Netflix's New 114-Episode Action Thriller Series Is Officially One of the Biggest Shows on Streaming

James Melzer is a Senior Staff Writer at MovieWeb, working remotely from Pennsylvania. He covers the hottest entertainment news, as well as the latest and greatest in streaming from around the world. James has been a regular staple at MovieWeb for almost three years, writing everything from lists and features, to breaking news and movie reviews.

Before joining MovieWeb, James covered pop culture news for a variety of different media sites, including Manolith and Real TV Addict. He also hosted a successful audio podcast, where he interviewed everyone from authors and artists, to screenwriters and actors.

Less than a week after it was added to Netflix for the very first time, the streaming giant has found a new global hit by way of a 114-episode action thriller that’s taken the platform by storm. Debuting on Aug. 18, the hit series serves as a realistic military thriller that doesn't shy away from examining things like PTSD, survivor's guilt, and the effect war has on a soldier's personal life. Some think it's even better than Special Ops: Lioness, which says a lot considering how popular the Taylor Sheridan show has become in recent years.

7-Part CBS Series That Ended in 2024 Is Suddenly Dominating on Netflix

SEAL Team is gaining renewed attention on Netflix nearly two years after the CBS military drama concluded its seven-season run. The series has entered Netflix's Top 10 TV Shows in the United States, placing it among the platform's most-watched titles. Its latest performance has brought the long-running series back into the spotlight.

SEAL Team, which ended in 2024 after seven seasons, has suddenly become a hit on Netflix. The series ranked seventh among Netflix's Top 10 TV Shows in the United States on August 23, 2026, according to FlixPatrol. It ranked ahead of titles including Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes, The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare, and Best Medicine.

Netflix Adds 7-Season Military Series From Dutton Ranch And Marshals Showrunners

The Taylor Sheridan-verse has been infiltrated by a Navy SEAL team. That is, CBS's "SEAL Team" creator Benjamin Cavell and former showrunner Spencer Hudnut are now overseeing "Dutton Ranch" and "Marshals," respectively. As such, fans of the "Yellowstone" spin-offs might be tempted to check out the pair's military series, and now they can do just that via Netflix. The streamer just added all seven seasons of "SEAL Team," which follows the professional and personal lives of an elite Navy SEAL unit led by David Boreanaz's Jason Hayes.

Boreanaz picked "SEAL Team" as his "Bones" follow-up, and it served him well. The show emerged in the wake of History Channel's "Six" and around the same time as NBC's "The Brave," both of which similarly focused on military units. But Cavell's series tried to set itself apart by paying special attention to authenticity. The show hired former Navy SEAL Mark Semos and former U.S. Army special operations soldier Tyler Grey to advise, and their expertise allowed "SEAL Team" to not only accurately recreate mission protocols but the personal toll warfare takes on the individuals involved as well.

Netflix Shares Gain $6 Billion as Blood Sacrifice Launches, Yet Viewer Data Remains Absent

LOS GATOS, California, August 22, 2026, 1:10 p.m. PDT — Netflix’s market value surged by $6 billion during the debut week of Blood Sacrifice, but the company has not provided evidence of audience viewing figures.

Netflix Inc. NASDAQ:NFLX closed the week up 1.8% at $79.59, adding an estimated $6.0 billion to its equity valuation. However, shares dipped 0.8% across the two trading days after Thursday’s Blood Sacrifice premiere.

The division is significant. UK review attention could assist with exposure, though investors lack audience data so far. The Nordic crime series, spanning five episodes, needs to enter Netflix’s weekly Top 10 first.

Shares ended Friday lower than Wednesday’s $80.22 close. The bulk of the week’s rise came ahead of the worldwide launch. There is no indication that reviews had any effect on the stock.

Netflix’s New Nordic Murder Show Nabs A Solid Rotten Tomatoes Score

I am currently watching Marianne, the grisly, horrifying series from 2019 that takes place in France, and with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, is one of the highest-rated horror shows in Netflix history. It’s my second time through, but perhaps I’ll take a break for a new European murder show instead.

The new series is Blood Sacrifice, currently #3 on Netflix’s top 10 list. It’s Nordic, in this case from Sweden, where that region produces some fantastic series in this genre, particularly miniseries. Blood Sacrifice has arrived with a solid 86% Rotten Tomatoes review score, and it is worth checking out.

    Blood Sacrifice – Season 1, Episode 1 (2026) – Review

Netflix’s latest addition to the Scandinavian crime drama canon arrives with the kind of quiet dread that has become the hallmark of the genre. Blood Sacrifice (Blodsoffer) opens its five-episode run with a first episode that wastes little time establishing its grim premise and even less establishing its emotional core. Set against the peculiar, never-quite-dark nights of a Stockholm summer, the episode plunges you into a world where the perpetual light does nothing to soften the brutality on display.

The story begins with a deceptively ordinary emergency call. Two officers are dispatched to a summer house in the archipelago on reports of a home invasion. What they find, or rather, what they fail to find, sets the tone for everything that follows. The subsequent discovery of their bodies the next day is handled with a restraint that shields you from the extreme violence. There is no lingering camera fetishisation of gore; instead, the horror registers in the reactions of the witnesses and in the clinical talk at the crime scene. Detective Thomas Berg, played by Jakob Oftebro, is assigned the case. He is competent, tightly wound, and now carrying the weight of professional isolation. When the investigation begins to echo an earlier killing, he does something he clearly dreads: he reaches out to his estranged father, Alfred, a retired detective portrayed by Peter Andersson.

Christian metal band sues Netflix over KPop Demon Hunters name

25-year-old band Demon Hunter says name of streamer’s hit movie creates ‘substantial confusion’ among consumers

Christian metal band Demon Hunter is suing Netflix, accusing the entertainment giant of trademark infringement and unfair competition tied to the blockbuster “KPop Demon Hunters” name.

The lawsuit was filed on Tuesday by Hyde Lane, the company behind Demon Hunter, and alleges that Netflix Studios and concert promoter AEG Presents have created “substantial confusion” among consumers.

“Demon Hunter [is] a well-known and celebrated metal band. Demon Hunter was formed at the turn of the century and, in the quarter-century since, it has consistently released albums, toured, and sold merchandise to a large and dedicated audience,” the Tuesday filing stated, according to the Wrap.

Christian Metal Band Demon Hunter Sues Netflix Over 'KPop Demon Hunters' Trademark

Demon Hunter, a Christian metal band with roughly 25 years of releases and touring behind it, is taking on Netflix in federal court over its film KPop Demon Hunters.

The band, under the guise of their corporation Hyde Lane, filed a trademark lawsuit in the Central District of California against Netflix, Netflix Studios, and live events promoter AEG Presents on Tuesday (August 18).

According to the complaint, reviewed by Complex, Hyde Lane alleges trademark infringement, false designation of origin, and unfair competition.

At the center of the dispute is Netflix's KPop Demon Hunters, released in 2025 alongside a soundtrack album and branded merchandise. Netflix also filed numerous trademark applications for merchandise for its recently-announced live global concert tour in partnership with AEG.

Christian metal band Demon Hunter sue Netflix over KPop Demon Hunters name

Christian metal band Demon Hunter are suing Netflix in a trademark lawsuit over the streamer's hit film Kpop Demon Hunters.

The US group, who have been releasing music and touring for 25 years, said Netflix's plan for a global concert tour, along with the movie and merchandise, means there is "almost complete overlap" with their offerings.

Filed on Tuesday by the band's company Hyde Lane, the complaint claims Netflix Studios and live promoter AEG Presents have caused "substantial confusion" among consumers.

They included email evidence from someone who allegedly spent $500 on tickets for a Demon Hunter concert in New York, thinking it was a child-friendly Kpop show for their small children.

Netflix Release Date For 'Charlie Vs. Chocolate Factory', Cast Joins

The guest list at Willy Wonka’s factory is extending to Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter.

These are the latest names to join the voice cast of Netflix‘s Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, alongside previously announced stars Kit Connor as Charlie Paley and Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka.

The new film from Netflix Animation Studios will open wide globally in theaters on Nov. 5, 2027, before arriving on Netflix on Dec. 22. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle international distribution for the theatrical release.

This is a 47-day theatrical window for the movie, another high mark for the streamer, after announcing the same recently for La Bola Negra. Netflix’s Narnia movie next year will have a 49-day theatrical play. Ted Sarandos had previously committed to a six-week window should the streamer’s deal for WB go through. But it’s now mixing in those lengths on major titles despite missing out on the studio.

Netflix believes it has another tentpole on its hands with its animated take on “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” starring Taika Waititi as Willy Wonka, so much so that they’re putting the movie in theaters first before it lands on streaming.

But this is not a change in strategy! Really. Truly. It’s just the streamer’s third movie that will hit theaters in an exclusive theatrical window in the span of 12 months.

My Brilliant Career: inside Netflix’s horny, ‘bonkers’ take on an Australian classic the world is about to love

Starring Philippa Northeast and an extremely buff Christopher Chung, Miles Franklin’s 1901 novel has been adapted into a spirited series ‘unashamedly intended for women’

Within the first 10 minutes of My Brilliant Career, Netflix’s new adaptation of the classic Australian novel by Miles Franklin, there’s smutty performance poetry and a Divinyls needle drop that suggests it’s not going to be your standard turn-of-the-century period drama. By the end of the first episode – in which our teen heroine, Sybylla Melvin, pops a squat for a bush wee and flashes her knickers at a drawing room full of toffs while dancing to a Rod Stewart cover – you sense that anything could happen. And yet somehow, the alfresco fingerbang later in the series still surprises.

You haven’t seen this Australian classic quite like this before

Just a month ago, Netflix’s adaptation of Little House on the Prairie flamed the culture wars with its more inclusive take on the beloved semi-autobiographical stories by Laura Ingalls Wilder about life as a US pioneer in the 1800s.

The streamer’s take on Australian classic My Brilliant Career also introduces fresh perspectives and storylines, including Indigenous, Chinese-Australian and queer characters who certainly weren’t present in Miles Franklin’s landmark 1901 novel, or the 1979 film by Gillian Armstrong starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. The 2024 stage musical’s diverse cast added room for interpretation, though this is far more explicit.

TV Reviews: My Brilliant Career, Ricky Gervais’ Alley Cats, Two Weeks In August & MasterChef finale

It’s always a tricky proposition, bringing a beloved novel to the small screen. There will always be viewers who take umbrage with the way their favourite book has been adapted. The characters may not look the way they should, key elements may have been left out: the hero or heroine might appear too modern, have too much hair; be not quite pretty enough — there’s always something.

With all this in mind, it will be interesting to see what audiences make of this adaptation of Miles Franklin’s beloved novel of the same name from 1901.

The text has long been studied in classrooms, but most will probably remember it from Gillian Armstrong’s much-loved 1979 film, which starred Judy Davis and a very smouldering Sam Neill.

Netflix August 2026: Full List of New Arrivals

The Netflix August 2026 list of new arrivals features some heavy hitters for the streaming service. For starters, Outer Banks returns for its fifth and final season on August 20. The treasure-hunting adventures of the lovable North Carolina teenagers known as “The Pogues” and their rivalry with the affluent “Kooks” will finally come to an end. Outer Banks has been a steady success across the years, with the Netflix show helping launch the careers of stars Madelyn Cline (Glass Onion, I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Drew Starkey (Queer, Onslaught). Safe to say, this Netflix original series will be dearly missed.

New on Netflix, Prime Video, HBO Max and More in August 2026 — Full List of Movies and Shows

August is typically perceived as a dumping ground for mid-level movies that can’t compete with blockbusters like Spider-Man: Brand New Day or Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey.

That doesn’t hold true for streaming services, though. On the contrary, Netflix, HBO Max, Prime Video and other platforms are about to add some of their highest-profile content of 2026.

On Netflix, fan-favorite shows like My Life with the Walter Boys, Outer Banks, Leanne and Tires are returning for brand-new seasons.

Hulu is dropping Ryan Murphy‘s controversial new show, The Shards, while HBO Max is adding to Warner Bros.’ DC Universe by debuting the sci-fi mystery series, Lanterns, with Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre.

Ranked: Netflix’s 20 Official Most-Watched Series Of Recent Years

Netflix took a major transparency step in December 2023, when it went further than any competitor by releasing an extensive list of its most-watched films and shows.

At the time, Netflix said that this would give creators and investors “deeper insights into our audiences,” allowing the industry to pore over its viewing data every six months.

Netflix revealed during the week that it will stop publishing its biannual What We Watched reports, replacing them with yearly insights. The streamer’s report for the first half of 2026 will be its last six-month update.

So, to mark the final biannual What We Watched report, Deadline has collated four years’ worth of viewing figures to bring you an official ranking of the most-watched shows on Netflix in the data dump era.

Netflix’s ‘Little House On The Prairie’ Rotten Tomatoes Review Score Is In

Netflix is going back 50 years for its newest project, a reboot of Little House on the Prairie, last seen on TV in 1974. That series itself was based on the Laura Ingalls Wilder book series published in 1935. So yes, we are approaching a 100-year-old story.

Little House on the Prairie has debuted on Netflix at #2, behind only the ever-present Worst Neighbor Ever true crime anthology. That’s higher than the well-performing I Will Find You, the latest season of Sullivan’s Crossing and the 100% scored Dark Winds.

Little House on the Prairie has its own Rotten Tomatoes score in, and it currently sits at a good, perhaps not incredible 77% among critics with a few dozen reviews in so far. The audience score is a lower 61%, but there are only a tiny number of reviews in there, and few have likely watched it all the way through yet.

Little House on the Prairie review – this reboot will have you sobbing for a simpler world by episode four

Like tradwifery for children, this revamp of the 19th-century settlers show is a precision-tooled and well-oiled machine. It’s a cosy world full of faith, hope and the American way

I never actually watched an episode of Little House on the Prairie, though it bestrode my late 70s-early 80s’ childhood like a ginghamed colossus. This is for the simple reason that Michael Landon’s bouffant hair frightened me. Bouffant hair is such a bad thing. But so great is the power of both the cultural cringe and osmosis that even the most militant Britisher of a certain age has absorbed to some degree the story of the pioneering Ingalls family and its on-screen aesthetic. For the younger folk – it’s tradwifery for children.

Netflix’s Best New Movie Grabs A 91% Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score

Netflix has a new #1 movie in its top 10 list, a romantic comedy that seems to have pleased both critics and audiences alike, far from a sure thing in that genre.

The film is Voicemails for Isabelle, which I thought was going to be based on a book from 2010 or so when people still left voicemails, but that’s not the case. Rather, Voicemails for Isabelle is written and directed by Leah McKendrick as an entirely original production. With so many adaptations of romantic novels hitting the screens, this is certainly unusual. And apparently welcome.

Voicemails for Isabelle stars Not Okay’s Zoey Deutch and Love, Simon’s Nick Robinson (McKendrick, also an actress, has a role as well). Deutch’s Jill leaves voicemails for her dead sister as a way of coping with the loss, but when the number is reassigned, connects with Robinson’s Austin who begins receiving the messages instead. Romance follows, naturally.

Voicemails for Isabelle review – Netflix romcom picks creepy over cute | Romance films

Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson stumble in this mushy, overlong story of a woman leaving voicemails for her dead sister

There’s a fine line between romantic comedy and creepy thriller, and while redefining the genre’s lovelorn leads as often incredibly oddball stalkers is nothing new (see the Sleepless in Seattle trailer recut as a horror movie 20 years ago), an online deluge of memes and thinkpieces have elevated post-movie bar jokes to commonly accepted theory. Some film-makers have slowly tried to catch up and capitalise – last year’s dark comedy I Love You Forever showed how epic acts of romance can be rooted in manipulation while a great deal of what makes current box office record-breaker Obsession so effective is its horror movie perversion of the day-to-day realities of all-consuming true love.

Is Voicemails For Isabelle A True Story? Writer Reveals Real Events Behind Netflix Rom-Com

If you’ve just finished Voicemails for Isabelle and are wondering who hurt writer and director, Leah McKendrick, enough to come up with that premise… the answer is: life, mostly.

The Netflix rom-com follows Jill (Zoey Deutch), a novice baker in San Francisco who shares a tight, long-distance bond with her younger sister Isabelle, who lives in Austin and later dies after a battle with cystic fibrosis.

To cope, Jill keeps calling Isabelle’s old number and leaving long, emotional voicemails about her day, her grief and the general chaos of staying afloat — not realising the number has been reassigned to Wes (Nick Robinson), a realtor who ends up falling for the girl on the other end of the line.
