They feature a lot in the pool and the track, as you'd expect, but you'll catch them on NRL and NRLW players too from time to time, thanks to the recent inclusion of rugby sevens.

Petria Thomas got them on her right ankle 30 years ago and, after Glasgow, she's had the 2026 Commonwealth Games logo inked on the other side.

"The Commonwealth Games has been such a big part of my life, as big a part as the Olympics, so I thought why not?" the eight-time Olympic medallist said.

Quotes of the Games: Glasgow 2026

A selection of some of the memorable things the athletes have had to say at the Commonwealth Games.

Some of the best quotes from the last 10 days at Glasgow 2026.

South Africa's third place in the closing event of the Swimming programme, the Men's 4x100m Medley Relay, earned Chad le Clos (pictured) his 21st Commonwealth medal, making him the most-decorated athlete in the history of the Games:

"To stand alone in history is unbelievable. Four years ago I needed one more, then Emma (McKeon, Australian swimmer) came past me and I thought, 'Damn, now I need three more'. … I was nervous. I was shaking on the blocks … emotionally it's probably the hardest thing.

What does the US-Iran deal mean for oil prices and the world economy?

More than three months after the US and Israel first began their war with Iran, the White House and the Iranian regime have agreed a framework deal to bring about a more long-term end to hostilities.

The Middle East crisis sent global oil prices soaring as the conflict effectively closed one of the world's key water transport routes for oil, liquid natural gas and other essential commodities, limiting global supplies.

But experts warn a return to normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will take time, and the impact of the war will continue to affect the global economy for potentially months to come.

Pretending AI doesn’t mean change won’t protect workers

Saying AI is good for national productivity does not make loss painless. But pretending every role can be preserved would not be fair either.

Artificial intelligence has to prove its value in people’s lives. Too often it is presented as something people must accept or as a tool for companies to lower costs. Both miss the point. The question is whether AI helps Australia become more capable and Australians more prosperous.

This week the Commonwealth Bank is hosting its first Accelerate AI conference, bringing together 800 customers, technologists, policymakers and global AI builders to test what is already working, where the risks are, and how Australian organisations can use artificial intelligence to serve customers better, save time and build stronger businesses.

If Australia is home to an AI gold rush, let’s not squander it. Let’s fjord a different path | Peter Lewis

Tech titans appear to be cosying up to Canberra with an eye to training data models here. An AI wealth fund could share in the profits

Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast

The CEOs of AI titans Microsoft and Anthropic have been duchessing Canberra. The reason? They have bet the house that we are at the beginning of an AI gold rush and they have a big problem: they need to find secure places to train their massive models.

Having exhausted the US’s public tolerance for data centres and the eye-popping amount of energy and water they consume, these companies need stable bases to power these mega-data projects to drive their technology. This requires access to space, renewable energy and a stable political environment, resources that are in short supply globally.

How Maycee Barber's mean streak has fueled her successful, obstacle-filled journey to top of UFC

If there's a super power within the skill set of Maycee Barber that has helped her sustain a seven-fight win streak — despite multiple layoffs and health scares outside the cage — it might be the ferociousness with which she competes.

You can call it passion, drive or what it appears to be: a mean streak. And it has been on display since the moment the Greely, Colorado, native burst onto the UFC scene in 2018 during Season 2 of "The Dana White Contender Series" as a 20-year-old prospect.

"I guess you could call it a super power, but I just feel like I have a thing and it's something I possess," Barber told CBS Sports HQ on Tuesday. "Not a lot of other girls possess it. I love that about myself, and I definitely lean into it. I just know that there is not a single girl who can go into the Octagon with me and have nearly that amount of aggression and dominance that I have."

Maycee Barber plans to request Mark Smith ‘is not the ref’ in UFC Seattle rematch with Alexa Grasso

Maycee Barber is not over Mark Smith’s performance at UFC 323

Maycee Barber is going to do eveything in her power to make sure Mark Smith is not the referee in the biggest fight of her career this Saturday.

Barber looks to avenge the last loss of her career when she faces Alexa Grasso in a rematch at UFC Seattle this Saturday. The flyweight bout serves as the co-main event. Since the UFC 258 decision loss to Grasso in February 2021, Barber has won all seven of her octagon bouts.

It was the most recent fight that left Barber scratching her head. After missing nearly two years due to a health scare, Barber returned at UFC 323 this past December and picked up a win over Karine Silva. During the fight, Barber got blasted with an illegal upkick on the ground. Referee Mark Smith called it a “glancing blow” and ordered Barber to make a decision if she wanted to keep fighting, which led her to tell MMA Fighting in a past interview that she “doesn’t feel safe in there” with Smith as the referee.

'I don't mean this in a disrespectful way': What Tassie gun plans to do to cocky English opponent

Tasmania's Rob Wilkinson is confident he will get his career back on track against "cocky" Englishman Luke Trainer in Dubai on Sunday (AEDT).

Wilkinson, 33, has had nine months to stew since his last fight, a TKO loss to Phil Davis in Orlando.

And Trainer, a 29-year-old who calls himself 'The Gent,' has fanned the flames ahead of the much anticipated showdown.

v, because like I said he might knock me out in the first minute," Trainer said.

"I think I'm going to put him out in the first round. I think if he shoots on me, I'll strangle him. If not the second, if not the third. I believe I will put him away."

Luke Trainer believes title shot next with big win in return at PFL Dubai

Luke Trainer hopes a big performance at PFL Dubai gets him a championship bout against Corey Anderson

Luke Trainer is ready to remind people who he is after a lengthy layoff, and hopes to parlay that into a championship opportunity.

Trainer returns to action for the first time since September 2024 to face former PFL season champion Rob Wilkinson this Saturday at PFL Dubai. Trainer enters the bout a winner of four straight, and eight of nine, as he makes his first appearance in the PFL SmartCage after a seven-fight run with Bellator.

“The Gent” was hoping to face a different opponent, but he’s thrilled to face a dangerous and seasoned fighter like Wilkinson.

Road to the title: Rob Wilkinson’s dream of being a two-time PFL champ

Always within arm’s reach of the world title and never one to cherry-pick opponents, ‘Razor’ Rob Wilkinson returns to the cage with a burning fire in his eyes and championship gold on his mind.

In a sport full of endless highs and lows, not many fighters can say they reached the pinnacle of MMA and became a world champion, let alone an Australian from Tasmania who defied the odds. Rob Wilkinson (19-4-0) etched his name in the history books in 2022, becoming the PFL light heavyweight champion —  and he plans to make history again.

Almost one year since he last fought in May 2025, Wilkinson, the number-three-ranked light heavyweight, is set to take on number-six-ranked Luke ‘The Gent’ Trainer (9-1-0) on Saturday, Feb 7, 2026, at PFL Dubai: Nurmagomedov vs Davis.
