A cultural icon and pint-sized pop monarch, Kylie Minogue's 40-year reign includes more than 80 million records sold, 5 billion streams, 18 ARIA Awards, two Grammys and numerous successful tours and performances.

Behind the affable girl-next-door charm, iconic gold hot pants and parade of hits that have made her Australia's highest-selling solo artist, there is a recurring theme of resilience and reinvention.

Every time her career seemed to falter, Kylie would return stronger than ever.

In the Noongar language, Kylie means "boomerang," and, as Minogue herself points out in the excellent three-part Netflix documentary titled, naturally, Kylie: "I do my best to come back."

I’m risking people marching on my place with pikes. But some things must be said about Kylie

Watching the new Kylie doco on Netflix wasn’t on my to-do list. I’m up to pussy’s bow looking into infrared face masks and how to save Insta recipes without screenshotting them.

Look, I adore her music. Always have. Can still sing every word of Some Kind of Bliss and Too Much of a Good Thing. At my first wedding, Better the Devil You Know was our second song. I’ve kept her first three albums on vinyl through five house moves.

But apart from the songs and fashion, Kylie has never fascinated me. In, what, 35 years, she’s never said anything I’ve found truly smart or funny or even wry.

New documentary traces Kylie Minogue’s career, from harsh early critics to pop stardom

Netflix’s three-part documentary about Kylie Minogue, Kylie, covers her nearly 40 year career. We go from the release of Minogue’s first self-titled album and time as an actor on Neighbours to the present day with a new single Light Up and preparations for an anniversary tour next year.

Minogue is well represented in this documentary. Her commentary shows her depth of character, understanding and connection as a music professional.

Minogue frames the documentary, sitting in what looks like her archive room, going through boxes of slides and mementos, including a glorious moment with a 1980s boombox which she says “started it all”.

‘Beyond the limit of detection’: Why breast cancer comes back

For five years, Kylie Minogue kept her second cancer diagnosis to herself. But her situation is far from uncommon – up to 30 per cent of women diagnosed with breast cancer experience a relapse.

Minogue first battled breast cancer in 2005, aged 36. “I was misdiagnosed initially,” Minogue told US talk show host Ellen DeGeneres at the time. “So my message to all of you and everyone at home is, because someone is in a white coat and using big medical instruments, doesn’t necessarily mean they’re right.”

The announcement led to “the Kylie effect”, a 101 per cent increase in women booking in for breast screening. Following a partial mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy Minogue was pronounced cancer-free in 2006.

Kylie Minogue reveals she had second cancer diagnosis in 2021

Kylie Minogue has revealed she had a second cancer diagnosis in 2021, after having received successful treatment for breast cancer in 2005.

In her self-titled new Netflix documentary – released on Wednesday – the Australian singer said she "got through it, again", but added she decided not to go public with the news.

"My second cancer diagnosis was in early 2021. I was able to keep that to myself," said Minogue, 57. "Not like the first time."

"Thankfully, I got through it, again, and all is well," she continued. "Hey, who knows what's around the corner, but pop music nurtures me… my passion for music is greater than ever."

Kylie review – this refreshingly raw, real encounter with pop royalty will move you to tears

This affecting anti-hagiography traces the ascent of a bona fide superstar, featuring interviews with Nick Cave, Dannii, Jason Donovan – and the icon herself making a shocking cancer revelation

Beyond the sequins, feathers and gold hotpants, the stories of the most enduring pop megastars tend to be ones of jaw-dropping grit and undimmable power. Especially when they’re women. So it is with Kylie: pint-sized seller of over 80m records, singer of two of the greatest pop bangers of all time (Can’t Get You Out of My Head and Padam Padam, obviously), and the reticent subject of this increasingly intimate and, finally, profoundly moving three-part Netflix documentary. What starts as a bog-standard run-through of Kylie’s ascent to superstardom – an excess of Pete Waterman, Neighbours clips and virulent 1990s sexism – ends with a disclosure that moves me to tears.

Kylie Minogue reflects on four decades of fame, past loves and cruel misogyny in Netflix doc

This is read by an automated voice. Please report any issues or inconsistencies here.

While reflecting upon her four-decade-long career in “Kylie,” an intimate new three-part Netflix documentary, Kylie Minogue says a throwaway line that anchors the endeavor: “Life makes sense to me onstage.” Considering how she’s made 17 albums, sold 80 million records worldwide, her songs have been streamed over 5 billion times, and how she’s Australia’s bestselling female artist of all time, with shelves full of accolades like 18 ARIA Awards and two Grammys, one can easily understand her POV.

Directed by Emmy-winning editor Michael Harte (“Three Identical Strangers,” “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” “Beckham”), we’re given a glimpse into Minogue’s life through a narrative composed of home movie footage, personal photos and new interviews with her, family, former colleagues, lovers and dear friends like musician Nick Cave, who affectionately refers to her as “this force” in the “joy machine” of pop music. An immensely popular teen soap actor turned pop superstar, Minogue, 57, learned how to smile for the camera on cue despite intense — and often cruel and misogynistic — scrutiny of her every move at a very early age. As she grows and evolves, we witness the evolution of a publicly confident, sparkly superstar and a warm, private, resilient survivor of breast cancer and the fickle middle finger of showbiz who doesn’t take herself too seriously.
