Sundance Institute Names 2026 Episodic Intensive Fellows

The Sundance Institute has named the writers involved in its latest Episodic Intensive program.

Now, it has ten more fellows for its virtual program, which takes place on August 20 and 21.

They are Christin Campbell Lisa Corn, Daphne Di Cinto, Grant Fortune, Courtney Graham, Caia Lee, Alejandra Lopez, Ssuuna McKitty, Francesco Staluppi and Daud Sumolang.

This year’s creative advisors were Katherine DiSavino (Silo), Tash Gray (Snowfall), Tasha Huo (The Mighty Nein), Don Joh (Sugar), Jeff Melvoin (Killing Eve), Kira Snyder (The Handmaid’s Tale), Brandon Sonnier (Boston Blue), Tatiana Suarez-Pico (Invasion), and Marcie Ulin (The Flight Attendant).

Join me in celebrating the fourth edition of the Sundance Institute Episodic Intensive! This commemorates the end of a long Institute lab season laced with all the glories of collaborative creative breakthroughs.

Ten artists, nine projects, and for the first cycle ever, all running the gamut of one-hour dramas.

Our cohort gathers virtually August 20–21 from the tropics of Bali, the mosaic of Toronto, the Big Smoke (aka London), la dolce vita d’Italia, and spanning the U.S., heavily repping the City of Angels all the way to Washington, D.C.

And this year’s projects take us from modern metropolitan Manhattan down through small town Virginia, past the deep South, crossing the deserts of the Southwest, straight into the underbelly of downtown Los Angeles. When we leap over oceans and time, we bask in the island breezes of Puerto Rico and Indonesia before docking in Renaissance Florence.

    Watson’s message for wantaway Bomber

Essendon great Tim Watson has given his take on Jordan Ridley’s current status as a Bomber.

The injury-prone defender is believed to be pondering his future at The Hangar after a wretched run that has restricted him to just 26 games since the start of the 2024 season.

Ridley, 27, had looked at the possibility of joining either Brisbane or Gold Coast last year, which did not come to fruition, with Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary now reporting that his management is looking at Victorian clubs.

Additionally, Ridley said on the weekend that “I’m not sure at this stage” when asked if he will be in red and black next year having suffered a foot injury against Hawthorn on Saturday.

Washington: US President Donald Trump has nominated a former Republican congressman to become the next American ambassador to Australia, 15 months into his presidency.

Trump named former Virginia representative and academic David Brat for the role on Monday (US time). As per protocol, the nominee must be confirmed by the US Senate before taking up the job.

There has been no US ambassador in Canberra since Caroline Kennedy departed in late 2024, although it is not unusual for presidents to take some time to appoint ambassadors to Australia.

A conservative Republican who was part of the Tea Party movement, Brat came to prominence in 2014 when he achieved what The New York Times called “one of the most stunning primary election upsets in congressional history”, defeating the Republican leader of the House of Representatives, Eric Cantor, in the Virginia district.

Brat, who represented a Virginia district in the House of Representatives from 2014 to 2018, was named in a list of proposed appointments sent on Monday (Tuesday AEST) to the Senate for confirmation.

The White House has nominated David Brat, a former Republican member of the US House of Representatives, to be the next ambassador to Australia.

Brat represented Virginia in Congress and served two terms before he was defeated by a Democrat in 2018 in a close race. He is currently a vice-president of business relations at Virginia’s Liberty University.

The post has been vacant for a year and a half after former ambassador Caroline Kennedy left the post in November 2024.

Timberwolves' Jaden McDaniels names key to beating Nuggets in NBA Playoffs

Game 1 will be tough to forget for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Anthony Edwards and his squad kept it close against the Denver Nuggets but a third quarter collapse cost them everything. Now, they are down 0-1 in this NBA Playoffs series but Jaden McDaniels knows there is one person who is their key to winning against Nikola Jokic's squad — Rudy Gobert.

This NBA Playoffs series is dictated by the big man battle between Rudy Gobert and Nikola Jokic. The Nuggets have an offensive weapon that the league has rarely seen and the Timberwolves get a defensive menace who has the hardware to show for his prowess. Jaden McDaniels posits that their big man just needs to keep up what he was doing so that they could triumph in the first round of the NBA Playoffs.

French center Rudy Gobert delivered a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds in 37 minutes of play. Following the loss, Gobert compared his matchups with the Nuggets' Nikola Jokic to a battlefield: "It's just like going to war, it really is a mental game," Gobert started. "As a kid, I dreamed to be in this position, to be facing the best players in the world, just embracing this opportunity."

Trump names Australia in outburst over lack of ally support in Iran

US President Donald Trump has lashed out at America's allies for their lack of partipation in the Middle East conflict. (Reuters: Kevin Lamarque)

Donald Trump has issued a blistering statement lashing NATO and other allies, including Australia, for refusing to participate in the United States and Israel's war on Iran.

The outburst has come days after the American president used social media to call on allies to help reclaim the Strait of Hormuz, though the Australian government says no formal request has been made.

Iran's effective blockade of the strait has clogged up global oil supply and forced Australia and other nations to release fuel from their emergency stockpiles.

Washington: Donald Trump has reversed course and claimed he never needed or wanted other countries’ help in Iran, while lashing out at US allies – including Australia – after previously demanding their assistance.

He went as far as saying that the US should rethink its involvement in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, or NATO, while adding that he had no immediate changes in mind.

The US president’s latest broadside came as his top counter-terrorism official resigned, saying he could no longer “in good conscience” support the ongoing war in Iran, and accusing Israeli officials and lobbyists of sowing pro-war sentiment in the administration.

Movsar Evloev UFC Snub: Daniel Cormier Weighs In on Controversy

In the midst of UFC matchmaking controversies, Movsar Evloev’s perfect 9-0 record and impressive victories have failed to earn him a title shot, leaving Daniel Cormier shocked by his lack of recognition. Following Arman Tsarukyan’s UFC 324 snub, Cormier asserts that Evloev’s situation is even more precarious, highlighting the Russian contender’s absence from championship conversations despite being acknowledged by featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski as a deserving challenger. The stakes are high as UFC 325 approaches, featuring a controversial rematch that shadows Evloev’s unfulfilled potential.

In a recent discussion, Daniel Cormier expressed his astonishment regarding the UFC’s matchmaking decisions, particularly highlighting the snubbing of undefeated contender Movsar Evloev in favor of lesser-ranked fighters. Cormier can’t fathom why a fighter with Evloev’s credentials has yet to see the opportunity to compete for a title. His comments underscore a growing frustration among fans and analysts alike about the mechanics behind title shots and rankings within the UFC. Cormier’s analysis points out that the current structure seems to disregard the hard work and unbeaten records of fighters like Evloev.

Movsar Evloev has worse luck than Arman Tsarukyan, says UFC commentator

Could Movsar Evloev be in an even tougher spot than Arman Tsarukyan finds himself in?

Evloev has long been widely viewed as the rightful No. 1 contender for the UFC Featherweight Championship. That isn’t the case in the minds of UFC CEO Dana White and the promotion’s matchmakers. Evloev will have to wait his turn, as Diego Lopes is getting another fight with current 145-pound champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 325 on Saturday.

In a new video posted on his YouTube channel, UFC color commentator and Hall of Famer Daniel Cormier said that Evloev may have it worse than Tsarukyan (via MMAJunkie).
