Public transport in Victoria will be free until the end of May and then half-price to the end of 2026, as the state government expands its cost-of-living policy while fuel prices stay high.

Premier Jacinta Allan will on Sunday announce the major discounts to travel on all public train, tram and bus trips, in an extension of Labor’s free public transport for April.

The $400 million policy, a key part of the government’s May budget, extends free public transport until the end of next month and halves fares from June 1 until the end of the year – a month after the state election.

A comics and gaming convention in Melbourne will continue on Sunday morning, after a person was killed and another seriously injured leaving the event last night.

A car struck pedestrians outside the event at Melbourne showgrounds shortly before 5pm on Saturday, with the driver under police guard in hospital.

In a statement issued later on Saturday night, Supanova organisers said the event would continue with a minute’s silence the following morning. Organisers said:

Vic extends free public transport, defying IMF inflation warning

The Victorian Labor government is extending its free public transport offer for another month, and will then offer half price fares until the end of the year, in a $400 million election sweetener and response to war in the Middle East.

The free trains, trams and buses – both for metropolitan and regional lines – covered April at an estimated cost of $71 million in foregone revenue and will now be extended across May with half price fares promised to continue beyond the November state election until the end of the year.

The 16-month battle to reveal the truth about Sydney Water’s poo balls

After debris balls closed Sydney beaches in October 2024, Guardian Australia reported they could be linked to sewage outfalls. Authorities were less keen to talk

Last week, after torrential rain in Sydney, fresh poo balls washed up on the beach at Malabar, the closest beach to the problematic Malabar sewage treatment plant.

Signs were erected on the beach warning people not to touch the “debris balls” or swim. But authorities didn’t let the wider community know. There were no other warnings issued by Sydney Water, the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) or the state government.

Australian summers are synonymous with beaches: an unbreakable part of our national psyche, a gathering place we hold dear. A place to holiday, celebrate, rejuvenate and heal. In this summer series, we asked local identities and journalists to tell us about their favourite spot.

Scorned with the nickname “Poogee” because of its long-running stormwater woes, it was recently ranked as the Sydney swim spot most polluted with faecal matter, according to the 2024-25 NSW State of the Beaches report.

This comes a year after mysterious black balls containing traces of human faeces, methamphetamine and nasty oils washed up on its sands in October 2024.

One month on, Australia’s social media ban risks becoming symbolic

If the Albanese government intends this ban to be enforceable law, it must demonstrate a willingness to confront global technology companies when they fail to comply.

It has now been one month since Australia’s under-16 social media ban came into effect on December 10, and early signs suggest the legislation may be drifting into an uncomfortable space: morally correct in intent, but weak in execution.

In the past four weeks, many teenagers who were already active on platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat report little meaningful change. Some accounts were suspended, but many were not. Others were quickly reactivated through obvious workarounds – parental accounts, altered age settings, or alternative verification methods.
