Blasphemy from Oscar Piastri had to be censored on more than one occasion during his frustrating Hungarian Grand Prix. But it was the Australian’s use of the M-word that will fuel speculation about his future at the halfway mark of a disappointing Formula One season.

“Mate, just don’t fucking talk to me now,” Piastri said down his radio to his crew after the moment a possible race victory was lost, when the team’s pit stop strategy left him in traffic and exposed to backmarker incompetence. “Nice of you guys to factor that one in by the way, thanks,” Piastri added.

Sainz explains why he was caught out in Piastri clash

Williams' Carlos Sainz has shared his thoughts about a tense incident involving Oscar Piastri during the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Carlos Sainz has given his take on the contact made with Oscar Piastri while being lapped during the Hungarian Grand Prix, which earned him a five-second penalty.

Piastri escaped without damage, but he lost precious seconds and momentum, compromising his battle with team mate Lando Norris. He made his frustration clear with some fairly colourful language on team radio.

At the time, Sainz was chasing his friend and countryman Fernando Alonso as they scrapped over 14th position.

It was when the Williams driver cut back across the track that he clipped the front of Piastri’s McLaren. As the FIA stewards noted, the Australian was in Sainz’s blind spot at that point.

McLaren gets latest Mercedes F1 engine two races after works team

Both McLaren drivers will get the latest specification of Mercedes Formula 1 engine at this weekend's Belgian Grand Prix, two rounds after it debuted aboard the factory Mercedes cars.

Kimi Antonelli and George Russell received a new specification of Mercedes power unit in Austria, which featured a number of reliability improvements. Its other customers Alpine and Williams ran the new version at Silverstone one week later.

McLaren did not swap to it at the Red Bull Ring or Silverstone because it still had mileage to use on its existing power units, having already cycled through many components because of reliability issues in 2026 so far – including the two distinct battery issues that prevented Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri from starting the Chinese GP in March.

McLaren to debut Mercedes power unit upgrade at Spa

Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri will use the revised specification at Spa-Francorchamps, which was developed as a reliability upgrade following a series of failures earlier in the season.

George Russell and Kimi Antonelli debuted the engine in the factory Mercedes cars in Austria before Alpine and Williams adopted it at Silverstone, leaving McLaren as the final Mercedes-powered customer to make the switch.

McLaren’s delay was not due to a lack of access to the new engine, with chief executive Zak Brown explaining before the British Grand Prix that the team still had usable mileage remaining on its existing pool of power units.

Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have given their take on the change in fortunes that saw McLaren face a trickier Qualifying in Miami hours after winning the Sprint, with Piastri calling it a “kick back down to reality”.

The weekend got off to a strong start for the Woking-based squad – one of many outfits to bring an upgrade package to the event – as Norris sealed pole position in Friday’s Sprint Qualifying, which he then converted into a win in the Sprint earlier on Saturday.

Charles Leclerc took a strong third for Ferrari, but Mercedes, dominant for the opening three meetings, could manage only fourth and sixth for George Russell and Kimi Antonelli respectively. Antonelli had finished fourth, but was given a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits, a costly error for the championship leader.
