Premier Ben Carroll will cut the number of ministers in his cabinet in what he says is a simple demonstration of his commitment to prioritising Victorian taxpayers’ money.

Following the resignations of Jacinta Allan and her Left faction loyalists Lily D’Ambrosio and Harriet Shing last week, Mordialloc MP Tim Richardson was on Monday promoted to cabinet, bringing the number of positions from 22 to 20. The remaining two cabinet positions will remain unfilled until after the state election.

The move also ensures Labor’s dominant Left faction, which split over last Tuesday’s leadership change, does not descend into further infighting over who should fill the two vacant positions.

Victorian Premier Ben Carroll has named his new frontbench after taking the Labor leadership from Jacinta Allan last week.

His ministry includes a new portfolio of Minister for Artificial Intelligence, which will be filled by former police minister Anthony Carbines.

There's no longer a Minister for Transport Infrastructure and the Suburban Rail Loop.

New Victorian premier Ben Carroll has announced the make-up of his cabinet, including a new ministry dedicated to ethical and responsible artificial intelligence development.

Jaclyn Symes, an ally of former premier Jacinta Allan, has lost the treasury to Colin Brooks, who will also take on industrial relations.

First, like many fans have theorized for months, Sadie Sink is playing X-Men member Jean Grey in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” She’s the primary antagonist in the movie, though it’s later revealed that the Department of Damage Control kidnapped and killed her older sister Sara. Once he realizes the cause of Jean’s Damage Control crusade, Spider-Man convinces her to release the psychic bubble she creates that freezes nearly every New Yorker at the end of the movie. He also saves her from getting shot by Jon Bernthal’s Punisher and gets hit by the sniper rifle bullet himself. At the end of the movie, Spidey recuperates, and Jean heads out of town (and possibly to Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters upstate).

Peter Parker is now an adult living completely alone after asking Doctor Strange to erase all memory of his identity from the world to save the multiverse. Australians bought more electric vehicles in the first six months of 2026 than the whole of the previous year, new data shows, as the ongoing crisis in the Middle East causes uncertainty about petrol prices.

There were 103,855 battery electric vehicles (EVs) sold nationally between January and June, compared with 103,269 in 2025, according to data from VFacts and the Electric Vehicle Council.

Battery EVs as a share of new car sales doubled compared with the same time last year, making up 23.4% of sales in June 2026 compared with 10.3% in June 2025.

Soaring EV sales to shield Australia from fuel shortages

Soaring electric vehicle uptake is materially reducing Australia’s petrol demand, as experts forecast the ongoing global oil crisis could put enough clean cars on the road to leave the country less exposed to future fuel shortages.

Fuel prices hit record highs in March due to Iran shutting off oil exports via the key shipping channel in the Strait of Hormuz, in response to the United States’ missile attack.

EV sales soared in response. There are now about half a million battery-only electric vehicles on the road, which, based on average driving patterns and fuel consumption, are estimated to avoid around 600 million litres of petrol use each year.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese says his government is not planning to extend the fuel excise discount but has foreshadowed there will be further announcements on fuel in the coming days.

The 32 cents a litre fuel excise discount expired 30 June but was extended by another month at 16 cents a litre.

That discount is set to expire 2 August, at which point Australian drivers will no longer be shielded from price increases at the bowser.

Petrol and diesel prices have risen sharply in the past week. In Melbourne, unleaded rose six per cent to $1.80 per litre, while diesel rose 12 per cent to $2.17.

The federal government is moving to reassure motorists about Australia's fuel supply as the conflict between the United States and Iran re-escalates once again.

Oil prices tipped over $US100 ($143) a barrel this week for the first time since May, with the national average unleaded 91 price at $1.88 per litre on Saturday and diesel at $2.30.

The fuel excise discount is due to expire on August 2, having been halved this month to 16 cents per litre.

The federal government is moving to reassure motorists about Australia's fuel supply as petrol prices rise amid renewed clashes in the five-month-old war in the Middle East.

A powerful parliamentary committee has publicly released a whistleblower’s emails that first raised allegations of misconduct in KPMG Australia’s audit division.

An 18-page document with the nine emails was uploaded to the corporations and financial services committee web pages on the day KPMG announced long-term partner John Sams would be its new chief executive officer.

Sams replaces Andrew Yates after the former CEO, former head of audit Julian McPherson, and other senior partners either left or stood down from positions after the ethical scandal became public on March 24.

KPMG whistleblower refused to move to Australia, fearing alleged bullying

The whistleblower who triggered the scandal engulfing consulting giant KPMG Australia refused to move to Australia in part because he claimed he had been bullied by one of KPMG’s most senior executives.

Documents released by a parliamentary committee this week show the whistleblower, who has not been identified, had been hired by KPMG outside Australia and had initially been open to moving back as the firm requested under its policies.

In July 2023, the freshly released emails show, the man said that he would not move back to Australia from an unknown country in part because of what he said was “bullying and defamation” by Kim Lawry, a top audit partner and board member at KPMG.
