'National tragedy': Experts warn of concerning NAPLAN knowledge gaps

NAPLAN test results for years 3, 5, 7 and 9 show some persistent gaps in students' literacy and numeracy proficiency. (ABC News)

Annual National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) test scores have been released after 1.2 million students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9 sat the test in March.

The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) said the results showed a slight improvement in numeracy scores in years 5, 7 and 9.

Individual students should have already received their scores, with school results to be released toward the end of the year.

One-third of Australian students are not meeting "challenging but reasonable" expectations in literacy and numeracy in what experts are warning is "stagnant" underperformance.

Reading and writing worsens in Australian schools as one in three students fail to meet Naplan benchmarks

Education minister Jason Clare says the results showed ‘real challenges’ but numeracy scores were heartening

Reading and writing scores are going backwards for almost every age group in Australia’s national standardised school tests, with one in three students still failing to meet Naplan benchmarks.

This year’s tests were taken in March by 1.2 million students across years 3, 5, 7 and 9 to measure literacy and numeracy proficiency, with results released on Wednesday by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (Acara).

Participation was down compared with last year due to industrial action in Tasmania and flooding in the Northern Territory, which has led Acara to not report Tasmanian state-level results as it lagged “far below” the body’s data standards for accurate reporting.

A third of students fail to hit NAPLAN benchmarks

One in three Australian students are failing to meet national numeracy and literacy benchmarks, but NAPLAN data shows Victorian schools are outperforming those in other states.

Nationwide NAPLAN results released on Wednesday show little or no improvement on last year, with large numbers of children still struggling with the basics of learning, despite a federal push to reshape how reading and maths are taught and tested.

The results of tests sat by more than 1.2 million children around the nation in March show nearly 30 per cent were “not achieving the learning outcomes that are expected” or “working towards expectations” in numeracy, reading, writing and spelling. More than 40 per cent of participants did not reach benchmarks in grammar.

Trump cites national security to stop offshore wind development. Here's what to know

We lost federal funding one year ago, leaving a $4 million gap. We need 500 donors to help us close it.

President Donald Trump's administration has worked to stop offshore wind development on the grounds that it's a national security risk since late last year.

It halted work on major projects, and it's buying back leases, citing national security concerns. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum says a classified report from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth proves offshore wind is a national security threat.

This comes against the backdrop of the Republican president's hatred of wind turbines and desire to boost fossil fuels for "energy dominance" in the global market. National lab estimates show that turbines installed along the U.S. coasts could provide more than enough power to cover the nation's annual electricity consumption.

California threatens lawsuit over federal offshore wind lease buyouts

NORTHSTATE, Calif. — California Attorney General Rob Bonta and the California Energy Commission are threatening legal action against the U.S. Department of the Interior over what they call an unlawful effort to halt offshore wind energy development off the state's coast.

On Thursday, July 16, Bonta and California Energy Commission Chair David Hochschild sent a Notice of Intent to Sue the Department of the Interior and energy developer Invenergy. The notice challenges a June agreement in which the federal government agreed to pay an Invenergy subsidiary more than $111 million to give up its offshore wind lease in the Morro Bay Wind Energy Area.

National Donut Day: Get free donuts at Krispy Kreme, Dunkin', more

The holiday, celebrated on the first Friday in June, was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the organization's Donut Lassies and Donut Girls, women who traveled to France to serve donuts and other snacks to soldiers during World War I.

"The story of the Donut Lassies is one of extraordinary courage," Commissioner Merle Heatwole, national commander of The Salvation Army, said in a news release. "The women who traveled to the front lines of a world war displayed compassion and bravery. On this 88th National Donut Day, we honor their remarkable legacy alongside the veterans who have served this nation, reminding ourselves to carry that same spirit of joyful service into every community we serve."

I got my hands on the 'Dunkin' Birkin' — and I'm never giving it up

On Monday, I called a few of my local Dunkin' locations to ask if they still had the free tote bags available with the purchase of a half or full dozen donuts. One location was very confused by the call, one didn't answer, and one said that yes, they had just one in stock. I raced over, and to my relief, I secured the bag.

The free tote was a limited-time promotion. Locations only got 20 bags each. It's not the first Dunkin' merchandise promotion, and certainly not even the most exciting. A branded tote bag is one of those things that you accumulate in life — not necessarily something you seek out.

Huge cuts to national disability insurance scheme aim to save more than $36bn in budget’s largest single measure

The government expects to recoup $36.2bn by curbing the national disability insurance scheme’s growth over the next four years as it looks to return to the NDIS’s “original purpose” of supporting people with “significant and permanent disability”.

The treasurer, Jim Chalmers, said the budget’s savings package amounted to genuine economic reform, beyond the “usual nips and tucks”.

Federal Health Minister Mark Butler has been invited to spend a week at the home of a regional family on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Kirsty Johnson is concerned about what recently announced changes to the NDIS might mean for the support for her two autistic boys.

Families are anxiously waiting to hear more detail about how the changes will be implemented.

A single mother of two autistic boys has a proposal for the federal health minister: spend a week with her family in regional South Australia.

Federal budget 2026: NDIS legislation takes priority over tax changes as Labor chases savings

Savings measures in Tuesday’s federal budget, including a $37.8 billion cut to the runaway cost of the NDIS, will help shave $45 billion from the cumulative deficit over the next five years, but a return to surplus is expected to be still at least a decade away.

The NDIS cut is by far the largest savings measure in the budget, contributing well over half the $63.8 billion total savings measures the government will claim by 2029-30 when it releases the budget on Tuesday night.

With a rare forecast of four clear days for the first major of the year, officials are tipped to test the world's best players with devilish pin placements and perilously fast fairways.
