo State Forest.

A New South Wales man who believes Ivan Milat picked him up while hitchhiking as a teenager in the mid-1970s has told an inquiry that a speeding ticket saved his life.

A 61-year-old man who was one of seven passengers injured when a Transperth bus smashed into a tree in Wanneroo has died in hospital.

A 59-year-old woman who was critically injured in the crash remains in a serious condition, and it is understood the 56-year-old male driver is also still in a serious condition.

Police are investigating whether the bus driver suffered a medical episode that caused him to lose control, and say inquiries into the crash are ongoing.

A 61-year-old passenger who was critically hurt in a bus crash in Perth's northern suburbs has died from his injuries, and police are investigating whether the driver suffered a medical episode.

Seven injured after Transperth bus crashes into tree in Wanneroo

A 61-year-old man who died after a Transperth bus crashed into a tree in Wanneroo on Thursday has been identified as Banksia Grove father Rooney Taua.

Taua was one of eight people, including the bus’ driver, who were hospitalised following the crash on Joondalup Drive about 11am on Thursday.

A 59-year-old woman was being treated for critical injuries in Royal Perth Hospital, while the 56-year-old bus driver was taken to the same hospital for treatment for his injuries.

Taua was rushed to Joondalup Health Campus with serious injuries, but a WA Police spokesperson confirmed on Friday morning the man had died in hospital.

El Niño is a recurring climate event with impacts across the globe. It has three phases: one cold (known as La Niña), one neutral, and one warm (El Niño).

In 2026, spring in the northern hemisphere took place in a neutral phase, which followed a relatively mild La Niña. Short-term forecast models indicate that by mid-year it is very likely that we will enter an El Niño phase. Australia should prepare for an imminent El NiÃ±o, with the Bureau of Meteorology and other agencies forecasting that the weather phenomenon is likely to develop in the coming months.

âThe models are really aligning now,â Felicity Gamble, a senior BoM climatologist, said. âWe are expecting a transition to El NiÃ±o sometime during winter.â

The World Meteorological Organization said on Tuesday there was a 90% chance of an El NiÃ±o developing in the Pacific before November â a phenomenon that historically has increased the likelihood of hotter and drier conditions for Australiaâs east.
