Former NBL player AJ Ogilvy comes out as gay ahead of league's Pride Round

Former NBL player AJ Ogilvy has publicly revealed he is gay in a one-on-one conversation with fellow basketball trailblazer Isaac Humphries.
Ogilvy, who played for the Sydney Kings and Illawarra Hawks in a 218-game NBL career, said he felt like he had to keep parts of himself hidden to maintain a life in professional basketball.
"I've been married for nearly 18 months now. I met my husband when I was playing in Sydney, so I was with him for all my time in Wollongong and part of the time in Sydney," Ogilvy said.
Ogilvy’s pride shines through
On the eve of the fourth NBL Pride Round, 218-game veteran AJ Ogilvy has sat down for a powerful conversation with Adelaide 36ers star, Isaac Humphries, to discuss his career and life.
The former Sydney King and Illawarra Hawk opened up to Humphries, who became the NBL’s first openly gay player in 2022, and spoke about the difference in their careers.
"I was very lucky with my career, I got to travel the world and get paid to play basketball, which is such a privilege," Ogilvy said.
"But I probably didn't live my life as authentically as I probably could have during my time, especially in the NBL.

Former NBL player AJ Ogilvy has openly come out as gay in a special interview alongside Adelaide 36ers centre Isaac Humphries, reflecting on his career, personal journey, and the importance of authenticity and visibility in Australian basketball.
A three-time All-NBL First Team member who played 218 games for the Sydney Kings and Illawarra Hawks, Ogilvy described himself as “very lucky” to have enjoyed a long professional career.
