That is how World Cup skier Leo Ducros describes the men’s Olympic downhill course, the brooding and formidable Stelvio in the heart of the Italian Alps.

“Dark because of the shadow, its icy surface hard like Wolverine’s claws,” he explained. “It’s almost mystic. Nothing can prepare you for the Stelvio.”

Widely considered the most physically and mentally demanding piste on the men’s World Cup circuit, one ski coach compares racing on the 3,442-meter vertiginous course to rollerblading down 3,000 stairs at 62mph (100km/h) in poor light.

When does Olympic Alpine skiing start? Here's the full schedule

Alpine skiing is one of the signature sports at the Winter Olympics, and it will be no different at the 2026 Milano Cortina Games.

American stars such as Mikaela Shiffrin and Lindsey Vonn are among the headliners taking to the slopes in search of gold. They'll be competing against the world's greatest skiers, with the picturesque mountains in two different regions of Italy serving as a fitting backdrop.

Women's events at the Milano Cortina Olympics will take place at Tofane Alpine Skiing Centre in Cortina d'Ampezzo, while the men will speed down the slopes of Stelvio Ski Centre in Bormio.

Training runs for both the men and women skiers begin before the Feb. 6 opening ceremony for the Milano Cortina Games.

Mining giant BHP has overtaken the Commonwealth Bank as the most valuable company on Australia’s sharemarket, as investors pile into mining shares thanks to a rise in commodity prices, while sentiment cools towards the nation’s biggest bank.

Shares in BHP have risen sharply in the past six months as investor sentiment towards China’s economy has improved and commodities such as copper have surged, while at the same time CBA has retreated after hitting a record high in mid-2025.

During trading on Tuesday, as BHP shares rose strongly, the miner’s market value rose above that of the banking giant. BHP shares rose as much as 3.4 per cent during the session, taking its market capitalisation above $253 billion, eclipsing the market value of CBA.

The Big Australian has overtaken CBA to become the most valuable company on the ASX. But fund managers say they are watching a different metric.

After just over a year, BHP’s market capitalisation rose above Commonwealth Bank’s on Tuesday, making the iron ore giant the most valuable ASX-listed company by a margin of $1 billion.

Intense buying of the country’s largest bank had buoyed CBA’s stock for much of 2025, until an impressive rally in BHP shares brought it back to the top.

There are 11 federal holidays in 2026, and if you’re one of the lucky Americans with paid time off, a little strategy can turn those fixed dates into something more generous. You can take long weekends that actually feel long and four-day breaks that cost only one vacation day.

Every year, this brand of calendar “hacking” makes the rounds on social media, and websites like Holiday Optimizer have popped up to help travelers capitalize on the concept.

Laura Carden-Lovell, head of operations at Transfer Travel, says the trend reflects how Americans use their time off. Vacation days in the United States are uneven and often scarce, and “that constraint is reflected in how trips are planned,” Carden-Lovell said in an email.

Workers in France can take 17-day break using only eight days of leave in 2026

Workers in France benefit from five long weekends this year, and with a potential three ‘ponts’ possible taking paid holidays between weekends and holidays, 2026 is a fruitful year for holiday plans.

With three public holidays on Fridays and a further two on Mondays, workers are guaranteed these long weekends by default.

In addition, three more holidays fall on either a Tuesday or a Thursday, with one falling on a Wednesday. Note however one of these was January 1, which has already passed.

Employees can ask for time off between the weekend and the bank holiday to benefit from a four- or five-day weekend by only taking only one or two days of paid leave, known in France as ‘faire le pont’ or ‘making the bridge’.

Adam Sandler’s Most Underappreciated Comedy Deserves A Second Look

As I find myself creeping up on the wrong side of 30, I am going through the kind of millennial midlife crisis that actually makes sense in this economy. I am watching a lot of Adam Sandler movies. After Sandler’s legendary 90s run, I drifted toward other things, with Big Daddy being the last entry I paid full attention to until years later. 2000’s Little Nicky felt like the point where Sandler fatigue set in for both critics and audiences, earning roughly $58 million domestically against a reported $85 million budget, and landing an abysmal 22 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Having finally watched Little Nicky with intent rather than letting it play as background noise, I am sad to report that despite its ambition, it is not a particularly great movie. That said, I think it was done dirtier than it deserved. There are genuine laugh out loud moments scattered throughout, and while it lacks consistency, it stands as an overambitious stylistic swing that I am glad exists. Sandler took a real creative risk after absolutely owning the 90s, and that alone earns it some respect.
