David Pocock says the Socceroos represent what’s so great about Australia – multiculturalism.

The popular independent senator from Canberra spoke to Guardian Australia at half-time in the city’s main square as the Socceroos took on Paraguay at the world cup. Australia will go through to the round of 32 teams after the match ended in a draw.

The country’s diversity has been a hot topic this week after One Nation leader, Pauline Hanson, shared her vision for Australia to become a monoculture. The senator later clarified that she saw the Socceroos as an example of monoculture – one team united under one flag.

Can you take last-minute sick leave or time off to watch the Socceroos? Here’s what the law says

On Friday at midday AEST, the Socceroos will take on Paraguay in their final group stage match at the World Cup.

With a win or draw, Australia would qualify for the knockout stages of the tournament for only the third time in history.

Should they lose, the Socceroos could still sneak through to the next stage, but it will become much harder, coming down to points and the results of other matches.

Die-hard fans probably already booked leave from work to watch this game weeks ago. But for the majority of Australians now tuning in, they won’t have planned so far ahead.

Scotland international Che Adams tempted by Wolves despite €5m Venezia offer

News outlets in Italy claim that Scotland International Che Adams is tempted by the idea of a return to the UK with Wolverhampton Wanderers, despite a reported offer from newly-promoted Venezia in Serie A.

According to reports from tuttomercatoweb, Adams is keen to return to the UK after spending the last two seasons in Serie A with Torino.

The Italian outlet claims that Adams is of interest to at least two clubs, including 2025-26 Serie B champions Venezia and English side Wolves, who will be playing in the EFL Championship next season following their relegation from the Premier League.

TMW claims that given Adams’s desire to return to the UK, Wolves could be an enticing option for him. Friday’s report claims that Venezia are ‘not willing to throw in the towel’ yet, though.

As Hamish McLachlan says, closing out the service, Daniher “changed the way many of us look at the world and the cards we’ve been dealt” with “his hope, his humour, his heart”.

“He never asked us to feel sorry for him. He just asked us to fight alongside of him. And the country picked up a beanie and answered collectively. We are a better community because of you.

Australia news LIVE: Tax bill to progress to Senate after passing lower house; Hezbollah rejects ceasefire, darkening prospects of ending Iran war

Hello and welcome to our national news live blog for Friday, June 5. My name is Emily Kaine, and I’ll be helming our coverage for the first part of the day. Here’s what is making news.

Deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume has accused the government of being “sneaky” in its passage of tax legislation, and left the door open for a deal with the Greens to extend inquiries into budget legislation.

“Two days [of inquiry] is nothing like enough, apparently. These are generational reforms. If they’re generational reforms, well, surely they should have been taken to an election, so that the Australian people could decide that’s when you get the appropriate scrutiny. But they haven’t been,” Hume told ABC radio this morning.

Capital gains will still receive tax breaks compared to wages: Treasury

The Treasury brains trust behind the government’s controversial tax overhaul says capital gains will still get a tax break compared to wages, even after the elimination of the 50 per cent discount.

Treasury tax officials also said the plan to include all assets in the new capital gains tax regime, including property, listed shares, crypto and stakes in private businesses, was intended to avoid investment distortions between different assets and stop “tax minimisation” opportunities.

Barcelona plot shock transfer swoop for Piero Hincapie despite Arsenal holding £45 million purchase option on Bayer Leverkusen loanee

Barcelona are targeting Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie as Hansi Flick searches for a left-footed centre-back. However, Arsenal remain in pole position after securing a £45 million purchase option in the Ecuador international’s loan agreement.

The Catalans are continuing to reshape their squad ahead of the summer transfer window, with Flick keen to strengthen his defence. After securing a deal for Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon, the Catalan side are also prioritising Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez.

According to the Daily Mail, Hincapie has now emerged as a leading target. Barcelona have reportedly cooled their interest in Inter centre-back Alessandro Bastoni and see the Ecuador international as a more attainable option. Hincapie’s ability to operate as a left-sided centre-back and his composure in possession fit Flick’s tactical demands. The 24-year-old is viewed as an ideal profile as Barcelona look to modernise their backline under the German coach.

Barcelona weigh up move for Arsenal defender, City defender linked with move away – transfer round up

Barcelona are weighing up a possible move for Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie this summer.

The Mail reports that the Spanish giants recognise that a deal for the 24-year-old will be difficult to pull off, as they look to add to their summer business, having already agreed a deal for Newcastle’s Anthony Gordon.

Arsenal signed Hincapie last summer from Bayer Leverkusen on loan with an option to buy for £45million and a 10 percent sell-on clause. Should they trigger the option, a five year contract is pre-agreed.

Liverpool are pushing for a quick agreement with RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, with the 19-year-old one of their top summer targets, according to Florian Plettenberg.

Mikel Arteta has named his side for this evening’s Champions League final against Paris Saint-Germain, with Kai Havertz given the nod to start up front.

The boss has made eight switches from his heavily-rotated starting XI that began our 2-1 win at Crystal Palace six days ago, with only Cristhian Mosquera, Piero Hincapie and Myles Lewis-Skelly keeping their places.

The two defenders started at centre-back at Selhurst Park but will revert to the full-back positions, with Gabriel and William Saliba returning to the heart of our defence, with David Raya behind them.

Kai Havertz: ‘Just to watch the Champions League final is very special, to play in it is unreal’

Arsenal striker scored the winner in the final five years ago and is determined to make up for being ‘in a bad place’ when injured this season

When Kai Havertz thinks back to the 2021 Champions League final, he can’t help smiling. Chelsea’s surprise victory over Manchester City in Porto still feels like yesterday for the Germany striker.

“It is something I will never forget,” he says. “As a kid I could have never dreamed I would score a goal in the final and win that game. I will always be proud of it. I just try to take that feeling and hopefully it will happen again.”

Jurrien Timber returns to first team training ahead of UCL final

He may have done it in Chelsea blue, but Kai Havertz knows what it takes to win the Champions League, having scored the only goal of the 2021 final against Manchester City.

Just as Thomas Tuchel’s side were that day, Arsenal head into Saturday’s showdown with reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain as underdogs. The German, however, has no doubt the Gunners can get the job done.

It has not been an easy 18 months for Havertz. He missed much of last season’s run-in, including the two-legged semi-final defeat to the Parisians, and also sat out the first half of the current campaign. There were dark moments as he wrestled with his fitness, but the surgeries to repair hamstring and knee issues are now firmly behind him.

‘News to me’: Piastri responds to Red Bull rumours

Rumours around Piastri’s future emerged in recent weeks amid uncertainty surrounding Max Verstappen’s long-term future at Red Bull.

Autosport reported that the Australian had become Red Bull’s leading target should the Dutchman depart the team for 2027.

Piastri remains on a long-term deal at McLaren after signing an extension ahead of the 2025 season, with the 25-year-old continuing to form one of the strongest pairings alongside reigning world champion Lando Norris.

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, Piastri denied there had been any discussions with Red Bull.

“There’s obviously not been any discussions or anything, but it’s flattering, and there’s not really much more than that.
