Full circle: Narrative could not be more fitting for Melksham
It is a milestone that some may have thought may not come when Melbourne veteran Jake Melksham started this season running around in the VFL for the Casey Demons.
But Melksham’s resilience and determination have never been in question, and despite being 34 as the Demons build a new gameplan around youth and breakneck speed, it hasn’t taken him long to force his way into new coach Steven King’s team.
And after starring against Gold Coast last week with five marks, four goals and a turn-back-the-clock screamer, his career comes full circle when he plays his 250th AFL match – fittingly against his former club Essendon at Gather Round.

Fresh off a four-goal game Jake Melksham refuses to look backwards on his long career
JAKE Melksham is relishing the fresh energy around Melbourne as his exuberant young teammates continue to confound the critics under new coach Steven King.
The Demons (3-1) are firing with King at the helm and will start favourites in Melksham's 250-game milestone when they take on his former club Essendon in Gather Round.
It comes after an off-season of upheaval shifted the focus towards the next wave of players who could lift Melbourne back into premiership contention.
"For the first time in a little while the youth and energy among the younger guys is outweighing that older, more experienced player," Melksham said.

Milestone man lauds young Dees’ energy
Melbourne veteran Jake Melksham believes the Dees' young group is invigorating and infectious for the seasoned player at the club.
Speaking on Tuesday at the MCG ahead of his 250th game in Gather Round, Melksham praised the energy that new coach Steven King has brought to Melbourne which has resulted in a 3-1 start to 2026.
"It's super energetic and when I look around when I'm out on the field and at training, for the first time in a long time, I think the youth and energy is outweighing the older, more experienced players and there are a lot of guys who have been on the fringe in previous years that are really providing value to our team," Melksham said.
