    Business leaders and political figures, including the prime minister, have attended Labor identity Tim Picton's memorial service in Perth.

    Mr Picton died earlier this week after allegedly being struck in Perth's entertainment district.

    His brother Chris Picton, who is the SA health minister, has remembered Mr Picton as someone who sought connection and loved his daughter dearly.

    Political figures and business leaders have travelled from around the country to pay tribute to Labor identity Tim Picton at his memorial service in Perth.

    Mr Picton died on January 19 after allegedly being assaulted in Perth's entertainment district of Northbridge, having spent three weeks in a coma in hospital.

    Federal cabinet minister Madeleine King has backed the Adelaide Festival's controversial decision to axe a Palestinian-Australian writer from its writers' week event.

    It is the first time a federal minister has offered their views on the growing furore, which has led multiple board members to step down and dozens of writers to pull out of the event.

    Louise Adler has resigned as director of Adelaide Festival’s Writers’ Week, saying she “cannot be party to silencing writers” after the festival board removed Palestinian-Australian writer Dr Randa Abdel-Fattah from this year’s program.

    Writing for The Guardian, Adler said she did so “with a heavy heart”.

    It is the first time Adler has spoken since the board’s decision, which she argued vehemently against, was revealed last Thursday. Since then, four members of the Adelaide Festival board have resigned, including the chair, and writers have pulled out en masse. Adler says her count is 180.
