Police escalate St Stithians teen deaths to murder investigation

Mystery deepens after St Stithians pupils’ deaths upgraded to murder case.

Mpumalanga police are investigating a murder after postmortem examinations raised new questions over the deaths of a Grade 11 pupil and a former pupil from St Stithians College, whose bodies were found at a holiday home near Sabie on Monday.

The deaths were initially treated as an inquest with reports that police were investigating whether a possible drug overdose was responsible.

Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo told IOL that the case had been upgraded to murder following the outcome of the postmortem examinations.

Masondo said the findings suggested that Cafneron Waldeck-Cooks, 17, a pupil at the elite St Stithians Girls' College, may have been strangled, while Ethan Coetzee, 19, who matriculated from St Stithians Boys' College last year, may have died by suicide.
