    The moment that will haunt NZ's first female UFC athlete

    There is a lot Michelle Montague has taken away from her UFC debut.

    The first New Zealand woman to compete in the world’s top mixed martial arts promotion, the 32-year-old from Matamata was strong on her way to a unanimous decision win in Perth last September.

    The fight
    was one of several firsts for the Florida-based Kiwi, as it was also her first bout at bantamweight (61.2kg) and the first time she had been in a bout that allowed elbows to be used for striking.

    Now, as she prepares for her return against No 12-ranked bantamweight Mayra Bueno Silva on the UFC card in Las Vegas this weekend, Montague is taking all of those lessons on board.

    Mayra Bueno Silva now resembles a fighter who seems to have lost his inner rhythm. After losing to Raquel Pennington in a title fight in 2024, something in her mechanism malfunctioned. The defeat from Maisie Chiasson was through a cut, painful and insulting. Then there were two verdicts against Jasmin Jasudavicius and Jacqueline Cavalcanti. And there's no hiding here — the numbers speak for themselves. In the battle with Cavalcanti, there were only 39 accurate strikes against 80 missed ones.  At the same time, her base has not gone anywhere: a brown belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, seven wins by submission — this is serious. The statistics also don't look scary anymore: ten wins with six losses.

    A veteran of the sport for over a dozen years, Julien Leblanc finally got the call to the big show. Having tried to just about every avenue to get that call, Leblanc had been close a time or two, but it ultimately hadn’t happened for him.

    “I’ve been trying to get on contenders for two, three years now – and it didn’t happen. I was actually cut from the Ultimate Fighter, the season that Robert [Valentin] was on it, and he went in final. I was like in the one of the last, I was not in the last alternate, but I was like waiting,” LeBlanc explained. “I had signed the contract waiting to know if I was flying out to Vegas to go and unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance.”

    Enoch Burke returned to jail for breaching court orders

    Enoch Burke has been returned to Mountjoy Prison after the High Court found him in breach of a court order not to trespass at Wilson's Hospital School in Co Westmeath.

    Mr Burke was arrested outside the school this morning after a High Court order was made last Friday to arrest him and bring him before the courts again.

    He appeared before Mr Justice Brian Cregan shortly after 11am to hear if he would be returned to prison less than a week since his release.

    Rosemary Mallon, barrister for Wilson's Hospital School, submitted an affidavit from school principal Noel Cunningham updating the court on events since Mr Burke's release.

    Greenland claims: How close have NATO members come to fighting each other?

    The US is considering military action to seize Greenland, in a move that could cause divisions within the NATO alliance.

    The Trump administration has once again threatened to take control of Greenland either by acquiring it or through the use of military force to “deter our adversaries in the Arctic region.”

    Greenland, which is a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, already hosts the Pituffik Space Base, which the US operates in coordination with Danish authorities. Both the US and Denmark are founding members of NATO, the most powerful military alliance.

    European and Canadian leaders have jumped to support Denmark and Greenland, saying they are working on a plan in the event the United States follows through with its threats.

    The Melbourne Stars will take an unchanged squad into the Melbourne Derby on Sunday evening, as they prepare for a clash with the Melbourne Renegades.
