Melbourne's Supreme Court battle to land Zac Lomax has taken on added importance after the Storm lost star winger Xavier Coates for the first nine rounds of the season.

Melbourne confirmed early Friday morning Coates would need to undergo surgery just weeks out from their season opener against Parramatta, sidelining him for two months.

The injury is the same one that forced Maroons star Coates to miss last year's Ashes series in England, following Melbourne's grand-final loss to Brisbane.

"Unfortunately, he has not been able to progress as we would have hoped," Melbourne's football director Frank Ponissi said.

Australian Open insulates tennis from extreme heat but still faces million-dollar hit

Rod Laver and Margaret Court Arenas protected by roofs and aircon

Tens of thousands of tennis fans are expected to stay away from the Australian Open on Tuesday as temperatures climb above 40C, but the Melbourne Park grand slam has largely been able to insulate itself – physically and commercially – from the effects of extreme heat.

The daytime attendance for the heat-affected Saturday was 51,048, down more than 10,000 compared with the previous and following days, and an even greater decline is expected on Tuesday given widespread publicity of the Victorian heatwave. Sales of $35 ground passes have been slow and queues at security appeared shorter than usual shortly after gates opened at 9am.

Science expert explains Australian Open's heatwave risk

Science Communicator Maddie Massy says top-tier players at the Australian Open can expect heat-related issues due to the design of the tennis courts and stadium.

"This is a big problem at the moment", Massy told Troy Sincock.

"The court design really doesn't help…they absorb a lot of heat".

MR vs PS, BBL|15, Match Prediction: Who will win today’s game between Melbourne Renegades and Perth Scorchers?

Big Bash League 2025-26 heads to Docklands Stadium for a high-stakes encounter as the Melbourne Renegades face off against the Perth Scorchers. While the Scorchers are hunting for a top-two finish, the Renegades are fighting for survival in what is essentially a “must-win” scenario to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Currently sitting in seventh place with three wins and five losses, the Melbourne Renegades find themselves on thin ice as they struggle for consistency despite a talented roster. However, the team will draw immense confidence from their previous encounter with Perth, where they secured a thrilling victory on the final ball. Their campaign has been spearheaded by Josh Brown, who has acted as a lighthouse for the batting unit with 305 runs, while Gurinder Sandhu has been spectacular with the ball, leading the attack with 18 wickets. Despite these individual brilliance, the Renegades’ primary weakness lies in a fragile middle order; high-profile stars like Mohammad Rizwan and Jake Fraser-McGurk have yet to fire consistently, often leaving the lower order with too much work to do.

New Melbourne-Bali flights coming in 2026 as holidays boom

Bali-bound travel keeps climbing, and Victorian travellers are about to gain another way to get there. Indonesia AirAsia has confirmed a new daily service from Melbourne to Denpasar, starting on 20 March 2026.

Giving Aussies yet more choice on one of the country’s busiest leisure routes, the new service will link Melbourne Airport and Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar). The new service marks the low-cost carrier’s fourth Australian port after Perth, Darwin and Adelaide.

Despite Bali’s popularity, the exploration needn’t stop there. With the new service, Australians will also have a new pathway to other Indonesian destinations, including Jakarta, Surabaya, Lombok and Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park.

AirAsia announces new international route for 2026 with direct flights from Melbourne to Bali

AirAsia has announced a new international route operated by Indonesia AirAsia for 2026, connecting Melbourne to Bali with tickets from $199 and offering Aussies more choice when flying to one of their favourite destinations.

Additional connectivity options are available beyond Indonesia, with AirAsia’s convenient Fly-Thru service. Passengers from Melbourne can connect seamlessly to major destinations across the AirAsia network such as Phuket, Bangkok, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, without the need to collect baggage during transit.

Home>Weather News>Melbourne shivers through coldest November day in 80 years

Parts of southern and eastern Victoria have endured their coldest and wettest November days in decades, with Melbourne itself measuring its equal-coldest November 24-hour maximum since 1945.

The cool conditions across Victoria were associated with brisk southerly winds ushering in a cold airmass and the persistence of cloud and rain. Despite winds blowing across the bay, with water temperatures of around 15ºC, the mercury in Melbourne failed to rise above a bone-rattling 12.7ºC across the city – about 8-9ºC below average. The maximum was achieved right before 9am on Sunday, November 9th, with daytime temperatures trending cooler than nighttime temperatures as seen below. When adding in the wind chill factor, temperatures would have felt as cold as 5-6ºC at times during the day, which is more winter-like than spring-like.

Today, this city felt 25 degrees. Tomorrow, it'll feel like 5
